Question about AMD Graphic drivers for gaming
thimoty44 Apr 23, 2022
Hi linux gamers ! I am here for a question about AMD Graphic drivers. I installed drivers via PPA kisak-mesa for my AMD RX 5700 XT but my question is the following for gaming and performance should I install official graphics drivers for amd (on amd website) ? Or I should keep the PPA and if I should install the official do I keep the PPA or I purge it ? My config is the following :
Graphic card : AMD RX 5700XT
Processor : AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (8 cores 3,7 GhZ)
RAM : 1 Stick of 16GB hyperX Fury
OS : Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS
Kernel : 5.17.0-3.1-liquorix-amd64 (Custom os for gaming)

I hope advanced gaming linux user will give me advice for this. I just begin my journey to linux gaming I am already playing league of legends with linux gaming and right now I am trying to make work the game DayZ on moded servers. Have a nice day gamers !

Just to add a little more context for you, the Kisak Mesa drivers you have installed is the best option for you. Mesa open source drivers provide superior performance & compatibility for gaming compared to the official proprietary drivers provided by AMD. Kisak repo in particular will provide you with cutting edge Mesa updates compared to the mainstream Ubuntu repos.

Services such as Feral’s Gamemode may be able to provide you more stable gaming or a few extra fps if you’re looking to optimise your setup further?

Best of luck on your Linux gaming journey 👍🏻
