Unity leadership from current CEO, John Riccitiello at odds with Open Source
Craggles086 Jul 18, 2022
Think Unity has had some constructive input into the Linux community in the past.

But if the CEO of Unity has this attitude when talking to developers, then not looking good for Unity’s relations with the Open Source community.

That's business speak i guess.
More than half the gaming market is mobile.
It's cheaper to make games for mobile and microtransactions are probably more profitable than a flat rate.
I think in some countries the lootboxes we despise so much in the west are considered par for the course.

Quotehe sees a growing divide between game developers who “massively embrace how to figure out what makes a successful product”

Even though we're all using the same words, we're not using the same language.

What makes a successful product, according to him (and the rest of industry interests): a game which maximally extracts as much money as possible from as many suckers as possible.

What makes a successful product, according to gamers: game was fun.

It's almost as if you can apply that template to society and see where things are going wrong.

I have zero issues not buying any games that use Unity from here on out. I had little love for the engine as it was. Hopefully more developers use options like Godot; Panda3D; Ogre; or Castle Game Engine all of which are FOSS options. Even UE4 which is source available would be a better option.

Arguing for more pay to play because the market is so crowded with pay to play.

Might be a reason people have to do more, not to be drowned in all the bad apps / games.
(yawn)

“I’ve seen great games fail because they tuned their compulsion loop to two minutes when it should have been an hour,”

“Riccitiello is right, on some level. Mobile gaming is so saturated that every part of the development process needs to be on point to set yourself apart from the horde and, in rare cases, make enough money for the next project. But his comments also speak to the emptiness of the mainstream mobile market. It’s become so creatively bankrupt that someone focusing on artistry over hooking whales with an addictive gameplay loop is seen as worthy of condescension rather than admiration.”

So he just said sorry.

https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/18/23269218/unity-ceo-john-riccitiello-apology-game-developers-fucking-idiots-ironsource-merger

This gives some hope that this is just a John Riccitiello thing and does not reflect Unity as a community.

So, he makes a statement calling people idiots that causes damage to his reputation, his company and sparks community outrage for which he now has to apologise for?

Perhaps when making that statement he was simply referring to himself?

It certainly seems he is

Anything that gets your name out is good marketing. Certainly for someone with that mindset.
