I'm trying to determine if this is a fluke or if others are experiencing the same thing.
I've noticed that games whose first time setup script attempts to install DirectX under Proton 8 causes DXSETUP.exe to hang, essentially freezing the installation process until DXSETUP.exe is killed. Not sure if the runtime actually gets installed properly at that point. 0_0
Anyone else having this issue?
It has to be a CLEAN install of the game, i.e. no files under compatdata, using Proton 8.0

I grep'ed through the manifests and found one title that referenced DXSETUP, WRC 7. Recreating the prefix for that game and running it worked fine in Proton 8, but I also did not see any message about installing DirectX so I'm not sure if it was a good test case.

If it's older directx it could be in a subdir in the game directory (in steamapps/common). With an older game, that's likely the case.
If it's coming from Steam's common runtimes it'll be in steamapps/common/Steamworks Shared/_CommonRedist
Chances are you probably don't actually need to install DirectX runtimes. If you're missing something you can also add it with winetricks (or protontricks wrapper).
Your game might be just fine right now as is.
