Getting started with Minecraft mods, and best practice/recommendations?

Hi everyone, does anyone have any pointers for getting started with mods for Minecraft Java edition, and doing it securely, please? I'm particularly wary after the news last year about CurseForge having a malware problem. I'm also currently using only completely vanilla Minecraft, so I don't even know where to start, with Prism/Modrinth/CurseForge/Fabric/etc.!

For example, should I use the Prism Launcher, or the Modrinth launcher/app, or something else? Is using a different launcher from the standard one even required/recommended? I read that with the malware problem from last year, if you were using the Prism flatpak it meant the malware didn't work, so is that generally to be recommended?

I'm very happy to RTFM, but if someone can point me in the right direction so I'm at least reading the right stuff I'd be very grateful — for example, if there are things that are generally considered sound recommendations or best practice (or dodgy stuff to stay away from). Thank you in advance!

The Prism Launcher flatpak is probably the best way to play minecraft on linux. Development is active and features are plenty. The official launcher works, but it makes installing mods, resource packs and shaders very cumbersome. Mods like sodium, iris and starlight are a must have, as they improve performance and allow for visual improvements through shaders.
The "Fabulously Optimized" mod pack is a good starting point. You might want to add the WayGL mod as well if you run a wayland session.
