The developer of RUINER [Steam, Official Site] recently had a chat with Gamasutra where they gave some more details about the Linux & Mac version, it didn't sound too good.

You can see the video here, where if you skip to 18:30 they said this (my write-up after listening):

To be honest we are not really sure about the Mac version at this point […] There is some technical problem, we really cannot talk about it at the moment. This was the reason why the Linux and Mac version were postponed. We didn't plan it at all, but at the very end of production there was a problem that came up. The idea is to a release a Linux version first and a Mac version after that. We don't have a date for it.

I found what they said to be quite odd. I'm not sure if they were saying they didn't plan for Linux and Mac at all, despite saying they were platforms in the initial announcement, or if they were saying they weren't planning for the delay. I'm leaning more towards the meaning being that they really didn't plan for them at all. That would make more sense, since their Twitter team told me they had no plans and they ended up asking for "+1's" on the Steam forum.

Not looking good, but they do seem to be trying now.

Thanks for the tip micha.

Sounds to me like you're reading too much into it. I can't get more meaning out of it than that they didn't plan on getting a last minute technical problem.

Well, if you had plans for something, why would the Twitter team say otherwise and why would they require +1's on the Steam forum for interest in it?

They could mean it the other way as I also mentioned, I'm just covering both possibilities.

I'm with Ehvis on this one, seems like they didn't plan to drop the mac and linux versions until they encountered this technical problem, at least that's my interpretation of it.

Sure, as said it could be either way :) everyone will think about it differently. They could have been clearer about it.

The main thing is if it comes out or not.

I sure hope it does, I do plan on buying it.

As for weird communication. I work at a company of only a handful of people and we still manage to not know what the other is up to. Most people are terrible at communication.

An the technical problems. It's a UE4 game. If they wait too long with checking their other platforms, they run into trouble.

To be fair my reading of the developers quote, specifically "This was the reason why the Linux and Mac version were postponed. We didn't plan it at all, but at the very end of production there was a problem that came up" reads they had no plan to delay he Linuc/Mac launch but a problem came up at the end of production that resulted in it, and not as you have interpreted that there was no plan for a linux version at all.

As for the request for +1's, it may just have been after encoutering the problem they wanted to guage the demand for a linux port before embarking on a project to find and solve the problem, if demand was too low this could be grounds to shelve the version, whereas if demand is still high then its worth investing the resources.

This builds up to be one of the big soap operas for this year :)

I don't understand. He only said that there are problems with the Mac version, not Linux.

And at the end, i understand that he has no date for the Mac version...

The question was about Mac, but he directly included Linux into it.

They should conference with Rockfish Games, as they were able to solve the technical issues with Unreal Engine 4 and Everspace on Linux ;)
Maybe they have similar issues.
Shmerl 3 Oct 2017
I think they mean they didn't expect that problem. And I'm glad they'll focus on Linux first, before macOS. "Not talking about it" isn't smart though, since they won't get any help from the community. They need to learn from Everspace.

My guess would be issues with OpenGL/Shaders.
Anyway, I'm with Shmerl here, they should reach out to the community and/or fellow developers. The knowledge to make ports work is there.

The latest from the steam forums reads thus: :(

Ruiner_Dispatcher

Hi guys,

Linux port is currently on hold. We have so much work around the current versions that we have to prioritize our efforts. We will think about it after the hottest period is over ;)

Take care,
RUINERS
