For those that don't remember, the folks that make the Solus distribution are working on improving Steam on Linux. They're doing so using their Linux Steam Integration project as a Snap package. They've now shown off some of the early efforts.

Firstly, as a reminder on what Linux Steam Integration actually is:

Linux Steam Integration is a helper system to make the Steam Client and Steam games run better on Linux. In a nutshell, LSI automatically applies various workarounds to get games working, and fixes long standing bugs in both games and the client.

Here's the video the Solus developer, Ikey Doherty, shared with us on Twitter:

It seems other games are working well too like Civilization VI, Game Dev Tycoon and Hearts of Iron IV. Those have been tested by Joshua Strobl, the Volunteer Communications Manager for Solus.

The use of Snaps, means it should in future work on practically any Linux distribution, which is awesome.

Great work. Sure wouldn't mind giving this a try on my Ubuntu 17.10 machine when it's ready.

There is a petition floating about in web to officially call Ikey Doherty a "Linux Badass" everytime he's referenced.

Boy has he done some service for Linux in general already!

great stuff :), thanks Ikey and all those who have worked on this. the ARK fixes are probably one of the biggest aspects of it. i'm not sure if the shader issues for nvidia were part of the fix or not. I don't have it installed anymore to test. but I most likely will in the near future.

Off topic but I was wondering how is the state of optimus on Solus right now? Last time i tried i could not get it to work with nvidia card. Also is there a plan for a KDE spin by any chance?

Sorry for Offtopic reply.

Optimus do work on Solus. However if you have latest and greatest Pascal setup then it needs some extra tricks... "nomodeset" on kernel line for install and first boot. After you have updated Solus to latest and installed Proprietary Nvidia drivers then stuff is smooth as baby bottom.

However. If you looking Bumblebee kind of dynamic switching or Windows like dynamic Optimus behavior then you will disappoint, that is not yet in place. Also "Screen Tearing" is there as Solus has Xorg 18.4 still... PrimeSync needs at least Xorg 1.19.x to work.

Good news is that Linux Badass Ikey has now Optimus Pascal laptop for himself and the amount of swear words in IRC we hear I suppose that he loves Optimus and it will be properly fixed in no time. Perhaps we soon even enjoy some dynamic switching... I personally bit doubt of that. :)

What comes to Steam I think Solus is on same level with Ubuntu on supported games without extra fixing... some cases even better. So for Gaming I would pick Solus as number one Distro!
Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye on this. Unfortunately screen tearing is a deal breaker for me, however when that is fixed i'll definitely give Solus a try.

Hello @ikey,
I was wondering why Snap and not Flatpak? I don't know much about the technicalities behind these solutions, I've just heard that Flatpak is more secure, but maybe it's too secure to make a proprietary software like Steam working flawlessly.

Noooo, he declined the elusive Linux Steam survey!

Apparently, he clicked "next" and killed it to have another prompt ([source](https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/7c1ii0/the_work_from_the_solus_developers_to_get_their/dpmiv05/)). ;)

I would pick Solus as number one distro for everything. And I did 1.5 years ago, never looked back!
