Assassin's Creed Valhalla is impressive on Steam Deck

Assassin's Creed Valhalla has launched on Steam and that means getting it on Steam Deck and Linux desktop is much easier, since Valve have Proton. The experience on Steam Deck is surprisingly good too.

That's right, Ubisoft are back on Steam as they previously announced. This is the first of multiple others coming to Steam including Anno 1800 and Roller Champions. Annoyingly, it does use their own launcher like EA games. However, it seems to be a lot less problematic than the EA App with login, 2FA and Steam Account Linking all working just fine out of the box.

In the below video (using SteamOS 3.4 Preview) you'll see a 4-way benchmark, and then gameplay and then a final section showing what the battery life will be like out of the box (spoiler: not great). You're likely going to want to do some power limiting from the Steam Deck performance menu for this one, and getting a solid 30FPS even bringing down the power seems like it will be quite easily achievable in this one. Seems like Ubisoft did a surprisingly good job at optimizing the game overall considering how well it can run on Steam Deck.

You can buy it on Steam and it's 67% off until December 22nd which seems like a really great deal. Looks like another game I'll be playing through, once I finish Death Stranding Director's Cut (after the Deck rebooting bug gets fixed…).

Nice to see that they launch with a discount. I saw it on sale on the Ubistore, but since they were about to launch on Steam, I waited for that. Less hassle, less launchers that can break. If I only had more time for all these games... :(

Personnally, I run all my games at 30fps, unless the experience is bad (which I didn't witness, yet). It saves the battery and many of them have stuttering issues above that (Playstation titles, I'm looking at you). These "console games" have been designed for the PS4 or Xbox One at 30fps, and it shows. In some cases, I even found forum posts of guys that had these issues on Windows with RTX 3080 gpus, so... Not a Steam Deck hardware limitation.

A friend of mine tried Bioshock Infinite through Proton at 30fps, on my Steam Deck and found the experience pretty smooth and enjoyable. He's got a 2000$ computer with a 144hz monitor (not saying that he didn't see a difference, just saying that it's not a "deal breaker" for single player games).

Assassin's Creed Odyssey actually runs smoother on the Steam Deck than it does on my 3080 under Proton. But then again I am trying to run it at 3840x1200, max settings. This runs fine under Windows though. Irritating to have to boot into Windows...

Is the game worth it?
I heard so much about a lot of boring and repetitive tasks in an impressive and nice open world.
But the most important thing to me is an interesting story and characters. And I have not so much trust in Ubisoft.

I haven't played Valhalla yet, but the others have had pretty decent story lines. Granted after the original writer left the team, they definitely have a more generic feel, like 'okay, one more person in the ancient world that has some sort of revenge story against some bad group.

Who has the best price on that? I want to buy a few...

I'd love to play this, but I don't think I'm willing to give money to Denuvo, nor have it on my system.

Hopefully they'll remove it at some point, like some other games have done.

I´m having a problem with the controls not working in AC Valhalla whenever the Deck wakes up from sleep. Since the game always takes ages to start/restart, this really kills a lot of enjoyment for me. Anybody else having similar problems? Using Proton 7.0.5 right now, but I´m gonna try out some other versions later today.

No problems here on SteamOS 3.4 which has some fixes for sleep.

@Liam: I´m on the stable channel, so OS 3.32 for me. Maybe I´ll try out preview, but knowing Valve it will probaply come to stable by tomorrow or so xD Thanks for the feedback!

If you already own this game.. The Ubisoft Connect version also works great at 40fps!
Just install the ubisoft connect launcher as a 'non steam game' then navigate compat folder to find what you just installed, then add the launcher from the folder as a 'non steam game' and away you go.

Im having a problem. Im using the 3.4 version and i even installed proton next. The issue is that i cant choose proton next in the compatibility menu of AC Valhalla. Doesnt matter what proton version i use. I open Valhalla and it just keeps loading and loading and loading with the Steam symbol. What can i do to run AC Valhalla on Steam Deck? And im using the Steam version of AC Valhalla.
