Devolver Digital has now acquired System Era Softworks, who made the popular space exploration and industry game ASTRONEER. The deal is for "up to" $40 million USD done through a mixture of cash and shares, with $22 million USD due as initial consideration.

Makes sense since Devolver initially missed a publishing deal for it, as explained by System Era in an announcement post and since then ASTRONEER has gone on to generate over $87 million USD of gross revenue and has been played by over 13 million people!

System Era will be a first-party Devolver studio now, keeping their brand and team together, and System Era say they have plenty of plans to keep expanding ASTRONEER during 2024.

In an era of many companies being swallowed up, and game industry consolidation, at least Devolver Digital seems like one of the more reasonable publishers to join with.

I never did pick up Astroneer. I think this was one of those slightly bizarre scenarios where, years ago, they said they were "considering" Linux support, but it never happened, so I never bought it. Sad to see yet another acquisition, but as the article notes, at least it's not the likes of <shiver> Microsoft, Embracer or Epic.

This is very good news, there has not been good content for the game for a long time, I hope their merger will contribute to development.
If they added native linux support, it would be even better.

I have Astroneer, and I find the reward-after-exploring game loop not fun enough, even when playing with friends. About two sessions was enough for me to decide, nah, I don't want to play this anymore. Worth trying it out on a bargain. It's a cute style though.
