While Beamdog have moved on from Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, they're at least not letting it just sit still as they're allowing the community to further improve it.

Originally released in 2002, Beamdog did the Enhanced Edition back in 2018 bringing with it better support for modern platforms, advanced graphical options, improved modding, rebuilt multiplayer and more.

With the latest update launched January 9, 2025, Beamdog said "This release was developed for personal enjoyment and out of goodwill for our fellow players and creators by unpaid software engineers from the NWN community" noting these new key features of the update:

  • Multisample anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering now built in
  • Tracy profiler with an extensive collection of instrumentation points now compiled in and available to all players and server admins
  • Many new NWScript functions
  • New logging framework
  • Major networking code improvements
  • Major performance improvements
  • Script compiler improvements from the open-source release
  • Toolset quality of life improvements

I'm only waiting for a single feature that probably will never be implemented to jump back in. The party direct control, as we have on the Infinity Engine games or on NWN2.

And what exactly is Beamdog doing now?

Looks like getting ready to be subsumed by Aspyr? Mythforce didn't seem to do well, their other internal projects got cancelled, and after all the layoffs it started feeling... eerily quiet at Beamdog. The Android versions of their rpg re-releases have been pretty much abandoned, you can't even install PST if you're on newer Android, but it does look like Mythforce is still being updated.

Edit: NWNEE got updated on Android a month ago - that's after... almost 2 years of silence on that platform?
