If you want to make backups of your game saves, the free and open source tool Ludusavi is an essential item to put in your toolbox. The developer just put up a new release, v0.28.0, which includes a bunch of fixes and new features.
Cross-platform so you can run it on Linux (including Steam Deck), Windows and macOS. Fully featured with the ability to detect thousands of games across Steam, GOG, Epic, Heroic Launcher, Lutris and more. It has a full user interface, as well as command-line tools. Useful for backing up to another drive or anywhere else like somewhere on the cloud.
For this release here's the new features added:
- On Linux, for Lutris roots that point to a Flatpak installation, Ludusavi now checks
$XDG_DATA_HOME
and$XDG_CONFIG_HOME
inside of the Flatpak installation of Lutris.- Custom games now let you specify installed folder names. This can be used to satisfy the and path placeholders in cases where Ludusavi can't automatically detect the right folder. For more info, see the custom games document.
- On the "other" screen, there is a new option to skip backups when saves are only removed but not added/updated. This can be useful because uninstalling a game may cause some of its data (but not all) to be removed, but you may not want to exclude that data from your backups yet.
- CLI:
config show
command.- CLI: The
backup
,restore
,cloud upload
, andcloud download
commands now support a--gui
option for graphical dialog prompts.- CLI: The
backup
andrestore
commands now support a--dump-registry
option, which includes the serialized registry content in the output. This may be useful if you're consuming the--api
output to back up with another tool, but don't have a good way to check the registry keys directly.- CLI: The
find
command now supports--fuzzy
and--multiple
options. This is also available for theapi
command'sfindTitle
request.- CLI: The
wrap
command now supports several options from thebackup
command:--path
,--format
,--compression
,--compression-level
,--full-limit
,--differential-limit
,--cloud-sync
,--no-cloud-sync
.
There's some other behaviour changes and bug fixes too.

Someone in the SDH discord mentioned they were working on a Decky plugin for ludasavi. If and when they PR it to the plugin database I'm definitely going to give it a whirl. The concept of the base program is awesome on it's own, and being able to easily use it on my deck sounds even better.
