EchoPatch mod is a great way to modernise the classic shooter FEAR

With the news recently about Monolith Productions closing, perhaps you might be wanting to jump back into the classic shooter FEAR (stylised as F.E.A.R.). Here's a mod to make the experience better. At least perhaps until we know any improvements GOG will make with their plan to put FEAR into their Preservation Program.

The EchoPatch was released recently bringing with it a bunch of enhancements like HUD Scaling, a Framerate Limiter, an FPS Drop Fix, the option to Disable Letterboxing, Auto Resolution detection, an option to Skip Splash-screens, an Infinite Flashlight and more.

I've tested it and thanks to the improvements for modding in a recent Proton Experimental update, the mod will run out of the box if you set it to use that on Steam. Or, if you're running it outside of Steam (like GOG with the Heroic Games Launcher), the latest GE-Proton will also work. I couldn't get it to work with Proton 9 even with setting WINEDLLOVERRIDES.

Really seems like a great way to replay this classic that I have fond memories of.

Back in the 2000's, there was this push to improve the physics and AI of games, FEAR being one of the best examples. But suddenly in the 2010's all of that was gone, physics and AI took a backseat, together with innovation.

Some say the culprit was the weak CPUs (AMD "jaguar" cores) of the XBOne and PS4. I think there is more to blame than that.

I think that the move away from things like physics/AI is in the 2010's is probably a case of games getting more popular. The people in charge became corp types instead of gamers. The suits want to see things whereas gamers are more likely inclined by gameplay and mechanics that are essentially invisible.

You see the same thing with shiny UIs that have slow and clunky back ends.

In the other thread about the FEAR mod someone made a comment about why the constant push for graphics and I think it is the same. The suits want more flash. Which is insane to me since for the last few years Steam has shown people are playing games that are 5-10 years old more than all this modern "trash".
