11 bit studios have announced today that their popular city building survival strategy game Frostpunk from 2018 is getting a remake in Unreal Engine 5.
Why? Well, they no longer develop their own in-house game engine they called "Liquid Engine" and Frostpunk 2 also uses Unreal Engine 5. They said they've wanted to continue working on the original Frostpunk, but their old engine was showing a lot of limitations. So they're going back to the start with Frostpunk 1886.
They said it's not just a plain recreation though. It will have "improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer" and serve as a "great introduction to the world of Frostpunk for newcomers, but also a title that die-hard fans of the game would love to play on repeat". They also have plans to add in "tons of new content, new mechanics, new events, technologies, and buildings" and more. 11 bit studios are also finally looking to add in official mod support too.

It will release sometime in 2027. The current version is rated Steam Deck Playable by Valve, and works well on desktop Linux with Proton (Gold on ProtonDB).
Personally, I've still not had the chance to actually play it. I don't even have a copy of it. Am I really missing out on something here? Let me know what you think.
