Endless Legend for Linux started off so well only to fall flat on its face months later. Sadly, it now seems Endless Legend will not be coming to Linux, as the developers state it’s really not a priority any more.

QuoteThe other consideration is the overhead a new platform will bring. I assume Linux users want the same quality of service than the PC and Mac users. If we add a new platform, it means 50% more management time for the builds, QA, and technical support. We are a small studio, and our resources are not infinite. Is it better to have engineers and producers focus on new cool content for the current customers or to have the Linux version ? I think the answer is obvious for us now.

So the bottom line is that the Linux version of Endless Legend is still on hold until further notice.

See the full forum post on it here.

I hope no one picked it up on their previous promise of a Linux port, we say it time and time again, do not buy a game until it is RELEASED for Linux. That simple thing to remember will save you money and frustrations.

I'm not surprised though, as we all know we are still a minority, and it doesn't make sense for everyone.

Just keep supporting those who support us, and...move along, nothing to see here.

Worlds of Magic and Age of Wonders III release for Linux on the 19th of March and 14th of April respectively. They will make the wait for Endless Legend for Linux a hell of a lot easier and will get full price purchases from me to show my appreciation.

Oh, wow, what a typically rhetoric and politic question.

To be honest, I don't really care. No tux, no bux. Easy as that. I'm truly living by that example for well over a year now and I don't regret it at all.

If there is a "promise" (ahem, Contagion anyone) for a Linux-version *someday* I'll simply wait for *someday* until you see any of my hard earned bucks!

He is right. Maybe in a future it will make sense for them

This explanation is nonsense. They would have known about this before the game launched, before making promises. This is classic bait and switch: promising the moon to get preorders/early access money, then removing the rug from under our feet. Very shady.

I wonder how big Triumph and Wastelands are in comparison to Amplitude...

Well, of course. But why state the opposite before? Couldn't they have said this from the very beginning without getting our hopes up? Or were they betting on some people to buy the game on an empty promise?

I have absolutely NO problem if they say "Sorry, we are a small team, we simply can't afford a linux port at the moment, as it wont pay off" but stating they are working on one and then suddenly changing their opinion seems very, very unprofessional.

(I'd think about that, even as a windows customer!)

no tux, no bux. well said. I am very far away from anything like windows, so are people (non g33ks btw.) around me as well. looks like valve + tux supporing games are getting my money. the others wont.

Valve hasn't infinite resources too but they still support the three major platforms.
Ya, well, to be fair tho, valve has access to many more resources than a small, (more or less) no-name team ;)

The thing that really stinks here is the attitude "promise first, then take it back".

If they'd said they are gonna evaluate or a simple "no", I wouldn't be mad at them, not at all. In fact I'm not mad now, I just wont buy anything from them :)

Perhaps, though they probably still have more resources than Amplitude does and they also have direct gain for supporting it.

Can't say I'm too pissed off by this port getting cancelled, but I don't like the way such companies go ahead and tease us about linux versions so as to gain our support/pre-orders, then forget all about us.

Middleware again, sigh...

I've got 60 games on my wishlist so I won't shed any tears. If they want my money I'll be here waiting on the Linux version. Until then I've got lots of options.

I got gifted this during the steam holiday sale and it looks like I won't be playing anytime soon. Not the first time Amplitude has treated its customers, potential or otherwise, this way. A shame.

Not the first time? Can you elaborate on any other such instances?

Well, that's a bummer. The game is truly amazing. I'm guessing they'll wait and see how the whole Steam OS thing rolls out (especially with the announcement Windows 10 will be for all intents and purposes free even for pirates). As somebody who owns the game for Windows I've to say that the dev team are really nice and really open to the community. However they are indeed a small team and there is an long enough list of outstanding problems with the Windows and OSX versions and some of these things, especially the performance, have been an issue for some time. I'm guessing they had to make the tough call and ax the Linux version (for the time being at least). I know it sucks but I sincerely believe that this is just one of the tough business decisions companies have to make sometimes and not just passing Linux as a platform in general.

the linux port should be coming at a later date. they're still pulling out updates and such ...
thing is, GOL seams to be too aggressive to their approach.

That's okay, my money only goes to Linux games.

If you need to be the size of Valve to afford to include the third platform, things look grimmer than I thought. :D

Middleware again, sigh...

This WILL get better in the future...but yes, middleware is the biggest hurdle for most of these ports. People use middleware to speed up development, but if that middleware is not properly cross-platform, generally we are the ones that suffer :(
