It's great to see bigger games coming to Linux like Empire: Total War, but having Linux only multiplayer does make the experience less fun. Feral Interactive are trying to fix this for us with a beta test.

We are a little late on this, as it got buried in our growing inbox, sorry folks!

QuoteWe have updated the Mac OS X and Linux/SteamOS versions of Empire: Total War so that both versions now use a platform-agnostic maths library. This modification allows Mac OS X and Linux gamers to play against each other, both online and on LAN. Previously, this was impossible because the original library would work differently on different platforms, causing the game to be unable to keep in sync across platforms.

This should at least open up the multiplayer a little more, but having it compatible with Windows would of course be much better.

You can see the full post on it here.

About Empire: Total War
Dominate the 18th century on land and sea. Command the seas, control the land, forge a new nation, and conquer the globe. Empire: Total War takes the Total War franchise to the eighteenth century Age of Enlightenment — a time of political upheaval, military advancements, and radical thought, captured in stunning detail in Empire: Total War.

Empire: Total War introduces a host of revolutionary new features, including true 3D naval combat. For the first time in the Total War series, you will be able to intuitively command single ships or vast fleets upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board, taking control of your men as they fight hand-to-hand on the decks of these wooden behemoths.
