The Minecraft developers has finally done something about the boring combat in Minecraft. This plus the other changes actually makes me somewhat interested in the game again.
Currently the .jar file Minecraft.net supplies for Linux won't let me download when I launch it with OpenJDK 7 or 8:
QuoteDownloading: https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/launcher.pack.lzma (try 4/10)
Exception: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unexpected error: java.security.InvalidAlgorithmParameterException: the trustAnchors parameter must be non-empty
I've tweeted it to them, so hopefully someone sees it.
The combat is no longer mindless clicking as fast as you can, and requires a little bit more skill. People will be torn on it, but I think it's a much better approach.

I'm pretty sure that their only officially-supported JRE is the Oracle one, though it's a shame if OpenJDK stopped working with this update. Anyway, it does sound fun, perhaps I'll dust off an ancient save of mine and make another effort at diving in here. It's been awhile!

One of the best computer games ever.
It's not just a game for me. It's a kind of religion

Embrace, extend, extinguish. I'll be using Minetest for my voxel block game needs from now on.

I've already been looking forward for this update and am looking forward giving this new version a whirl.
I have to say though that I don't care much for the combat. While I always play in survival mode, I play Minecraft for gathering and crafting stuff; I love to do farming, make sure that I have enough supplies, build myself a "cozy cottage" (thanks to paulsoaresjr) and then, when I have settled the most basic stuff, explore the world of Minecraft. Minecraft is such a relaxing game to me and that's exactly why I like it so much.
By the way, v1.9 runs fine here with openjdk version "1.8.0_74".

This is specifically when downloading a brand new version. Not just grabbing the new version from an already installed launcher.

Is it possible to install Minecraft on Steam?

Minecraft: Storymode is on Steam, and you can add Minecraft via "Add a Non-Steam Game to My library" option. Otherwise, no.

So I just did some testing and I am having an issue with crashes on Minecraft 1.9. Game can't even start, runs into OpenGL errors. Doing some digging and it looks like it is probably

Boring? It was a lot of fun esp. if you play Panem-Like Games or build your own weapons (e.g. cannons) and so on. Even Arena & Capture The Flag worked fine. If that is boring then you still have tons of mods, which adds different combat styles and weapons.
BTW: Anyone has an idea where can I get the Modpack "Magic Farm 2". I have installed FTB, but it seems "Magic Farm 2" is gone :(. In particular I'm looking for the included Mods, which created the insane Dungeons with End Bosses, new monsters, RPG Elements and new spawners & traps like the TNT-Zombie-Spawner or the 360 Degree Arrow Trap.

I just re-tried it, and it now seems to work again with OpenJDK 8.
