My wife would like to switch. She hates Windows. The only thing holding her back is QuickBooks, which she needs for her bookkeeping business. I haven't been able to determine if it will run flawlessly under Wine.

From what I've been able to determine, yes it will. You may have to install the 32-bit version, though. I found this article from 2016:

The instructions will have to be adapted as PlayOnLinux isn't really much of a thing anymore. I haven't had the opportunity to test it yet.

For an "average person" this is not helpful at all.

There needs to be step by step instructions. Telling someone to "go search for stuff yourself" will probably do more harm than good. People will see endless arguments about what is the best distro, vastly different suggestion listicles, etc... And then they will just give up.

If there could be like three suggestions:

option1 - the beginner - mint - here's a step by step
option2 - the intermediate - fedora - here's a step by step
option3 - the advanced - arch - here's a step by step

that's just a guess off the top of my head, but that would actually be helpful.

Totally agree with others: they should just DO protondb. Either buy them and just take it over as official, or do exactly the same. The current "deck verified" is totally worthless. I absolutely love steam, but this whole thing is such a self inflicted wound, I hate to see them keep doing it. Cmon valve, do better!

It's really not that much like Rimworld at all, so don't go into it looking for the same experience.

Personally I like it for the whole vibe of clawing your way back from near-destruction, having to literally put your ship back together before facing the bigger challenges out there. Been a bit since I've played, since I want to let a few updates pile up first, but I've really enjoyed my time with it.

@soulsource AFAIK the game is using a native Vulkan renderer so this is not related to Direct3D nor OpenGL.

it may be time to remember/find how to run steam flatpak using mesa-git for early access to patches, was pretty easy to use when Returnal needed a workaround iirc

For me, I very much appreciate Valve's emphasis on the fact that the SteamDeck is *your* device. If you want to put in a third party M.2 drive, you can. If you want to upgrade storage with a microSD, you can. If you want to replace the joysticks/battery/other internals, you can get inside easily enough (screws, not glue).

Also, if you *don't* want to run SteamOS on it, then you are *not* locked into that OS. You can install Linux on it, you can install Windows on it. You can probably install BSD or Android onto it.

I'm also very happy that the Deck hardware, via official SteamDock or third-party usb-c dock, allows you to transform the SteamDeck into a 'desktop' computer where you can plug in keyboard/mouse/external joypads and an external display.

Practically every other console on the market is a scumbag money-grab, where you are locked into an ecosystem and have no say over your own property.

Much like the point of Deck Verified itself, it's not specifically aimed at all of us that know exactly how to check and find info. It's for the more casuals to get a readout quickly at a glance if it will work :)

I don't know Direct3D well enough (by heart) to make any definite statements, but this sounds like a game bug being worked around (namely that a certain memory layout is assumed instead of queried - not sure if this is only an OpenGL thing or also needed in Direct3D). If that's the case, the game might break on Windows too, with future GPU driver updates...

Nope, it specifically needs the part that adds in force_64k_sparse_alignment. You'll need new Mesa.

I guess this is completely worthless for anyone (like the readers of this site) who could infer these things from the Steam Deck rating, but it will have some value to people who are less close to the details.

There are so many 8BitDo controllers, it's pain. Ultimate, U2, U2C, etc., each with Wired/Bluetooth/Wireless variant. I have the Wukong-themed one, it's Ultimate 2C, I believe. Will it benefit from this support?

I find those GTK "tabs on menu bar" to be so ugly. But the rest of it looks brilliant. I'll give this a go. I've played around with CoreCTL before, but it's definitely not as pretty or as intuitive as this looks.

Such a cool game and concept, and really nicely executed too. I'll give this another go, I think. I was slightly turned off by how suddenly certain events could crop up and leave you grasping to get the necessary buildings/infrastructure in place. But with a story-mode, this should be much better guided and telegraphed.

Well people who are hooked into GamePass or Kernel-AC are always excluded from any transition to Linux.
The nanosecond they realise they loose those things, the drive will be formatted and restored to Windows.

NOW If GamePass and Windows subscriptions get too close, then I think that will certainly sway even more people.
MS will be increasing sub cost of GamePass soon, and Windows may well become a subscription service in the soon future. Pay $20 a year to start with, with that value going up each year.

I am quite annoyed at Monster Sanctuary because they did release early access in-development builds on Itch, but the full release is only available on Steam and, much as I love Valve, it feels like a bait-and-switch.

Black Mesa probably is the best remaster/remake in history. Really love what those guys have achieved, so kudos! (and now i want to go for another round, despite this huge pile.... )

They probably are using a bumped version of Clausewitz.

Does seem to be the case. It looks very similar to the existing CK3 and Vicky3 games, so likely a slightly updated version of that.

There are old games that are worth playing (or at least trying) even today, some 30 years after release. This is not really one of them and I really wonder why would anyone put any amount of effort to resurrect it. Games like Doom, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D or Blood aren't considered cult classics for nothing...

They should do *exactly* ProtonDB. Just like what GOG does with howlongtobeat, when they show you "time to beat the game" straight at the product page with data taken from hltb. Steam should do the same with ProtonDB and it's done.
