No worries! Sometimes it's very easy to miss the odd comment. :-)

Quoting: dudiblahBreaks cinnamon on mint 18.1 with kernel 4.11. 4.10 is fine however.

You can't install the Nvidia-drivers on 4.11.0 due to policy changes in the Kernel. The Kernel just don't allow any non GPL code anymore. The Nvidia driver uses a mix of MIT/GPL License and that's the Problem.

There are 3 ways to fix that:
1) Patch the Nvidia driver, which is a legal issue.
2) Patch the Linux Kernel to allow non GPL code too.
3) Wait for 4.11.1, which should come this weekend and will allow mixed Licenses.

I was referring to the RTS's that kind of feel like / play like the good old Age of Empires series. With lots of medieval armies and whatnot. But on your list are a few games I wasn't aware are out for Linux / aware of at all. Will check them out!
You now reminded me to try 0AD once again.

The G29 and its FFB works pretty well, you just have to put it on PS3 mode, as in PS4 is sometimes cease to work after quiting the game, and reboot does not always fix the problem. It can also happen that the G29 will be aligned badly, so I suggest to always go in custom event to check if everything works fine before trying online event or to go career mode.

If the wheel is not aligned correctly, you have to close the game, and then unplug and replug it and check if it works. If not you have to repeat the same operation.

Otherwise the FFB just works as good as on windows imo. It is slightly more precise on PS4 mode, but it can buggy. Otherwise it's similar to FFB on windows 7, and even better than on windows 10.

Quoting: buenaventuraSo how are you liking the expedition? I just lost on the 6th map, mauled by giant crab, after being seriously ravaged by rampant alcoholism and pyromania ^__^' I could not enter any event without the place being mysteriously on fire afterwards! Also, everyone rebelled when the whisky ran out. It was fun anyhow! Will try again with a new explorer.

Well, there's a few things to note. I'm not 'just' playing Curious Expedition. Just recently been playing lots of '7 Days To Die' early access game, and finding that is very addictive. (Plus other stuff.)

In 'The Curious Expedition' I've tried out 2 characters, and played one of those until I died (approx 3-4 expeditions) and then switched to another character - a brand new game, and I've done about 6 expeditions with that one. The very last expedition - I didn't think I was going to make it. Two of my party had turned into Abominations, with cannibalistic tendencies. By the end of that game, everyone was dead apart from the Main Character, who had eaten the Mount as a last resort instead of starvation.

Played about 2-3 hours so far, and it isn't quite satisfying my gaming needs - rogue-like, exploration, survival - where FTL (Faster Than Light) does succeed. I think one of my issues with T.C.E. is that it throws completely random events at you, and many of them you can't react or counter, so you just have to suffer the consequences. Let's just say I'm probably going to have to go further and further in the game and see how it develops.

Quoting: Alm888Does it know how to stream from Linux? (I really don't know, no joking.)

Yes. I tried streaming from my:
  • Ubuntu 16.04 laptop(full success)

  • Ubuntu 16.04 desktop (no sound streamed sadly, probably some configuration-specific issues - I had to install some custom sound driver on original installation of 12.04 if I recall correctly)

  • and Macbook (worked ok after steam client update)

Quoting: meggermancurrently the AMD FOSS drivers are sitting around 20% behind the binary nvidia drivers.

80%!? Are they really that close?

Wouldn't surprise me. I mean, it would vary a lot I imagine from use case to use case and different applications etc.

But running an AMD 380X myself on open source drivers, I've had very little complaints and generally good performance even in games that supposedly aren't supported with Mesa. There are some exceptions though (looking at YOU, Deus Ex: MD).

Quoting: FaalagornYup, basically people are fed up y long waiting times, but I find most other arguments from the review (and other reviews) mention invalid. Purchase now should be based mostly on whether you thing the game at the current state is worth it - if not, wait for a more complete build :) Unless you are dedicated enough to help improve the game and/or want to play with mods filling the gaps with missing features.

Yup seems fair.
Will hold off.
I got burned by quite a few Early Access titles when early access was new so I have a cynical disposition towards them.

Quoting: Alm888Eeww... What does Steam-link have to do with Linux?
Plenty actually. It requires a PC to use, like a Linux PC.

Does it know how to stream from Linux? (I really don't know, no joking.)

The only thing I know about Steam-link is that is that one thing that killed "Steam Machines" (because in place of unreasonably expensive and impotent "Steam Machine" one can get a cheap "Steam-link" and stream all of the games from Windows PC everyone has by default).

I use the Speedlink Drift OZ racing wheel which costs around 50 € (~60 $). It works pretty well out of the box with Solus except force feedback. So I guess it should work with other distros as well. I should mention that I play racing games only every now and then so I don't need a professional wheel and I can get over it that ff doesn't work.

Quoting: ProfessorKaos64Which wheel has the best compatibility to feature-set ratio? high end / low end price?

That's actually a two sided answer.

The G920 is the only wheel with 100% support. So technically has the best compatibility.

However, the G29 has the ability to identify itself as a G27 (and other). Which allows it to pass detection by games that feel the need to do their own detection. The G29 shares its driver with the other Logitech wheels (except the G920) and has a similar (limited) feature set.

B) some people, like you, don't seem to like it when I am optimistic about things. Take a look at your comments on the "steam has 3k linux games" article as an example

Quoting: HihiDanniThe per-game driver optimizations on Windows aren't anything you'll find in the driver settings - those are completely different. These optimizations are on a lower level and hidden from the user. They're designed to work better with each game's misuse of 3D APIs. This is a big reason behind the push for Vulkan and similar APIs, as the driver developers don't have to spend as much time working around bugs in games because the games themselves have to use the API correctly.

In reality it's really not as simple as using the old "misusing APIs" meme and saying that's the only reason for game ready drivers. :-) I explained a little about some of the factors here:

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/nvidia-38122-driver-released-with-lots-of-bug-fixes-and-newer-vulkan-support.9631/page=3#r92884

In the UK you can get them at those prices at Game.co.uk and with free delivery. I picked up the Steam Link for that price the last time it was on sale at Game. One of the best bargain purchases I've made as its worked out great for my girlfriend and I on the couch (though mostly for Pacman :D ). It's a shame that AMD hardware video encoding still does not work on Linux for Steam In-Home streaming. Come on Valve. VA-API encoding has been around for ages.

Oh and as this is my first post on GOL, Hello to the GOL community!

I've been playing this with a Steam Controller, and I've gotten as far as unlocking Professional level in the Championships. I'm not sure I'll get any further without a wheel though.

My favourite track is Pikes Peak - all gravel, sliding all the way - awesome stuff! ^_^
