I was just playing "Super Skidmarks" on FS-UAE, and thought that this is a genre that's been severely underrepresented in recent years.

Quoting: buenaventuraI got the Humble Positive Bundle for Curious Expedition, that game seems to never go down very much in price, so 10 dollars for it is sort of a bargain.

Yes, my purchase of the (full) Humble Positive Bundle was due to wanting to try out Curious Expedition. That game was the main influence for me, but the others (for Linux) also helped. Even Underrail, which I too would like to try under WINE.

Tempted by the new tinyBuild bundle, mainly for "The Final Station" game... but I own some of that bundle already (well the Linux titles that appeal to me). So, I haven't jumped on that one yet.

Huh, long ago I was very fond of an arcade game that was called "Super Sprint" and later I also enjoyed "Death Rally" on PC. This looks similar to both of those and I don´t think I have seen someting like it on linux, so I´ll certainly add my voice to a porting.

True, but Mantis is much prettier, I think, and there's something about how "vertical" Little Racers camera stands that put me off it. I tended to find that I needed to run each race in that game a couple of times because a few turns were so sudden, I couldn't prepare for them. From memory, it was also a wee grindy to get better cars, but no idea how Mantis compares in that regard.

I do enjoy this kind of game though, so it's good to see some (quality) competition.

Wargame Red Dragon (and other Wargame games)
W40K DoW 2
Wyrmsum
Company of Heroes 2
Nightside
Planetary Annihilation Titan (i boycott them)
Star Ruler 2 (more like a 4X but still a gem)
... and others i can't think about right now

Sadly there's little we can do to further the development of Linux games except for supporting those who keep their promises and release on Linux. I'm sure there's developers out there who want to tap into the Linux gaming market without exploiting it.

Buying because "Linux is promised" seems like pre-ordering to me - you just buy the promise, and usually people have a hard time keeping their promises.

I'd love to see a nice RTS released on Linux though. There's only 0AD out there, which has been in development for years and somehow doesn't seem to be making much progress.

There has been too many promises for Linux native or port in the gaming industry. Really though, we should thank them for teaching is to keep our money until it actually release on Linux.

Linux gamers on Arch may want to hold off on updating due to openssl breaking some games (updated)
By Samsai, 11 May 2017 at 9:44 am UTC

Quoting: danyskQuestion: do the games run for you if you just run Steam as:

STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 steam

without altering your installation with compatibility libraries? Looks like the Steam runtime ships the old version of the library, but it does not get loaded as the host library are preferred.
That should work, as I tried loading the OpenSSL libs from the runtime and that worked. However, loading the whole runtime means reintroducing the good old libstdc++.so incompatibility for open source AMD drivers which means Steam will stop working entirely. You can probably preload system libstdc++.so and then go with runtime libraries but it's going to be a bit of a mess regardless. So, you might as well use compatibility libraries for SSL.

NVIDIA 381.22 driver released with lots of bug fixes and newer Vulkan support
By tuubi, 11 May 2017 at 9:16 am UTC

Quoting: GuestWhat fixed it for me was I uninstalled the nvidia drivers (and purged them) then installed the newer kernel (I was on 4.4.0-53) to 4.4.0-77.

This time around installed the 381.22 driver (again from PPA/mint driver manager) and when I rebooted everything was fine.

So moral of the story, seems if you update your nvidia driver and get the black desktop with mouse cursor and nothing else, try updating your kernel and reinstalling the driver.
For me X would not start at all, so my problem was not the same as yours. But as I said, the fix was quick and easy. I'm running kernel 4.10 by the way.

I got the Humble Positive Bundle for Curious Expedition, that game seems to never go down very much in price, so 10 dollars for it is sort of a bargain.

And it is really good! Very captivating, easy to play in short bursts, a great story machine - I am currently exploring with an all female team led by Marie Kingsley, we are pacifist, but our translator has developed a bad case of pyromania and sets stuff on fire all the time. The art and music are great. Reminds me of FTL but with more narrative and depth.

The developer seems very nice too, recently there was a big update adding arctic areas and some new mechanics, and that is included in the base game, they don't charge for it or anything, which seems nice. And yeah, linux support just works, no tweaking no nothing needed.

Quoting: SchattenspiegelThe CLOVE was the first English trading ship to arrive in Japan in 1613. It's main goal was establishing trade relationships (especially spices) in the far east.
Other countries like the Portuguese and the Dutch had landed a few years earlier but since Creative Assembly is a British developer, choosing the English landing slightly after the end of the timeline of Shogun 2 (1545-1600 if I remember correctly), could be another hint.
Educational post of the day. :D
