Diluvion, the deep sea exploration game with RPG elements is getting a Linux beta
By Anza, 22 April 2017 at 8:46 am UTC
I would suppose there's difference if port is done internally or by external porter. If port is done internally, game developer can interpret the numbers as they see fit. They get exactly the same amount of money for each sale anyway. Though there's no absolute guarantee that port will ever leave the beta stage.
For external porters, it sounds like that at least Feral Interactive has contract where they get money only from Linux sales.
Sounds like developer just didn't do enough testing. Pretty good game for somebody who actually enjoys finding bugs :)

Quoting: NanobangThat looks ... nice! Very, very nice. Third "person" underwater action with strategic cutaway noodling. I'm intrigued.
My one hesitation with this beta, as indeed with all Linux betas on Steam, is I simply don't want the purchase to count as anything but a Linux purchase --- but to be honest, I don't know if it would or not. I've been following the Brotherhood lads as they work to bring STASIS to Linux, but I've not bought that either, for the same reason. Now I'm wondering if (and frankly, hoping that) I'm all wrong and buying these games but only playing the Linux beta will count as a Linux purchase. Could someone please enlighten benighted old me about this?

Quoting: F.UltraQuoting: BeamboomQuoting: F.UltraLooks like most negative reviews comes from fiddly controls. Hopefully that is something that they can and/or will improve.
Fiddly controls, camera issues, bad interface, unpolished, multiple bugs... To quote Destructoid:
"I can't remember the last time I had to go to a game's forum to get a bug resolved just so I could advance. It's a lesson in wonderful concept and poor execution."
https://www.destructoid.com/review-diluvion-422788.phtml
I ignored the comments about bugs due to the "to get a bug resolved", too me that sounds like the devs are active and are fixing the bugs as soon as they are found.

Wow, I didn't notice this game and release here at all, but by coincidence I read this article and thought: "I wonder if it's on Linux..". Came here, searched and bam, there it is! Day-1 no less. Makes me a very happy penguin to see the indie scene continue embracing Linux, and that the chance to find a game like this on our platform is so high. Much respect to the indie devs, and Ethan Lee of course!
Now all I need is more disposable income and time to finish some games before buying more..!

To reiterate the market share problem: a single new console release already put more systems in the wild in a single month than the steam linux marketplace.
This is why I'm hesitant to emphasise the sales argument to developers too much, especially now that there are so many games on linux that I am no longer able to buy every game which I like the look of.

Great! I have been holding off on playing the first game until I was certain that this one really would be ported (same thing with "Divinty Original Sin") because I really detest having a series of games "interrupted" in some manner. So I will get right on installing the first title.

Well, of course we all know this, but think of it this way: Their statement was a marketing statement. There are SteamOS users who only know their gaming box by that name, so by saying 'Linux and SteamOS' they make sure to be clear to those users who only know it by that name.

Hey Liam,
Nice game :p I am The Kyew!
I was waiting for an upload to finish and found myself 30 minutes in this game :p
The best way I found was to take corners and make the trolls follow you, so if you need to make it harder for players make some trolls popup from the corners or move unexpectedly, but the current behavior is better to give the game a certain mechanic.
And make the fire automatic my hand is killing me now :p
And yes the speedy troll kindof breaks the game but its a fun game in an unexpected way!
I've been reading your news for quite some time now, so since I made an account I just wanted to say keep up the good work and I admire your passion for linux and gaming.
Cheers!

I think this is one game that would be worth a remake. Notice I said "remake" and not "remaster". I mean actually remaking the game with the same location and story, or at least making another game that takes place in Stillwater. I think it was by far the best location of all the Saints Row games and one of the best open worlds ever.

While programming is hard, also estimating is hard if you're doing something that you haven't been already done several times. And on top of that working on foreign code makes things even harder.
With you own code you should understand what it does...
Not announcing deadlines publicly seems to be pretty good strategy. In very ideal case everything is actually ready when deadline comes, but in real world that's not usually the case. So in order to keep the deadline, something has to give. Cutting features works, but doing that in the last minute is risky. Though if only Linux port is missing the features, Linux users will not be happy...
Another casualty of with keeping the deadline no matter what is quality. Some bugs found in internal testing might not be fixed before the release. Also if testing is lagging behind, plenty of bugs might have not been found yet.
So keep that in mind when you demand immediate release...
Based on the interviews though, there's plenty of experienced developers in Linux porter community. Pretty interesting stuff in every interview.

I think quite a lot of that is in fact wishful thinking. But what the heck, go for it.
I do think it's not unrealistic to figure Linux for continued slow rise in use. There are just so many barriers to Linux use that have been reduced or even eliminated over time, and we can see continued progress on most of those that remain. And we also have inroads from Chromebooks, which are sorta-maybe Linux but are at least, importantly, clearly not Windows and so continue to pick away at Microsoft's control over the desktop.
Unfortunately the biggest barrier to increased Linux market share is also the one falling about the slowest: Lack of machines in stores and on the big websites selling desktop computers with Linux preinstalled.
A potential wild card: If Trump gets pissy enough with China and there's some kind of trade war, after many years of bureaucratic initiatives with no follow-through the Chinese might get serious about defenestration. That would in one fell swoop shove Linux into the double digits. Of course we might be too busy dealing with the world economy crashing to care.
By Purple Library Guy, 21 April 2017 at 7:17 pm UTC
Quoting: pixeltuxTo your last point, Liam, I think we're going to hit critical mass soon. We're going to see people start to adopt Linux as their desktop operating system at an exponential rate. I predict we'll hit 6% in two years and it will grow from there. I imagine we might get to 18% on the Steam HW survey before we see a slowdown in growth, but it will continue to grow.
Especially considering that, when people realize many EFIs actually prevent them from putting Linux on their PC, there will be some outrage and people will buy their laptops from System76. I don't know how much of this is wishful thinking, but I've never been accused of being a pessimist.
Also, I finally stopped lurking and decided to post. :P

(basically two files to be dropped in the game's main folder)
The only way to "fix" graphical glitches for me (on the VP version) is to disable dynamic lights, which unfortunately makes the game look really bland.
All in all both versions have advantages and disadvantages though, the missing dialog/sound drops+ controller issues and the missing Ambient Occlusion on the Wine version makes it a no go for me, while the rendering issues on the VP's port are also annoying enough to avoid playing it.
If they could/would fix that it would be perfect, well...almost.

Quoting: adamhmTry different radio stations - I found that some of them played nothing but the interludes between tracks in the official Linux release (could try running it through the Steam Runtime if you're not already?). Never had any sound issues in Wine here though, differences could be due to system configuration. You're right, on some stations there were only commercials. Found out though that it can be easily fixed by installing the "High Quality Radio mod" from https://www.saintsrowmods.com/forum/threads/high-quality-radio-mod.9515/
(also it looks like AO was responsible for some of the graphical glitches I was encountering in the official release)

I don't quite get that. Hopefully we're existing, but we're not customers until we buy their product, which most of us are clever enough not to do before they actually release it in a form we can use. No Tux no Bux. If anything it's the reverse: Only in the case of Kickstarters we may in fact be "existing customers" before anything is released.
By Purple Library Guy, 21 April 2017 at 7:06 pm UTC
Quoting: wintermuteQuoteHaving Linux support fall behind other platforms is a sad reality that I think Linux users need to be understanding of. If a game is already released on another platform, then I'd have more respect for a developer who gives priority to existing customers over customers they don't yet have - the opposite only suggests that we'll be treated poorly when we are finally supported!
Except in the case of Kickstarters we're all existing customers, so we're already being treated poorly.
