Thanks for this very comprehensive review Samsai.
Quoting: buenaventuraI liked Undertale alot, it was really funny and moving, and surprising! I just wanted to contribute that you can use qjoypad (available in ubuntu repos, and probably elsewhere) to map the keyboard buttons to your gamepad (works with my SNES-like one). Useful software!Antimicro is another popular choice for this task and the one I prefer.

There's just so many improvements that can be made, they're not planning to go into Beta until they've finished with all the feature development (they're planning to just bugfix in Beta, so maybe Beta would be quite a short stage? Imho once they reach Beta you can bet on a release fairly soon, relatively speaking) which could take forever if they keep on thinking of new stuff yeah, but I can understand that it is nearly impossible for an open-source project (as awesome as this one is) with little funding to keep up with current proprietary game quality. Perhaps they should just jump to Beta, release, and patch from there (they could do fairly big gaps between releases (other than bugfix and balance updates), longer than between Alphas so that a metagame can develop over the course of each release) but perhaps they don't feel that it's really release quality.
I know they were planning to do a sequel once they've finished this game but imho they should release a Beta for 0AD sooner than they seem to be planning, ditch the sequel idea and just focus on making 0AD a great AAA-quality competitive game with regular balance updates and much less regular big feature releases.
Imho they should go something like this:
Whenever-its-ready: Instead of releasing Alpha 22, release Beta 1 (package version 0.1)
Every month: Release a new Beta (package versions 0.x)
When vast majority of bugs gone/bug-wise it's release-ready: Release 0AD Season 1 (package version 1.0.0, use semantic versioning for future releases)
Over each Season, make bugfix releases as (x.y.z) z updates and balance changes as y updates (if both in one release, release as a y update)
Every year or every two years - make a new Season (x update) with all the non-bugfix/balance changes they couldn't include before due to release policy. This should be forked off the master branch of development (where all these changes should've been pushed) with a few Betas and RCs released for stability (as x.0.0-beta1, -beta2, -RC1 etc)

Quoting: Mountain ManI'm waiting for the game to actually leave alpha. It has been in development for nearly a decade, which is notable in and of itself since open source game projects tend to be abandoned after a couple of years, but I'm still suspicious that it will never really be finished.

I also played a lot of it during early access when there wasn't much to do. I crafted the best armor and weapons and stopped playing, as that was about it.
The game is so much better now, but I couldn't get myself to play it, I lose interest after 10 minutes.

Little known fact about the Berlin wall: The Americans and Brits were doing large scale sabotage which was crippling East Berlin's efforts to recover and reindustrialize after the war (and killing quite a few people). The wall was originally as much a response to that as it was an attempt to stop people leaving.

I've been following 0AD since 2011. This is grand news; it's not the best RTS out there yet (Warzone 2100, in the repos, still takes that prize), but these new improvements look divine.

Some thoughts on Albion Online with the final Beta
By Kimyrielle, 17 April 2017 at 4:13 pm UTC Likes: 2
That's pure speculation on my part, but I think MMOs are a "hit business", where titles need to grab considerable attention to florish. Players generally don't like playing in "empty" MMOs, and leave them quickly when they get the impression that their game isn't as populated as they desire. Looking at past titles, a MMO that doesn't grab hundreds of thousands of players right away will not grow into a large game later on, either. It it starts as a niche game, it will remain one.
This particular game doesn't strike me as one with hit potential. Let's face the truth: It's geared at hardcore players, and there aren't that many of them around. I wouldn't expect this game to storm the sales charts anytime soon, really. In the end, I know that hardcore players tend to look down on so-called 'casuals', but you can't have the cake and eat it. A game not appealing to 'casuals' will not sell millions of copies and thus will probably not feel populated.

Unity: Superkey+n (n= 0-9), Gnome: Super +Hover to app/Type and navigate with arrow key+Click/Execute key. Am I only one who have noticed this?
use the Dash to Dock extension on GNOME, not only can it give you a unity like launcher but it has the same functionality with superkey+n. it is highly configurable. you can even scroll the mouse wheel on the launcher to switch virtual desktops.

Java based game. If we download non-steam version for Linux, it download only .jar file, so we need install Java (Oracle or OpenJDK).
If we download Steam version, game come with bundled Java version from Oracle (don't know if this is legall - bundled proprietary java) but at latest it working out of box on Linux.
First launch on Ubuntu 17.04 Unity, it launch in windowed mode and half of game screen is cut off. Check in option - fullscreen mode is enabled, native resolution also set. WTF? Reboot game. Still the same. Uncheck fullscreen mode, and back again to fullscreen mode fix it.
