All Walls Must Fall sounds like a Kickstarter worth some Linux gamer attention

Yeah, right.
I'll buy it when it's released, it does look good. I like that they say "PC first" and include Windows, Mac and Linux in that category.

Starbound to get vastly expanded space travel in a big update
By ziabice, 17 April 2017 at 3:36 pm UTC

I bought this game when it was in Early Access, played 20 hours straight, it was fantastic, then "it should mature, lets wait", and I never played it again, and I hardly find the will to play it again, despite all the faboulous updates :(

I played it a lot when it was just pre-cooked in Early Access (about 60+ hours), and then i never managed to like it again despite many returns. Maybe the next update will bring my pleasure back ?

I just followed the basic instructions for Arch on the GitHub and it compiled fine, so perhaps this has been improved more recently.

Canonical drop the Unity desktop environment for Ubuntu favour of going back to GNOME

Quoting: LinuxwarperIs it me or is launching of apps in Unity much better than Gnome 3? I installed Gnome 3, to try it out, and it's app launching methods is lacking. Unity: Superkey+n (n= 0-9), Gnome: Super +Hover to app/Type and navigate with arrow key+Click/Execute key. Am I only one who have noticed this?

use the Dash to Dock extension on GNOME, not only can it give you a unity like launcher but it has the same functionality with superkey+n. it is highly configurable. you can even scroll the mouse wheel on the launcher to switch virtual desktops.
Cheers:)

Java based game. If we download non-steam version for Linux, it download only .jar file, so we need install Java (Oracle or OpenJDK).
If we download Steam version, game come with bundled Java version from Oracle (don't know if this is legall - bundled proprietary java) but at latest it working out of box on Linux.

First launch on Ubuntu 17.04 Unity, it launch in windowed mode and half of game screen is cut off. Check in option - fullscreen mode is enabled, native resolution also set. WTF? Reboot game. Still the same. Uncheck fullscreen mode, and back again to fullscreen mode fix it.

Doesnt this have to do with how long the game has been in beta and the constant server wipes the game has after every update?
I hope the game becomes more alive when its released, Im not a founder but I will probably get this one when its released.

So, I played… Undertale
By HadBabits, 17 April 2017 at 12:27 am UTC

It's been a while, but I still adore Undertale. It certainly isn't perfect, but I can forgive a lot of it due to this being a single person's project. That doesn't invalidate the criticism, but it personally helps me tolerate the flawed parts more. Several things could have used more of Toby Fox's attention, but I think he prioritized the core experience he wanted to make, and the game has all the more character for it. That said, I would love to see a collab game between Toby and Yacht Club Games (of Shovel Knight fame) :D

City builder 'Hearthlands' updated with a small campaign mode and other nice fixes
By , 16 April 2017 at 3:46 pm UTC

I have been interested in this. On their website you can buy the game which is something i have been wanting to do as it usually gives the developers/porters more cash and also starts to reduce my reliance on Steam to a small extent..

One question: It downloads as hearthlands_1_1_0.tag.gz which contains hearthlands.sh to launch the game. What happens when i launch this game and there is an update in a few months ? Do i have to re-download the game, or create a hearthlands account ? With steam it would use my steamaccount and auto update of course. Does the games .sh auto update ?

Plays beautifully with a controller.

As for the developers, I had a great experience trying to get my Steam controller working -turned out to be my controller, not their game, but that didn't stop one of the Devs pm'ng me on Discord to talk me through the log upload procedure and then help troubleshoot the issue. Great service!

That is really awesome to hear!

F2P has always damaged MMO's more so than any other genre in my opinion, due to the fact that a big part of the experience is creating a virtual world with virtual value. Even cosmetic items sold with real money seriously defeats much of the purpose of the game.

I know I haven't researched how exactly it will work in Albion yet, but this really gives me high hopes.

I can mostly relate to the Liam's experience. The story is kinda good though I haven't shed a single tear, it felt too cheesy and even a bit childish to me. It's hard for me to draw a line between this story and some school romantic comedy dramas from anime (which I'm addicted to), both can be naive and emotional at the same time but in different ways. Undertale's one just didn't click for me. Maybe because it's lacking detailed graphics (pixel art may be pretty detailed, this one isn't) or weird NES-like "speech" sounds instead of some voice acting. That's OK for a retro-looking game be retro in all aspects, however it's also fine to mix pixel art with modern voice acting and music. Also, very this:
QuoteYou see, I’m a bit of a hipster and when something slightly odd ends up being hyped all the way to heaven and back, I get really skeptical, generally for no good reason whatsoever.
When I see a hype around a mediocre-looking game I become suspicious and if that hype doesn't stop I may even start hating the subject. Because it's everywhere and I'm tired of it. So yeah, hype deals some damage for quite a lot of people, please don't hype things you deeply care about, dear reader, and thank you.

As for the actual "game" part, it's really lacking any fun, that's true. It's only there to create an artificial difficulty (i.e. so you have at least something to do aside from reading the story) so you'll have your 11 hours instead of 2 at most. Combat is also used to tell stories but it looks irritating for me when a monster tells you how it loves you (according to the story) and then tries to kill you with multiple vicious attacks. Even yanderes aren't that crazy! It doesn't make sense and feels stupid, not funny.

So "definite maybe" is sure the only right recommendation I can give it as well. Still, I completed it. That means that it wasn't totally boring and somehow can hook one up for a couple of evenings. Thanks for the review.

To me it will forever remain one of the most important stories in my life.

I feel sorry for the people who can't enjoy it.

Everyone has a different taste and it's fine to dislike what others enjoy, but I have the feeling that if you don't enjoy this one, you have to be missing something.

All in all, I understand Toby wanted to tell a tale and that's what he did... But it is not an excuse for absolutely broken and unsatisfactory game aspects.

Linear, unimaginative "dungeons", the whole game is just "gastrointestinal tract" -- twisted, yet one-way only. Simple "puzzles" you have to solve time and time again if you chose to re-play the game.

Non-functional RPG mechanics. I understand Toby Fox wanted to deconstruct the whole "grind" thing. It was not necessary to break the gameplay to tell the simple idea of pacifism. I mean, look at "Iji", the game tells the same story while remaining fun to play (in case of pacifist run -- dodge all those projectiles). And why Toby kept the one most annoying part: "Random Encounters"? Why punish players so much? Fun fact: the more protagonist kills, the less (s)he encounters monsters. So it is profitable to slaughter some monsters just for the sake of convenience!

Storytelling is meh... Most of the characters are bad: Papyrus? Annoying. Sans? Annoying x2. Also, thinks of himself too much. Undyne? Let me slaughter that bitch! Mettaton? See "Undyne". IMHO, most of the characters are outright repulsive.

And the game looks really cheap. Most NPCs are not animated. They are cardboard dummies staying in one place.

Owerall, for me it is hugely overrated "game" (if one can call it that). Not even close to something like "Cave Story" or "Iji".

But the music is awesome!

QuoteOne thing about the combat does bug me, which is where you and your enemy will end up practically on top of each other. They need to work on that a little, it's only minor, but still a little annoying.
Don't fix it! Let characters learn wrestling moves! ;)

Yeah, I really hated the actual "combat" stuff in there, and just couldn't get past it to finish the game. I grew to dread every one of those damned random encounters because it meant that I'd have to do yet more of those bullet hell minigames. Clearly I'm just not really in the target market for the game. I'm certainly glad it found its rather vocal niche, though - it's quite a unique game, whatever I felt about it.

Quoting: liamdaweNope. It will be a pay to play game at release.

Which is good thing, IMO. F2P games inevitably tend to put in-game paywalls at every corner, because they need to make money from something. And only way to ensure getting paid is to annoy the player to hell, until they reach for their credit cards (exhibit A: SWTOR). I have yet to see ONE F2P game with a fair business model.

I rather cough up cash up-front and don't get nickled and dimed later on, so B2P is the way to go for me.

That being said, in my experience the "optional" subscriptions tend to be a tad less "optional" than advertised. Usually it's a long list of indeed very optional XP bonuses, but there tend to be a few features hidden in said list that players -really- want to have and are sub-only. Like the famous ESO crafting bag you can't reasonably be a crafter without.
