Some thoughts on Albion Online with the final Beta
By Kimyrielle, 15 April 2017 at 3:22 pm UTC
Which is good thing, IMO. F2P games inevitably tend to put in-game paywalls at every corner, because they need to make money from something. And only way to ensure getting paid is to annoy the player to hell, until they reach for their credit cards (exhibit A: SWTOR). I have yet to see ONE F2P game with a fair business model.
I rather cough up cash up-front and don't get nickled and dimed later on, so B2P is the way to go for me.
That being said, in my experience the "optional" subscriptions tend to be a tad less "optional" than advertised. Usually it's a long list of indeed very optional XP bonuses, but there tend to be a few features hidden in said list that players -really- want to have and are sub-only. Like the famous ESO crafting bag you can't reasonably be a crafter without.

Do note that I work for GOG, just disclosing that in case you didn't know :)

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. Do you own it or have you otherwise played the final release? I don't like playing RPGs or ARPGs where the keyboard has to be used for movement and the mouse has to be used for camera control if one is not using a game pad. I don't want to waste money purchasing a game that I'll get frustrated & I won't play because I can't fully remap the controls the way I would like them.

Wine 2.6 released and it finally brings in the multi-threaded command stream for Direct3D

Good point! These bugs seems very similar. In Arma 2, ATOC can be disabled via game settings, but I usually play Arma with Gallium Nine, where it works without problems.

Quoting: sonicFor Arma2, in this Wine version the texture issue on AMD cards was fixed. With CSMD enabled, there were also fixed issues with postprocessing effects and partly shadow issues.
The ATOC and map graphical issues remains.

Quoting: ValamirCleaverI am very interested in this game, I like that it seems to be inspired by Rig Vedic Hinduism & the culture of the Indian subcontinent; but I am wary of purchasing it because one of the reviews I read seemed to imply that the game is optimized for a game pad controller. To anyone who owns this, is it possible to easily & fully remap the controls? By that I mean I prefer to play ARPGs (Diablo-clones) similar to default keyboard & mouse setup for Torchlight 1 & 2 or Neverwinter Nights 1.

Contraption Maker, a slight oldie but a great Linux game to check out if you like your puzzles

I didn't realize this came out in 2015; I picked it up in 2016 and thought it was new.
I used to love The Incredible Machine 3 and got Contraption Maker in a fit of nostalgia based on the fact that the same people worked on it, though my tastes in games have apparently moved on and I didn't have as much fun with it as I'd hoped. It's a good game, don't get me wrong, I guess I'm just not in the mood for solving puzzles as much anymore. I don't regret getting it, though, and I'll probably still work away at it slowly. :)

FYI, Wine developers just updated this page: https://wiki.winehq.org/Useful_Registry_Keys
| +->csmt
| | [DWORD Value (REG_DWORD): Enable (0x1) or disable (0x0, default) the multi-threaded
| | command stream feature. This serialises rendering commands from different threads into
| | a single rendering thread, in order to avoid the excessive glFlush()'es that would otherwise
| | be required for correct rendering. This deprecates the "StrictDrawOrdering" setting.
| | Introduced in wine-2.6.]

That's because this CSMT is only partial implementation, and doesn't address all performance improvements yet.

Looking at the steam reviews, there is another one that gives more info on the kerfuffle:
QuoteControvery
So Asura is having a bit of the controversial launch: there's one negative review that is calling out the developers on dishonest practices (leaving fake reviews). The developers, on the other hand, are saying that their Chinese publisher left the reviews and they've already asked him to leave that practice, apologizing for this behavior. Here's the reply from one of the developers:
"We are a two person team from India who have made the game and let me assure you that we would never ask anyone to review or promote the game in a misguided manner.
Now in this particulare case, we have a chinese publishing partner who is handling the chinese version of the game and it was one their members who did this.
We sincerly apologize on behalf of them."
Dispute
Nonetheless, the damage seems to be done: there's suspicion all around and all the positive reviews are looked at with doubt. Essentially, it also affects this review. To address this: I welcome the fact check and critical approach, so if you are wary of this review too - that's totally cool. I just don't think that we need another witch-hunt. That's only one man's impression: I'm going to evaluate the game by its qualities and describe why I think it is good. If you disagree - make sure to leave a comment and let's have a weighted discussion.

Speaking of games in this genre, Fantastic Contraptions lists Linux support, but I believe since SteamVR requires Vulkan right now, it probably won't work in the Vive until it supports Vulkan.
Anyone who hasn't played that in VR should, it's a blast. I think you can play it without that though...
There are only a few of these type of games, but they are a blast. Like Crayon Physics was one of the few games I played until the end on my tablet. I normally can't stand mobile games.

How exactly do you test if it's activated or not? With The Witcher 3 the result is visible in the main menu. Without CSMT it's messed up.

I downloaded the 2.6 packages, everything works fine but there is no sign of CSMT, I tried to activate it with the registry key shmerl mentioned and didn't have any effect.

Quoting: SalvatosI loved Incredible Toon Machine as a kid, but I'm a little sad the cat and mouse aren't in this edition. Their animations and sounds made a good part of the game's fun. Normally I'd be wary of buying this out of nostalgia, but one buck for two copies is kind of a no-brainer considering I can make that money back selling a few Steam trading cards. There is a cat and mouse in the game, they are featured in the tutorial too.
