An interview with Beamdog about Linux gaming, they say it’s worth it

I've played a little so far. I'd agree with the nostalgia glasses. Some of the nostalgia is great. But some is not. In particular the voices. Man are they annoying after a few minutes of playing.
Also, I prefer the Banjo IP. I wish they'd just bought back the rights from Microsoft...

The next big update for Minecraft is in development and will feature Parrots
By Larian, 13 April 2017 at 12:37 am UTC
Of course, this isn't all sunshine and roses. Minecraft will go away one day. I don't know when, but I do believe I know how. Eventually the ROI on maintaining the game will dwindle to the point that it is no longer reasonable or profitable to maintain it. Interest will wane, and new subscribers won't be able to keep the game afloat financially. On that day, whoever owns the Minecraft IP will either try to sell it off or just pull the plug. Long live Minecraft.
TL;DR - I don't think they're crazy enough to mess with Minecraft in a way that hurts Linux users because it would hurt everyone else too. At least not while the IP is still so lucrative.

Quoting: razing32If people keep playing on Winblows and Android , they endanger nothing. (pricks)I don't know... to peel Minecraft away from Linux would require that they kill the Java dependency. A way to do that would be to rewrite the code in some other language that doesn't support our OS (such as C#). The only problem with this is they'd be setting the community on fire when they did so. All the mods and various bolt-on enhancements would just stop working, and that would essentially kill the game that they paid Notch so much money for. I believe that community is what keeps Minecraft relevant. That community following, or rather the lack of it, is also why other clones of it aren't as successful.

Quoting: M@yeulCThis won't solve the problem, though. I guess Valve didn't update the .deb on their website with the latest version.
This comes from the fact that the Open source drivers are compiled against a newer version of the libraries present in the runtime.
Try to launch it with:
STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
Then, update steam (opt into beta branch if necessary, I've been staying there for more than three years :P).
worked perfectly thankyou.

Speaking about badges, I have been thinking about implementing some groups in the GOL website (I haven't looked at the code yet). One could imagine a group per studio, within a "Game dev" group, or something similar. The idea being to add a tooltip to the badge, indicating what game the dev is working on. And maybe a nice place for a studio showcase (Feral: who we are, or similar). Would you be open to such a thing, Liam?

Of those games listed, only 4 I'm missing. =P
Yes, I picked up DiRT Rally in the Humble Monthly Subscription. Hoping that INSIDE might make its way to Linux (eventually). I was another one where I wasn't keen enough on DiRT Rally to pay full price. But at the Subscription price: "Yeah, why not!"
Also I recently picked up "7 Days To Die" on Humble Store (and used my Subscription 10% extra discount). I've been playing 7DTD and quite enjoying it. Full price: £18.99 Humble current price: £7.59 10% extra off: £6.83
And the link: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/7-days-to-die
Picked up GoNNER on Humble Store as well, same 10% extra Subscription discount: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/gonner-press-jump-to-die-edition
Those titles are all still on sale (at time of posting).

Well had a chance to play this for an hour today.. correction, my 6yo daughter did, she would not let me have the controller (except when it was tricky)
Once the libudev tweak is done the game launches just fine with a controller. The game was nice and smooth via steam link and no need to configure the controller.
The game is a nice open-ish world platform game with mini puzzles (got beaten in some damn race).
I haven't tried the arcade section yet.
It's a nice fun platformer and seems good for kids or general time wasting

That's cool actually.
Math , physics and IT were my favorite subjects when i was in high-school. Sucked at chemistry though , but I blame that on a teacher who simply did not give a shit and sold us marked up manuals we barely used.
Not sure how IB levels worked , but seems to be a US thing.
In my country used to work (not sure now) like this :
7-11 First 4 years - primary school
11-14 Second 4 years - secondary school / gymnasium
14-18 High school - 4 years
18-21/22 Bachelor
+2 for Master's Degree
+X for Doctorate (no clue since i stopped caring at Bachelor level)

Sometimes chemistry, though for pupils at the IB level I have the luxury to pass that on to a more capable colleague.
You peaked my curiosity :)
I also help younger pupils (from age 12), but then subjects are more of a mixed bag. That part is also more about pedagogy than working with exam-level-pupils.

By pete910, 12 April 2017 at 6:42 pm UTC
Take his benches with a bucket of salt, Why on earth he cant just use the actual score that the bench produces is beyond me.
1080's are averaging 4500 in windows. mine is 3225, so like I said, not even close.
Need to see the score as to determine how Phoronix and everybody elses stacks up, Showing the average is only part of the benchmark final score

Windows 10 DirextX (1080ti - Extreme setting - 46 FPS):

Linux OpenGL: (1080ti - Extreme setting - 44.5 FPS)

Quoting: AskQuestionsLaterQuoting: M@yeulCSpeaking of Minetest, is it usable as a full game, including the survival aspect of it? I've seen projects like Voxelands or Minefix that try to achieve this, so I was under the impression that is was not (plus, last time I played it, there wasn't much to do).
Base minetest (without the mods) is a fairly quiet place without much life. However, mods are trivially easy to add and there are many extremely good ones, including modpacks that provide a quick starter on adding to the base build.
I have both minetest and minecraft servers running at home, and my children (7 and 9 years old) still play on both servers. Generally I'd say that the animation and polish in minecraft is better, but the ease of modding and variety available in minetest provides a highly interesting world.

I got Dirt Rally from Humble Bundle. Was pleasantly surprised about how well optimized it is. You can really turn down the graphics, even to the point of replacing objects with sprites. I managed to run it on my modest Quadro K1100M at 1600x900 on medium settings at 30-35 FPS. Can go up to 60 FPS if I really don't care about the looks.
That's not amazing, I know. But for somebody who never owned a proper gaming machine, this is perfectly playable. In comparison I can only get around 20 FPS from Mankind Divided at 800x600 and all options on lowest.
