Yooka-Laylee released with day-1 Linux support, some quick initial thoughts

Quoting: eldersnakeWhat a gorgeous and fun little game!

Maybe it seems sad, but the kid in me is pretty delighted with this. Lol.

It's not just the kid in me. The adult in me likes to unwind, and games that aren't about 'preventing the end of the world and the destruction of all that is good' are a welcome addition there. So this one's definitely on my radar.

Sadly they do not support Vulkan, would really like to see a good Vulkan Benchmark for Linux.

Just ran it yesterday evening on 1080p extreme preset. My machine got only 1100-somthing score, whereas HexDSLs machine (nearly exact same hardware, same gpu, same driver) got over 1500. Only difference so far was, he uses Antergos and I still use Ubuntu 16.04. So maybe this was another coffin nail for Ubuntu.

AMDGPU-PRO 17.10 driver released
By tuubi, 12 April 2017 at 8:35 am UTC

Adding all the driver/mesa PPAs at the same time doesn't seem like a safe thing to do. If you did this anyway, you should use ppa-purge to remove all but one of them. I recommend leaving either the ubuntu-x-swat one or padoka's stable PPA.

Feral have patched the Vulkan Beta of Mad Max again, another look at performance with benchmarks

Quoting: catskinsoxI have a Pascal card, and it still crashes on the 381 drivers. I have gone back to the 378 drivers again.

Do other Vulkan games work for you on 381? I have a 1080 and I can't run SteamVR, Mad Max or Serious Sam Fusion for longer than 5 minutes on the 381 series. It seems to be just broken across all games and not game specific.

I'm really not sure how that got past Nvidia QA...

It's working well for me with Mesa 17-git, AMD 380X GPU. Also my XBox 360 controller works just fine too, though I do use the steam-xpad module (installed from AUR on Arch) instead of the default one, if that makes any difference.

Cosmic Star Heroine, yet another Kickstarted game to delay Linux support
By hardpenguin, 12 April 2017 at 7:37 am UTC Likes: 3

Quoting: LeopardI can understand delays on titles like 'Inner Chains' ; but delay on 2d indie games like this is just unacceptable.
Inner Chains is being made by a small (8-12 people according to their Kickstarter) indie studio in Warsaw, and announced for two platforms: Windows and PS4 (plus VR support).

Cosmic Star Heroine is being made by 3-4 people, and releasing simultaneously on four platforms: Windows, Mac, PSVita and Playstation 4.

How is that different to you? Do you seriously think that 2D games don't need much work?

Now as much as I don't enjoy having Linux releases delayed, how do you think, does that make more sense for them to focus more on the most profitable platforms (with 2 of them having biggest share in the video games market), or to start their focus with the single least profitable platform first?

I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or unrelated, but since I upgraded to Mint 18 with KDE Plasma 5 earlier this year 3d games are unplayable for me, including HM Spiffing, Cradle and this one. No matter whether I play with integrated graphics or Nvidia, the games just crawl to a near halt after seconds of playing, so I figure it might be CPU related. I haven't played much at all this year though, so it's not a big deal, but I'd been looking forward to playing this one (I'm a backer). I had zero issues with the Toybox, but that was before the upgrade. Granted, my laptop is getting very old now too, so maybe I just need a new one.

This isn't the first Linux version of the game. GOG had a Wine-wrapped version of the original for ages. It worked perfectly for me and was kept up to date as Ubuntu updates caused breakages. Sadly, it has been withdrawn from sale and I suspect it will have had its last update.

Canonical drop the Unity desktop environment for Ubuntu favour of going back to GNOME
By Andrei B., 12 April 2017 at 6:59 am UTC

I'm suprised and glad that Cannonical is dropping Unity.
I've always considered Unity in beta, even after final releases. It was always buggy.
Also, the information that if offered was not of interest to me.

If Cannonical want to swing Ubuntu back in the game they should start polishing more the release and ask in the forums what people really want from the OS, and do it. It's so simple I really don't understand why nobody does it.

Quoting: lucifertdarkWell they obviously haven't seen what Feral & Croteam are up to with Vulkan.

To be fair, they haven't. Well, nowadays they might have, but that tweet was made half a year ago, back when Croteam was still facing Vulkan driver issues with The Talos Principle and long before the Mad Max update happened.
That said, I'm pretty sure Doom had Vulkan support patched in sometime before the tweet, and that worked out rather well...

Open source game engine for Morrowind 'OpenMW' to gain 'Distant terrain' in the next release

Quoting: ssj17vegetaOh. My. God. Absolutely can't wait !! :D

You can try it already if you build OpenMW from source ;) - it's not that hard and the build is reasonably fast (~2 minutes here (i7-4790) and ~4/5 minutes on the laptop (thinkpad x260, i5-6200U))

screenshot: link - some mods used
How to build OpenMW: openmw wiki
How to use distant terrain: openmw post about distant terrain - be sure to set the view distance at 66666.0, runs smooth on the x260 (intel GPU), or if you can, 666666.0 (smooth here on the i7 + gtx960)

Enjoy ;) - oh, and almost every quest works, so you can really finish the game, which I did some monthes ago

Inner Chains, yet another Kickstarted title to delay Linux support
By dubigrasu, 12 April 2017 at 5:04 am UTC Likes: 1

Certainly that would be a slow process to fix issues, but unfortunately judging from devs comments on Steam forums they just export for Linux from the Windows editor and call it a day if it doesn't work this way.
More often I see the simple OpenGL build (for Windows) being the first roadblock where they give up.

Hollow Knight will officially launch on Linux tomorrow
By no_information_here, 12 April 2017 at 4:34 am UTC Likes: 2

I have put over 30 hours into the linux beta (1.0.2.8 currently). Working very smoothly for me on an Nvidia card. Some windows users have complained about slight lagging. I have seen no Linux problems that way!

The only bug is that achievements still aren't triggering on Steam. It seems to be a common story for Linux ports at first. The game has an internal page that seems to be tracking (most of) the achievements, so hopefully they will catch up eventually.

Really great game. I would say it is right up there with Axiom Verge and Salt & Sanctuary. Huge and well-crafted Metroidvania with a touch of dark-souls style. Very highly recommended!

Quoting: syxbitI kickstarted this. I originally paid for a Steam key, but then switched for a PS4 key. Mostly because Unity has a bad reputation on Linux, because I figured this sort of game was best played on a console/TV, and because I prefer my PS4 controller over my Steam controller.
I'm starting to regret my decision. Maybe I'll pick it up for cheap in a future Humble Bundle.
What is wrong about playing with the PS4 Controller on PC with Steam and Linux? This game might have some issues with that on launch day but generally spoken that works very well. My PC is connected to two screens and to the TV which I use for Controller games.

You have to remember this Kickstarter was 2 years ago. I don't think the ps4 controller worked well with Steam Linux back then.

Sure and that's why I write this now and not when it's final. For now most reports only state how fast the Vulkan renderer is, but not that there are also still FPS drops. This is even more important than reports of high FPS, IMHO.

BTW, I don't have this drops in the Benchmark, which makes it even more important to report this.

Feral have patched the Vulkan Beta of Mad Max again, another look at performance with benchmarks
By Mountain Man, 12 April 2017 at 1:34 am UTC

Quoting: EgonautWhile the performance is much better with the Vulkan renderer, it's still heavily single core bound. I have around 100-140 FPS in the actual game (Ultra @1080p) but when I'm driving around the FPS drops very often below 60 FPS. When the FPS drops, always one core is at 100% load and GPU load goes down.

I don't expect any magical fix for this, since it's still a port and there will be always down sides. But instead of trying to get the max FPS more upwards, maybe Feral could try to get the load more balanced on threads, if possible. If I could have stable 60 FPS I would be more happy as with 100+FPS and drops below 60 :)
Well, it is still beta, so I suspect there's more optimization to come.

Quoting: HihiDanniThe controller issues sound weird.

Come to think of it, my DualShock 4 no longer seems to be reliably picked up by Rocket League, and Steam might have something to do with it. They introduced official DualShock 4 support in an update which seems to have disabled the generic joystick support by default. If I enable DualShock 4 support and connect my controller Steam outright crashes. So I have to use the generic support for now, which seems buggy for some reason?
Well at least I know now that Steam controller works. Tried it a few minutes ago and it just worked. (I am not using the SC driver. Only through Steams setup). It's sad to see only it works, out of the three controllers I have. =/

The PS, Xbox, and generic configuration settings enabled in big picture mode have always gave me problems. In fact I have the same issue you have with Rocket League if I have any of those enabled. R-L just will not find my controller with those enabled, but turning them off and my PS3 or 360 controller just works with no issues.

Quoting: UnholyVisionI have a i7-5820k & using a GTX 970. None the less I am running fine. Upon first launch Vsync was turned on so 60 cap. I turned that off in the setting menu and I am pushing 200+ fps. Depending on the area I sometimes jump to 300+ and others I go down to no lower than 120.

That sounds pretty good. I can probably divide that number by 2 to get an approximation (CPU is from 2010).

Good thing to know Septerra Core works in wine, I still have my original CD and T-Shirt. And it was the first game to have my name in the credits! (I was running a website dedicated to the game back then) Great game, but its slow, the battles last forever with very slow and long animations. It could really use a speed up key like you get on console emulators.
