The Signal From Tölva, the new open-world FPS from Big Robot may still come to Linux
By fabertawe, 11 April 2017 at 9:29 am UTC

Quoting: MadeanaccounttocommentSo if the game engine miraculously starts working with minimal involvement and the planets line up just right they may think about releasing it with the conditions that should it ever break in an update they won't be particularly bothered to fix it?

It's honestly what I get from the wording but at least the developers show some interest which is better than none.

I totally get where you're coming from there. The only thing I would say in Big Robot's favour is their Linux support of 'Sir, You Are Being Hunted' was absolutely first class. It's one of my favourite games ever and I played it from the first alpha right through to release and I can honestly say I didn't have a single issue (that I remember now anyway!) and it was totally on par with the Windows version all through development.

I think it may have been the first game I Kickstarted and unfortunately being so good it gave me a skewed view of this. After a few others, where I got burned, I soon came to my senses regarding crowdfunding ;)

Oh nice, thanks! I don't think I've ever heard of that one before.
Haven Moon looks gorgious (did I spell that right?), but is rather on the short side. I do hope the developer continues the engine with more content.
I have played quern a few months ago (it was already out for linux on steam), and I think quern has a bigger story, also looks great, but due to lack of time I had to pause it. (Not sure if that was EA, I think not, so I am a bit surprised with the article :-) ).
You need a pen and paper to write down the hints though.

What other Mech game is there for Linux?

I played and quite liked Hawken back in my Windows days, I wouldn't mind having something like that.

I would really like to have this game on Linux. It looks fantastic (the surreal graphic style is awesome) and the gameplay seems to be very cool according to most testers. Hook me up when they release a Tux version.

Unfurtunately there is no way you can see in the Steam store wether a game is using DRM, I believe Valve do this intentionally. Asking in the forums seems to be the best way to find out.

Feral Interactive have released a new teaser for a Linux & Mac port to come

The phrase "Made to Wade" appears in the following song Crass - Major General Despair "The generals and politicians who advocate war should be made to wade in the truth of it" which could relate to NieR:Automata.

There is something else that suggests it could be NieR:Automata. Feral generally adds two depots domesticated_internal & domesticated_merge, NieR has two development branches 483qtryh438w & jkfes9uqt43ql that were created after the Steam Release

OpenMW is awesome; there's no denying it. I just wish other, similar, projects got more attention. Fallterguist, OpenTomb, and even long-lived projects like GemRB and Exult could use a little more love from the community.

If you're pairing it with built in Intel or AMD graphics you should be able to do without DC and use PRIME to offload the graphics rendering to the dGPU, it works rather well on my laptop since fencing was added (i.e. no tearing)

Quoting: PixelPiOkay, I think I've come a step further. Now it becomes linguistic. Look at this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplified_Wade

Simplified Wade. MADE TO WADE. This could mean that we should transliterate the Mandarin symbol for tea to roman characters. MADE TO (get transliterate with simplified) WADE.

茶 = cha

Right?

Any ideas about cha and games? :/

I dunno about the cha link, but maybe the "Made to Wade" goes the other way - possibly the idea is to convert the phrase 'made to' into Chinese.

Online converters suggest that it might transliterate from Wade-Giles to pinyin as 'ma duo', and throwing that into a pinyin->chinese converter gives me this stuff

码垛 (碼垛)mǎ duò
[stack] 把物品整齐地堆叠好
刚刚把米袋码垛好,雨就落下来了

Since I'm not in the 1/4 of the Earth's population for which this is actually meaningful, I pass it through Google Translate to get:

Stacking (stacking) mǎ duò
Stack up the items neatly
Just put the rice bag stack and the rain came down

Aha! 'Stacking' is a rather fine game by Double Fine Software, but it already has a Linux version, so it can't be that. But if you've seen the state of Double Fine's games roster these days, you'll know that they're all about reboots, remasters, reissues and sequels. So it still fits. The clue obviously refers to a Feral Interactive Day 1 Linux/Mac port of Stacking 2, or, more likely Stacking: Director's Cut Remastered HD GOTY Edition.

You heard it here first.

Some thoughts on Ziggurat
By ShabbyX, 10 April 2017 at 10:40 pm UTC Likes: 1

I played Ziggurat a lot, despite myself. With the new characters that get unlocked every time or other you finish the game, a new level of challenge is added to the game which keeps the game interesting for a lot longer than I would have expected. Also, the random level-up "cards" can change each playthrough a lot, sometimes making it much harder by denying you some upgrade you usually depend on.

The one thing I would love to see from this type of game; is a first release that uses the proc-gen for level gen, and then an add-on/2nd release that includes handcrafted levels.

That, would make my day.

Quoting: M@yeulCYes, I wouldn't call this game "closed room", this is more likely due to its Rogue like nature.
The point I was making is that the combat is more Painkiller than it is Quake, wherein you enter a combat stage, the door slams shut behind you, and you must contend with whatever is thrown at you using only the tools you have at your disposal at the time, other than what is given to you from item drops.

Quoting: ziabiceThe only thing that keeps me away from Ziggurat is his roguelike nature: I really loved Doom for his level design. The levels are fantastic, and even after years I can still remember nearly all of them and enjoy the game.
Agreed, and more crafted levels are one of the things I did miss when I played Ziggurat, but as I said in the article the game's personality was still enough for me to be able to carry on without it. I do still long for a solid FPS campaign in an Indie title though.

Inner Chains, yet another Kickstarted title to delay Linux support
By MintedGamer, 10 April 2017 at 9:47 pm UTC

I agree with others, Kickstarter is not a pre-order system, its a funding system and has inherent risks of the loss of your investment. I learned the hard way that Kickstarter makes no guarantees whatsoever for the money that you pledge, they will just leave to contact the project owners and if you have issues with contacting them, they wont help you out.

Only offer a pledge if the developer has a good track record, and even then don't assume you will get anything on time, or at all.

OpenMW doesn't necessarily need to be forked to support Oblivion or Skyrim, have a look at OpenMW in action here:
Oblivion assets with ragdoll physics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AfYltej0qI
Oblivion walk about town: https://youtu.be/U58gC1EAtMI?t=65
Skyrim Bleak Falls Barrow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCbiJsasdcU

Once OpenMW 1.0 is released, work will be spent in de-hardcoding, meaning that we'll be making OpenMW more game neutral and back to its roots as an "OpenEngine".

This is doubly true since we're also working on our own ExampleSuite (playable game) to help show off OpenMW in its own right, free of Bethesda IP. All work is currently under CC-BY-SA license with a bare-bone Template that people can use to make their own games or addons (mods). This is all done with our OpenMW-CS, a FOSS construction-set which is arguably the hidden gem of OpenMW.

Sooo.... if you're a developer (C++) or an artist (modeling and textures) and would like to help with some aspect of the OpenMW project, we're more than happy to get you up to speed. :)

With the symbol meaning tea a couple things come to mind. Along with what others have mentioned. Shadow warrior 2 has a side mission called monster tea party. Also a stretch but if you do a search for "tea made to wade" results will show red rose tea company that also offered figurines made by wade. Although neither appear in street fighter v (yet) you have rose as a character and also you have Dudley who has red roses and drinks tea. That may be looking too much into it haha

Naw, Morrowind was great for its time. It was indeed daunting. Enchanting something? Pffff. Good luck. There are cheese-tacular ways to bump your enchanting skill to 500 with the Tribunal expansion, but good luck using the skill as intended. You will burn thru a lot of hard to come by soul gems to no avail. I love the game to bits, but the attack system blows chunks compared to later Elder Scrolls games. But the spells! All the tasty spells EVAR!!!!! Levitation, Mark and Recall, teleportation around the forts of the island. It was wonderful. Everyone loves Skyrim, but I hated it for its lack of spell selection. I was mad enough at Oblivion for taking away levitation and mark and recall.

By 1xok, 10 April 2017 at 8:05 pm UTC

Okay guys, let's get some more structured. :)

As I see it, Feral has so far ported games from the following developer studios (publishers):

Codemasters
Creative Assembly (SEGA)
Relic Entertainment (SEGA)
Eidos Montreal (Square Enix)
Dontnod Entertainment (Square Enix)
Crystal Dynamics (Square Enix)
Avalanche Studios (Warner Bros.)
Monolith Productions (Warner Bros.)
Relic Entertainment (THQ)
Firaxis Games (2K Games)

If I look into this list and remember the already ported games, then I notice first that Tomb Raider 2016 still pending. However, I also feel Nier: Automata is realistic. Square Enix is the only publisher that has already released games from three different developers. Insofar as the porting is not too expensive, both games would make economic absolute sense. The games are top sellers and even with only 0.8% of the steam marked Feral could sell a lot of copies. I think such a port is worth it.

But the Chinese symbol for tea and "made for wade"? What the heck? How this could belong to Tomb Raider or Nier: Automata?

Am I missing something?

EDIT: Please don't consider games which are already ported to Mac. So it can't be Total War: Shogun 2. Sorry. ;)

The only thing that keeps me away from Ziggurat is his roguelike nature: I really loved Doom for his level design. The levels are fantastic, and even after years I can still remember nearly all of them and enjoy the game.
With roguelikes with random levels all that magic is lost. It's not about replayability: I replayed all of the Doom (Heretic, Hexen, Quake, etc...) games over the years and not feel bored at all, because the frantic gameplay plus the level design made the magic.
Ziggurat (and nearly all of the roguelike-type games) slip usually into the forgettable gameplay and you'll never try the "now this will happen, let me be prepared" sensation that the classic FPS can give you.

First-person puzzler 'Quern - Undying Thoughts' now available on GOG with a Linux build, some thoughts
By faceless, 10 April 2017 at 7:44 pm UTC

I've already finished the game on Linux, and I certainly recommended it, as I really enjoyed the game. Was also expecting a review on GoL ;)
As stated in the previous post and in the article it's a pretty good puzzle game, with logical solutions in the vein of Myst with an interesting background story.
The environment is beautiful and it was a joy to spend my time in the realm of Quern. I congratulate the small development team of Zadbox, they did an amazing job.
However, I wish the game was better optimized for linux. With settings on high/medium and 720p resolution the framerates were inconsistent and sometimes low (around 20 fps), other times higher (reaching 60 fps), but certainly playable. In addition, the game crashed for me about 3 times. My specs are: linux mint 18.1, i7 3770k, nvidia gtx 670 (proprietary drivers), 16gb of ram.
Nonetheless, it is great to have such a game on Linux.
Cheers!
