Feral Interactive have released a new teaser for a Linux & Mac port to come
By 1xok, 10 April 2017 at 8:05 pm UTC

Okay guys, let's get some more structured. :)

As I see it, Feral has so far ported games from the following developer studios (publishers):

Codemasters
Creative Assembly (SEGA)
Relic Entertainment (SEGA)
Eidos Montreal (Square Enix)
Dontnod Entertainment (Square Enix)
Crystal Dynamics (Square Enix)
Avalanche Studios (Warner Bros.)
Monolith Productions (Warner Bros.)
Relic Entertainment (THQ)
Firaxis Games (2K Games)

If I look into this list and remember the already ported games, then I notice first that Tomb Raider 2016 still pending. However, I also feel Nier: Automata is realistic. Square Enix is the only publisher that has already released games from three different developers. Insofar as the porting is not too expensive, both games would make economic absolute sense. The games are top sellers and even with only 0.8% of the steam marked Feral could sell a lot of copies. I think such a port is worth it.

But the Chinese symbol for tea and "made for wade"? What the heck? How this could belong to Tomb Raider or Nier: Automata?

Am I missing something?

EDIT: Please don't consider games which are already ported to Mac. So it can't be Total War: Shogun 2. Sorry. ;)

Some thoughts on Ziggurat
By ziabice, 10 April 2017 at 7:55 pm UTC Likes: 3

The only thing that keeps me away from Ziggurat is his roguelike nature: I really loved Doom for his level design. The levels are fantastic, and even after years I can still remember nearly all of them and enjoy the game.
With roguelikes with random levels all that magic is lost. It's not about replayability: I replayed all of the Doom (Heretic, Hexen, Quake, etc...) games over the years and not feel bored at all, because the frantic gameplay plus the level design made the magic.
Ziggurat (and nearly all of the roguelike-type games) slip usually into the forgettable gameplay and you'll never try the "now this will happen, let me be prepared" sensation that the classic FPS can give you.

First-person puzzler 'Quern - Undying Thoughts' now available on GOG with a Linux build, some thoughts
By faceless, 10 April 2017 at 7:44 pm UTC

I've already finished the game on Linux, and I certainly recommended it, as I really enjoyed the game. Was also expecting a review on GoL ;)
As stated in the previous post and in the article it's a pretty good puzzle game, with logical solutions in the vein of Myst with an interesting background story.
The environment is beautiful and it was a joy to spend my time in the realm of Quern. I congratulate the small development team of Zadbox, they did an amazing job.
However, I wish the game was better optimized for linux. With settings on high/medium and 720p resolution the framerates were inconsistent and sometimes low (around 20 fps), other times higher (reaching 60 fps), but certainly playable. In addition, the game crashed for me about 3 times. My specs are: linux mint 18.1, i7 3770k, nvidia gtx 670 (proprietary drivers), 16gb of ram.
Nonetheless, it is great to have such a game on Linux.
Cheers!

I can confirm that you can complete main campaign, Tribunal, Bloodmoon and a lot of side quests without any problems. I didn't notice any problems with any quest I played (I finished a lot of them, I have a highest rank in a lot of fractions). For me OpenMW is even better than an original version, because is much more stable and what is the most important for me in this case... has native support for Linux :P

Quoting: dmantione
Quoting: rafebelmontThat is good to read. I didn't know this, i will be sure to try this way when I get Morrowind since I prefer to buy DRM-free Windows only games.

FYI: It is DRM free on Steam as well. You can install it then on Linux with steamcmd.

Buy it on sale at the cheapest place you can find, no need to reward Bethessa for not supporting Linux.

Thanks for that. Is there a way to see if a game on Steam is DRM-free? I usually only buy games on sale these days, you see, I would buy more often for the full price (not Bethesda games anyway), but having a baby at home with a low budget does not allow it :)

Need more Serious Sam? Serious Sam's Bogus Detour arrives this summer
By Cyril, 10 April 2017 at 5:51 pm UTC

QuoteIt's due sometime this summer, with no clearer date set yet. While they have a Steam page set up for it, they also plan a GOG release too.

I'm afraid that it will be the same thing as "always"... Like a dev release a "little" game on GOG but not their big one(s)...
I really want to have wrong.
And if a dev doesn't talk about it, it's pretty clear for me, like some don't talk about linux versions.

Hammerwatch is a nice game, so it should be the same for this one.

People claim Morrowind is a better game than its successors, however I'd say it depends on what you're looking for in a game.

The combat system doesn't really work with the to-hit being a percentile roll calculated when your attack connects. That is combining the mechanics of a hack 'n slash game with the mechanics of a die-based RPG in the player's disadvantage.

There's articles on the web which go into greater detail, suffice it to say people have opinions.

Inner Chains, yet another Kickstarted title to delay Linux support
By Liam Dawe, 10 April 2017 at 4:36 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: chepatiSo, yes, while kickstarter projects are a risky proposition, we should not shun the platform outright. There are some good, responsible developers, who get the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressure of having to get approved by publishers, who are by nature risk-averse and prefer sequels of successful franchises to interesting, but perhaps not so marketable ideas.
Fully agree here, I will support certain Kickstarters if the conditions are right :)

Quoting: nmeTaking that in consideration, note that $5K does not pay for a whole lot of development time.
While I agree of course, they set the price for it, not us.

No matter what, I don't think developers on Kickstarter should get a free pass when it comes to not delivering. We will continue to note on GOL when developers don't deliver for numerous reasons. The most important being: to help people decide who to support in future.

Quoting: QuenestilNot to forgive the developers, but I've been using the Unreal Engine for a while now on Linux and they don't make it that easy to develop on the platform.

To install you have to use the Source, no binary available. No launcher and although 4.16 is quite good, in previous version there were bugs constantly crashing the Editor. Imagine the pain of someone that never worked on Linux before.
Wait, are they trying to develop on Linux, why?

Canonical drop the Unity desktop environment for Ubuntu favour of going back to GNOME
By Kuduzkehpan, 10 April 2017 at 4:26 pm UTC

unity is the thing which made me turn back to linux os. its simple but keyboard oriented. (HUD DASH you have to use keyboard)
convergence idea still good thing to make things universal and clever and easy to learn adopt. imagine one universal interface for all kind of smart devices. but this needs little bit monopoly over smart device vendors and software industry so let it stay as a dream.
now ok come back to real life. ofc its sad news. made me think about to install windows cuz without unity it seems all rest of DE is old fashion and just a diversion. Then i installed gnome-shell 3.22 and what a mess is that. Then i found some extensions. now its shiny elegant more integrated than any other DE. and its new fashion. and has good community support. also Gnome-shell really faster than Unity7. only unity-2d (which is stopped) can be competitive to gnome-shell in the name of speed.
now i like gnome-shell more than any other DE.
Ubuntu's unity drop is kind of come back in the loosing game. And cannonical will make ubuntu gnome much more better state ever seen. more extensions more stability and bleeding edge softwares updates for ubuntu. no waste of resources on re-inventing somethings.
and about MS and partnership MS is almost 3rd open source contributor and supporter. unless there is no monopoly ideas all helps are welcomes and "freedom" for everyone.

now my current desktop is ubuntu 17.04 and de is Gnome-shell 3.22

Man O' War: Corsair, the Warhammer naval battler has a release date
By Joeyboots80, 10 April 2017 at 4:20 pm UTC Likes: 1

I have been playing this for the past couple of weeks and man o man do I love it! When I saw their was a naval sim set in the Warhammer universe I was like: "Yes please sir!" And I bought it immediately the day the Linux port was added.

This game is great and has potential to be even greater, especially if they refine the aforementioned ship boarding combat. A little more nuance to the ship to ship combat would be nice too. Overall, I like it a whole lot and I hope it is successful in the marketplace and maybe even spawns a franchise.

Yes, the game support both Windows 7 and 8.1.
For the Linux, the support won't be available at the release. Might be added in the future.

So along with the insightful statement above (kickstarter funding is not a pre-order) I would like to offer that when you use Kickstarter you become a stakeholder in the development process. As a side-effect, you are much closer to the business end of things. Taking that in consideration, note that $5K does not pay for a whole lot of development time.

In fact, if we rate an hour of development at $50 (which is really low, considering taxes and costs) the devs gave themselves a whopping 100 hours of development time to complete a Linux port. It follows that on-launch linux support was indeed a stretch (pun intended). As an "investor" you have to understand this basic business logic. On the other hand, on the developers end we can often see the classic entrepreneurial error of exagerating performance/profits and underestimating development time/costs.

Anyway, all of this to say that overruns or underdelivery are part of the entrepreneurial process and therefore part of the Kickstart experience for investors (even if they would rather see themselves as end-users).

I'm still eagerly waiting (and hoping) for Obduction on Linux, but it seems they're still focused on VR at this point.

Quoting: chepatiIf memory serves me, I have backed 13 projects, of which 7 have delivered. Some of them with considerable delays (a year to two years).
In case of memory troubles, this link can help! :D
Quoting: chepatiSo I have a return-on-investment of more than 50% which is not too bad.
A good success rate indeed! (Not a pun) I personally expect somewhere near this number (I'm currently on 14/29, some projects still ongoing).
Quoting: chepatiHaving said that, I *always* support any project by King Art Games, if they promise a linux port, which they so far have always done. Not only do they always, and I mean ALWAYS, stick to their promises, but they always, and I stress ALWAYS, deliver on time. Must have something to do with the well-known German work ethics. I take their word at face value and they have never disappointed me.
There are a few proven developers, yes. But "KING Art Games" is an exception even among them. Currently, it is the only company to deliver on time. The exact same day as was promised!
I wish more people could understand this... Kickstarter is not pre-order system. One should not go there if (s)he is not willing to part with the money for (potentially) nothing at all.

Quoting: TcheyAre they real puzzles, or try and repeat puzzles ? I mean, a quick example i have in mind : a piano with 20 keys, find the correct 8 keys and in order, to open the door, is try and repeat. If there are clues to find the keys immediately if you think well, then it's real puzzles. In my opinion.
There are always clues, nothing in the game is based on guess work.
