AMDGPU-PRO 17.10 driver released
By MayeulC, 8 April 2017 at 9:27 am UTC
Quick note: You can also install the AMDGPU-PRO OpenCL part, and still use the open drivers for OpenGL :)
For arch: install opencl-amd from AUR (source.

Well, it allows you to use your GPU as compute device for Cycles in Blender, for example. Or use filmic-blender. =)
But open driver is better for gaming in my case. =) Dirt Showdown, Hitman, Serious Sam and Mad Max work more smoothly with it.

Only consider using Nvidia's installer if you actually have problems with the PPA packages.
sudo lightdm service stop
cd to the driver
./NVidia*
update driver click yes
sudo reboot

Canonical drop the Unity desktop environment for Ubuntu favour of going back to GNOME
By Purple Library Guy, 8 April 2017 at 7:33 am UTC
Really, ALL? So let's see, here I am using Mate, and I guess that thing on the right hand edge of my screen can't be a taskbar with a bunch of launchers on it because apparently ALL the Linux DEs other than Unity don't do that.
By Purple Library Guy, 8 April 2017 at 7:33 am UTC
Quoting: GrimfistBecause there is one thing that Unity 7 did absolutly right compared to ALL other Linux DE's out there, in times where 16:9 widescreens are the norm, vertical screen space is very precious compared to horizontal screen space. Having a monstrous launcher bar at the bottom is just bad UX design when you can have it at the left side of the screen, preserving precious vertical screen space and using the available but only 80% or so used horizontal screen space. And delivering such a good out of the box experience is what drives Ubuntu.

As I said in my first post, it's an unverifiable black market transaction because of the media industry. G2A didn't make it that way, it was already like that. Buyer beware of you get a stolen one that gets disabled. That said I've never had a key go bad. By the way the requests gearbox made would give them exactly the tools they need to make 100% of the keys on g2a invalid.
You can't negotiate with content providers (lumping gaming companies in here even though it's less so for Indies), they have an unrealisitic view of how they should be compensated.
By the way, I don't consider myself a "pro-g2a guy". The vast majority of my games are direct steam/humble sales. I just want to answer the one sided propaganda.

First thought was Shadow Warrior 2 - which would certainly be welcome.
Shogun 2 would be somewhat less exciting but still nice to have.
NieR: Automata on the other hand would be a complete gamechanger from what I have seen so far. We need these one of a kind gems for the Linux gaming portfolio - much more so then generic new shiny AAA IV.
Since I have never been good at this deciphering Feral game, I actually have some hope it`s NieR: Automata. If it's not...well...hopefully they will have it on their radar after reading this thread ;-)

Gempalm, the thing is that using g2a might get you burned and it's insurance policy is worthless and a scam. You're free to do what you want with your money but what is not right is encouraging others to do the same fully knowing the risks associated. By using g2a you're not "sticking it to the man" unlike those "media fanboys" you mention, you're just making money for some crooked business and nothing really changes.

Canonical drop the Unity desktop environment for Ubuntu favour of going back to GNOME

When Ubuntu switched to Unity was when I got involved in GNOME 3 development, at least for the first release. I had been messing with GNOME 3 preview builds and was excited for the direction it was heading, and when Unity was announced and shown I was dumb struck, especially considering everything they wanted to do in Unity could be done in Base GNOME 3 through theming and extensions. Anyway, I helped out with trying to make it a good release and the rest of my family liked it as well so I set it up on their machines.
Unfortunately with some of the changes in future releases to keep supporting old packages required by Unity it became difficult to keep GNOME 3 running until thankfully Ubuntu GNOME came around, which is what I currently run. I'm glad that the waste in resources will be gone and more users will be on GNOME and pushing it forward as they did in the past. Rather than Ubuntu being the red headed stepchild that everyone uses but switch the DE to something else after awhile it will line up with other distributions and it will mean things like games likely being more easily supported on other Linuxes.

Yes, that's what I said, keys are licenses and are non transferable. That's the scam. The legal principles behind this are not cut and dry. When movies and games were sold on media such as tapes, then discs, the media conglomerates tried to sue rental companies out of existence claiming that it was "licensed" media. That argument failed in court, because of the principle of first sale (if it looks like a sale, quacks like a sale, it's a sale).
When the same issue came up for downloaded software, the media conglomerates were a lot more powerful and they got their version of licensing law passed. So now something that is in every way a sale of a product can have unconscionable restrictions placed on it - or can even be revoked without a refund. This makes no legal sense, and is clearly anti-consumer, but as long as media fanboys like you exist to shame those who see through the shinanigans, nothing is likely to change.

Quoting: Alm888Because they are not "selling" games. They are licensing them to end-users. That's why it is called End-User License Agreement and everyone "buying" a game should read that and not just clicking through the whole installation process. Thus, even sharing (or even allowing to play to a friend who just dropped at your house) is illegal. So re-selling is a big NO-NO! Steam (AFAIK) has the right to ban an account it Valve finds out you it was re-sold to someone other than original owner.

I personally tried doing a Linux news site myself once, but my personal time and ability to keep up with news properly impaired it, so it sort of became a sort-of news site, more like a bit of everything site/blog with some tutorials and game reviews and such thrown in lol.
If you can do it though and even have some other contributors on standby as well, as I imagine you probably do thanks to GOL, you can always have a go at a new one. All power to you I say.

Not knocking this 'news' but might it be better to only report on Interesting MESA / AMDGPU updates on a Linux gaming site where the majority of gamers should be using the FOSS driver, which is better for gaming and officially supported by companies like Feral ? It wouldnt be good to confuse new Linux AMD users any more than they have to be given the multiple naming schemes and combos when talking about the AMD Linux GPU drivers. In fact AMDGPU-Pro drivers do not work properly on some distros and also require downloading and manually installing which is the kind of headache that really puts people off Linux usage in general.
A simple PPA of AMDGPU/MESA or in arch/antergos/manjaros case them being supplied as standard as those distros are newer should be all that is needed.
imo of couse ^_^

This news doesn't surprise me.
I know Ubuntu from the beginng. Decades ago I've tested all major distributions...
Redhat (before they sold enterprise versions), Suse, Gentoo, DSL, Mandrake (later Mandriva....), Slackware, ... and always returned to Debian.
From the beginning Ubuntu was simply overbloan and slow like hell compared to the others.
Do you know that Ubuntu is MS Partner? Most of you will know I think.
Somehow the Ubuntu team (maybe only Shuttleworth) think they can do all better than the others and that is their big mistake. They think too much like MS and ignore THE LINUX COMMUNITY.
MS is dieing a slow death and they KNOW IT.
When Ubuntu keeps follow up its selfish path they will vanish.
LINUX IS NOT WINDOWS!!! - IT'S FREEDOM, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILTY - LINUX BELONGS TO ALL OF US!!!
REAL LINUX DEVELOPERS EXCHANGE WITH OTHERS AND DECIDE TOGETHER WHATS THE BEST SOLUTION FOR ALL.
So please Mr. Shuttleworth... don't go the MS way... ask others if your choice/idea is the right one for EVERYONE!

If it winds up being Total War: Shogun 2, that's not my jam, but that's cool. If it winds up being Shadow Warrior 2, I'll be happy. If it winds up being NieR: Automata, I will need to change my tidy whities. Imagine getting a AAA Japanese game, and not just any AAA Japanese game, a Platinum game, on Linux? That would be MONUMENTAL.
