Get Sweeping, Dustforce Now On Steam For Linux
By abelthorne, 7 July 2014 at 8:54 am UTC

Is it still supposed to be a beta version? I can install and run it from Steam directly, no need to opt-in for anything (I don't even have a beta tab in the properties of the game).

I have mixed feelings on the issue... On the one hand, having people pay again for the Linux version creates more incentive for creating one at all and helps sale-numbers as people who switch over are counted against Linux sales. Also, considering that extra work was done, it IS morally worth extra money.

On the other hand they should at least give a significant discount for a purchase on a new platform, since while the native Linux client adds value, it adds value more on the level of a DLC than a full game.

Well, the couple who murdered two off-duty cops in Las Vegas and who said. "This is a revolution" as they shot in cold blood, certainly meet anyone's definition of terrorist, except for Fox News watchers.

It has always been possible, other games have done it. Steamplay is optional and not a requirement.
Surprised to know that it's even possible ! Do we have any example of games which need separate purchases ?

Well, I had bought CIV V for Windows, and, when the Linux version was released, I did have to buy it again. $16.99 for a native version with all the DLC was, to me, a steal.

There will not be problem for Star Citizen and Kingdom Come: Deliverance because the CryEngine is already available for the dev.

WTF, Crysis 2 was a bad game? Get outta here. It is my favourite shooter of recent years.
And the multiplayer in that game were awesome.

Quoting: abelthorneWell, Crytek (the main company) has had difficulties these last years with games selling far less than expected (Crysis 2, Ryse...) and buying a lot of other dev studios. So it's not really a big surprise.
There are rumours about Deep Silver buying Crytek UK (and probably completing the development of Homefront 2).
Naturally, Crysis 2 and Ryse were bad games.
I beg to differ. I thought Crysis 2 was an excellent game and one of the best FPS of the year it came out, but it was no surprised that it sold less than Crysis 1.

And I find it strange that you "know" a game is going to suck when you haven't even played it yet.

Yep, I'm glad someone else is sticking up for Crysis 2. It improved on Crysis 1 in every possible way - better engine, graphics, better (if still silly) plot, fantastic set pieces, stealth that worked. It was superb.

It wasn't quite as long. Or perhaps it was a similar length, but I was more familiar with the tactics - I finished Crysis 2 in 10.5 hours, while the original took me 12. Similar to Metro:LL.

I wonder how this affects Star Citizen? Will they still be able to offer Linux support if Crytek fold?

This should be summarized for every game as "if you buy the game when the GNU/Linux version isn't yet released you aren't buying the GNU/Linux version". So simple... It hurts GNU/Linux sales numbers and it may shoot you back too like this time.

And I thought the enhanced edition showing up on Linux was something of a large assumption...

Honestly, the Enhanced edition games don't really add much other than a few badly written companions and new bugs. You guys are better off waiting for the wine bottled version of the BG2 from GoG since that version will at least support old mods.

Warlock 2 Linux Port Looks Almost Done

Paradox has been pretty good about porting to Linux: Crusader Kings 2, Europa Universalis IV, Cities In Motion 1 & 2. They've made me a customer.

Even if they do finish it and release it for Linux, letting that many people go in the middle of development can seriously hurt the quality of the game.

I was really positively surprised by what they showed at E3, I don't want to be negatively surprised once it's actually out.

Although I am hoping that Crytek UK stays with Crytek, Deep Silver has proven to be quite Linux friendly, so Linux support will surely continue for Homefront: The Revolution.

The question will be if CryTEC will finish the engine port.

For Crytec itself... well, we'll see about it. They've had a lot of big AAA titles not selling well enough, so I can imagine them in difficulties (those productions cost a few million after all). Though, a company as CryTEC either finds an investor or somebody taking over the company. The question will be how linux-friendly they'd be, because that's still an adventure. But my guess is, that without full platform support, engines won't license in future as well as those supporting all platforms since the game developers often rather take the 1 % more in sales than not, and if the engine is good, the porting efforts are not too high and will still pay off.

I will wait until aspyr releases the game. I don't want to wait as much as I wait for civV (bought at lauch).
But I think that we will not have to wait that long. I am almost sure that the game engine is an evolution of the civV one. So, it should be fast.
