Virtual Programming Are Working To Improve The Witcher 2 On Linux
By hardpenguin, 11 June 2014 at 6:52 am UTC

Give them some time... Most important thing is, they will work on that port and they wanna learn from their mistakes. If it worked for Macs it should work for us - the difference is, Macs always come with NVIDIA card on board, so it is a bit more standarized platform than Linux (install on any hardware, yay!)

And if you think that CDP is not involved, you are probably wrong, because I doubt that Virtual Programming would fix their Witcher port for free, out of kindness. The guy above is right about support in big companies. It is often much easier to contact actual developers than publisher.

I'm interested, if they bring first Witcher to Linux, too (yes, it is available for Mac already). I wanna play the whole trilogy!

Yes for the game, no for the Adobe AIR. Seriously, why using this crap again?

I better go see some Beksinski works...

People yapping about support while pointing fingers at one company really live in different world then i do.

You find this everywhere
Dead space case - (google "camera spinning"). zillion bug reports on this problem. not even one official answer of bugfix. only way to fix it is manually creating file
Dead space 2 - same problem still exists, same workaround still works, still no official response or bugfix.

Quoting: GuestOtherwise, I just saw a lot words with no substance aimed directly at trying to derail the topic.

I totally agree with mirv. This is just gargled tech-speak which says nothing meaningful at all. I smell troll.

As an example:

First you say you know nothing about low level Radeon (why Radeon??) GPU programming , then you say it's easier to program it at a low level.

Then suddenly Cmake and Autotools is a "crazy SDK". Quite hilarious really.

In OpenGL no-one mixes shader compilation with run-time GPU programming. GLSL shaders aren't precompiled like in HLSL, but it's instead done on start-up (so slightly longer load times).

OMG 307 packets on my last pacman -Syu. Some KDE updates as well as (finally) the latest mesa and kernel stuff...

Anyway thank you for these graphs :)

All that graph really shows is that although it's better than it was, it's still complete rubbish compared to nvidia on linux with prop drivers.

Alienware's Steam Machine Fully Announced, They Aren't Using SteamOS
By , 11 June 2014 at 12:38 am UTC

Sigh, I enjoy using linux and it's my daily driver at home. But reading some of the invective rage filled comments makes me very very disappointed at the lack of critical thinking.

Alienware have always said the thing would be out in the third quarter of 2014. Valve bless them have decided to delay releasing the Steam Controller and thus Steam OS until 2015.

Imagine you have set up a materials and parts contracts, supply chain, had custom boards designed and produced, production line, distribution, warehousing and advertising for a brand new product and tied it to a specific date for your financial results. Then your crucial external partner turns around and goes 'oops we underestimated our beta period' we have to delay by an unspecified amount of time that will likely be 9 months away. No business would take a massive financial hit like that without trying to make some of that investment back. That's all this is. To an end user as long as the thing goes straight into Big Picture they won't really know or care about the difference snyway.

I'm not sure why Alienware are idiots here.

Look better... you even have sample code that shows how to program the radeonsi 3D hw pipeline. It's work in progress though, and the guy is not funded neither "official". I give you an hint: github.

Wait, what?! Civilization 4 is also now listed in my Steam library under Linux! Looks like a mistake though because it doesn't actually install anything when telling Steam to install it.

This would still be amazing though. I've always liked the music and narration of Civ 4 much better than that in Civ 5.

Ugh, it's refusing to change resolution to 1920 x 1080. It keeps hanging when I try to change it, and then reverts back to 1024 x 768. Interestingly, when I ran it through Wine I didn't have that problem (although I had the occasional crash).

Brave New World expansion seems to be in place though, so that's a thing.

ETA: and now it works after a few attempts. Very strange.

Quoting: AnonymousIt's a chart. I didn't do it, sorry, correct: I didn't fake it. I don't trust it .

Jokes beside, fact is that Intel, Valve and AMD are now throwing "cash" in the form of developers (aka the "better cash" at this topic. I hope they'll iron out some of the long standing mesa issues too (architectual whise, some parts need refactoring badly...).
So if not cash, what are they throwing at the project?

Hmh, definitely thinking on doing a pledge. I like adventures with puzzles.
But it seems to focus a lot on tablets, and I've seen so many bad ports that I'm not sure yet if it would be worth my while. But well, still some days to think about it.

Just did some unscientific testing by playing a little Doom 3, Brütal Legend, Amnesia, and Trine 2 and did not see any huge differences; Doom 3 and Trine 2 might have been a little more responsive, but as it was being done just by feel my impressions do not account for much.

I have been keeping my eye out for a new card, but unless I spy a bargain I am perfectly content to stay with my current one for the moment.

Quoting: HamishI suppose these improvements are mostly limited to radeonsi and not r600g?

Not that I am complaining mind; it is getting to the point with my Radeon HD 4670 that it is the hardware and not the driver performance that is slowing me down on some newer titles. The card is from 2008 after all, and has already given me almost four years solid service.

You should get some improvements as I've seen patches flying around about the r600 series but in general a 4670 is going to struggle against newer titles, although Source & Xonotic should be able to compensate quite well.

Quoting: Maquis196On a random note, the mac only version of Civ 4 is now appearing in my Linux list! Got quite a few games and only 7 of them are "Mac only" ports.

Id personally be more stoked about a Linux version of Civ 4. Guess in the meantime I'll play Civ5 a bit, worth a go!

Was just about to ask that. I tried to install it, but it resulted in 0 bytes. Personally I'd be more than happy if they ported Civ IV + Expansions (Colonization!) as well as Civ III. Each of them supposedly has slightly different gameplay and people tend to prefer one over another. I wouldn't mind trying them all out to decide for myself, but I failed to run either Civ IV: Colonization or Civ III under wine... So anyway I hope it's a good omen and not merely a glitch! :-)

Oh that's so important that after the recent half hearted dithering a counter example is set.
Someone takes a financial risk and does the Right Thing, no matter what.
Even the way those guys approach the Linux crowd in the forums could well be part of an HowTo (communicate with the Linux community and make them like you).

First thing, they asked for help.
Small problems like the DLC thing are solved in no time.
This is really promising.

If AMD fulfills their plans on making a 90% open source driver my next card will be AMD.

My guess is that I'll have to buy the newest/current generation of their card to get the most benefits & support from the driver.

As an IT for more than 10 years I educate people as to which GPU/Vendor they should buy from - if AMD pulls this off I'll be helping all my friends, family, etc... buy AMD. My next Laptop GPU will be AMD for Linux support, etc...

I always saw AMD as "plagued", last night I had a dream that I was picking out a AMD Chipset & CPU for my next build. Funny thing is that's likely what will happen.

Quoting: abelthorneI find the results a bit strange. I use Ubuntu 14.04 with an AMD RadeonHD 7700 and the free driver (RadeonSI). I'm not sure of the version of Mesa I have (10.0.x, I think) but I'm pretty sure I have more than 25 fps in Team Fortress 2 (the game is completely playable). My GPU isn't the same model as in the chart but it's the same generation, I guess the results should be about the same.

That's great if performances are boosted, I'm not complaining; it's just that the blue columns in the chart seem a bit low to me.

I will concede I did a much more thorough benchmark this time round than last but I did indeed get those low numbers and it was barely playable. I'm not sure what clicked, perhaps a bug somewhere with my card.
