The game runs with Mesa 10.1.4 here. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6850. Sometime it is crashing, when I try to start the arena game mode. The menu is not very performant, but ingame it is playable.

might be i said it badly,
discounts are awesome for me and for you. but, for 1st game on linux for developer who is testing viability... discount might prove as double edged sword for linux
they might come short on earnings and thus skew as linux being even lower margin market. this could affect their future decisions on how viable linux is

The current AMD Catalyst driver contains a problem which stops the game from running. AMD have already fixed the problem, and the fix will be in the next driver release.
Intel is not supported simply because the driver performance is currently insufficient to run the game well enough. It will run, but the framerate is not good.
The open source Nouveau and Radeon drivers are simply not feature complete enough to run the game. Witcher 2's RED Engine is making full use of OpenGL 3.2 features.

... but does anybody know if there's a possibility to get a Steam key although I bought the retail version (back then in my Windows days)?

its an amazing game, but if you not played Witcher 1 and your interested in the story then give Witcher 1 a go first (under wine), its takes a time to gets used to the weird controls/combat but will give you a great story for Witcher 2 (and you can import save game)

I have a low latency connection :P
It's important to also stress the client needs to be fairly ok too though. I have a AMD A4 APU in my laptop, 4GB ram and Arch Linux but it still has a slow hardware decode.
By Half-Shot, 22 May 2014 at 2:39 pm UTC
Quoting: c00kie55low latency network and gpu horsepower on the streaming server will be the most importent factors
so other than network the specs of the host machine is practically the only thing that matter?
but offcourse client needs to be able to stream the picture and send back input from controller whitout lagging
iam so slow Half-Shot somehow beat me ...

I'm looking forward to trying this. We only have Linux machines in our house and I'd like to get the wife into a bit of light gaming on her laptop.
I'll also be getting a low profile Steam machine for the TV.

It used to work on all 3 platforms but due to stability only Windows was kept on. I don't think its going to be a long wait.
None of the power is distrobuted in the way that a data center distrobutes if that's what you mean. The host will be using and have avaliable the same amount of power as if you were in front of it. The client only needs enough to be able to hardware decode a stream at the desired resolutuion and framerate while transmitting controls.

Quoting: wleoncioAnother thing I couldn't figure out is how the processing power is distributed. I mean, the performance cap will be set by the slower machine or are the specs of the host machine practically the only thing that matter?

It is hard, but I never felt it was particularly unfair. You tend to die when you run out of ammo, but if you've run out of ammo, it's because you haven't glitched enough baddies in the first place.
Very smooth game, very, very replayable. One of the most slightly-infuriating "just one more go" type of games, that I love - up there with Rogue Legacy in my opinion.
And they keep adding new content for free! It's like FTL all over again.
