Wasteland 2 RPG Release Date Announced Plus New Build Live For Linux
By scaine, 22 May 2014 at 6:45 am UTC

This was the second ever Kickstarter I backed and like you, I'm waiting for full release. It was originally planned for October last year, but as long as the spit-and-polish pays off, I'm happy to wait for an epic result. I'm not going to ruin it by beta-testing! :D

I've emailed them for clarification.

Their store tagline still mentions Steam Machines though, maybe it won't be day 1 support now.

Alienware State Their Steam Machine Won't Be Very Profitable
By , 21 May 2014 at 5:10 pm UTC

Quoting: Xpanderpretty much what Mike said!
i would go with FX8320 though..which is just £15 more . so you can get the more tasks on the same time and its more future proof since the new generation of consoles are the same 8 core as well.
though 6300 is still super good.

buying a gaming pc nowadays isnt that expensive..most expensive part is the GPU. CPU isnt that important for most of the games..

i always laugh when some Gaming Laptops coming with i7 4770M or similar and then have some random crappy nvidia 640M ... why the fcuk you put that expensive CPU to your gaming machine...

Would have gone with the FX8320, but not sure of that PSU can handle the power consumption. But yeah, if you have a good PSU and an extra £15, that's a better choice.

I think after my current experience (i5 with 640m), I would say why bother getting a "gaming" laptop at all? They're normally at least £500, but for £600 you can get a gaming PC like the build above (which has 3x or more performance than one of these laptops) to do heavy-duty things and spend the rest on a celeron laptop for browsing and such (which would be able to handle stuff like FTL or Papers Please just fine). Laptops break all the time and go obsolete really quickly with no option of upgrading, so spending more than £300 on one is pointless (in hindsight) and not to mention the over-heating you get with putting a gaming GPU in such a small space. My advice to anyone looking to get a gaming laptop - you're just wasting money on an expensive swiss army knife that can't do anything well and for the same money you can have two devices which do.

Epic Games Release New Information About Unreal Engine 4 & Linux Support
By Lordpkappa, 21 May 2014 at 6:56 am UTC

Quoting: MikeIt's so great to see news like this all the time. If someone told be 2 years ago that a company like Epic would be giving so much support to Linux, I probably would have laughed in their face, it's incredible how far things have come since the release of the Steam client.

My main concern now is that if SteamOS and Linux gaming as a whole don't take off, then all this will remain as a fad or forgotten part of history where everyone got all excited for Linux for a while. As each day goes by though and another big company is backing Linux gaming, that seems less and less likely and the prospect of Linux becoming the OS of choice for gamers is growing.

I don't think so, now we have a solid base to grow up, all major 3d engine now support Linux and this is a sign of the huge job thath Valve has done.

Act III Of Kentucky Route Zero Is Available Now, Plus Some Thoughts

Sounds like a story which doesn't deserve months of waiting between the parts.
I would most definitely suggest the opposite. If you do hold off until the last part is released, I'd recommend leaving some time between acts for your experiences to settle and resonate rather than playing through it in/as one act of consumption where the nuance and detail of the game get lost in the progression of the narrative as you plough ahead into subsequent parts.

Thanks for your thoughts!
I will consider this when playing the game.

BTW, I really know the times where getting stuck was normal.
Infocom stuff was among my first adventure games...

Wargame: Red Dragon, Strategy Game Released For SteamOS Linux
By , 20 May 2014 at 11:42 pm UTC

So I just gave this one a spin under Ubuntu 14.04 with the closed AMD drivers and have to say that performance is much improved over Airland Battle. It's perhaps only 20% below Windows speeds now, based on the settings I had to reduce in order to get the same framerate. Overall it's still running very well though. I'm positively surprised.

The only major issue appears to be that it is currently not possible to join multiplayer games due to a version number mismatch.

I did the same thing with XCOM: EU, but no DLCs. Is buying DLCs (or the games themselves) after an eventual Linux announcement help bring attention to Linux? How does Steam count OS usage, by the OS on which a game is installed or what?

I bought it with all the DLC's as was hoping it would come to linux one day thanks to the SteamOS announcement where it showed Civ 5 being played on the steamos machine.

Pandora as well, coming to us at the end of May.

There was a time when "getting stuck" was normal in games, and that was what pushed players away from their screens to ponder what they'd seen, experienced and learned. That's shied away from today as more and more content developers seek to avoid risk of letting players get distracted. Sword & Sworcery EP presented an interesting mechanic to encourage taking breaks. I like to think that KR0's episodic releases have similar value.

The game itself perhaps asks us to consider this. Shortly after starting Act III, you can come across some characters arguing about whether they should wait until something is finished before viewing it.

QuoteWhat's finished? Would it be better if it were finished? Can we be sure of that?
