Banished City-building Strategy Game Will Get A Linux Port
By Xpander, 13 April 2014 at 11:28 am UTC

Quoting: STiAT@Xpander i'm just sick of "getting games in wine to work". I've by now 17 different wine prefixes and configurations for different games, and I just decided I won't buy games to play in wine anymore. As well as buying on windows (wine) it counts as windows for steam sales.

i hear you ..i feel quite same lately.. but if theres a game i really want to play and its known to work in wine. then i will still do it.. at least we have the option to do that.

as for prefixes..i usualy make standalone packages ... making new perfix and special wine version and putting inside the game directory.. then running a script that runs all those files.. so i dont f up with wine updates or what not

Firaxis Games New IP "Civilization: Beyond Earth" Will Come To Linux - CONFIRMED
By Cheeseness, 13 April 2014 at 7:05 am UTC

Good work on following this up. I spent a while trying to find a 2K/Firaxis source or press release for this (just in case it was yet another misunderstanding that propagated itself across a whole stack of news sites).

I loved Alpha Centauri, and it seems like the Beyond Earth team are the right people to make a spiritual successor.

worked like native in wine as well tbh..
but yeah native is always better...

but this game was quite "short", i mean you start with same stuff every time and there is no multiplayer. not much variety.. but ofc one man made it and the price isnt that high so its still worth it.

Moebius: Empire Rising Adventure Game Delayed For Linux Because Of Unity3D
By Speedster, 13 April 2014 at 5:36 am UTC

Quoting: XilAlthough you might find the reason they give a valid one Liam, it was never mentioned on their kickstarter, all that was said was: If we get at least $400K there will be a Linux version. The whole unity 3 vs 4 excuse came later.

Oh come on, the unity 3 vs 4 was the reason behind having a stretch goal. They didn't give the exact details on what the stretch goal funds would be spent on, "upgrading to Unity 4 plus testing/bugfixing on linux" but then again, other projects don't either -- most people don't care about that level of detail, and the single-page kickstarter format really discourages it! I discussed linux port issues early on at the Pinkerton forum, and they have always been consistent that reuse of existing adventure-genre code in Unity 3 was the reason for Linux needing extra effort.

Quoting: XilThen they hook up with Phoenix online who did not even consider a linux version of the Gabriel Knight remake which at least made me go hmmmmm

That is totally not true, Phoenix Online expected to make a Linux version of GK20 after getting the whole upgrade to Unity 4 thing done! The tech lead didn't realize that the contract with Activision was not flexible enough to kick in another platform merely because it became easy to do so, and he ended up having to apologize for getting our hopes up. If Jane Jenson were a big Linux advocate, she might have attempted a renegotiation, but considering that Jane's a game developer who doesn't care a lot about platforms it's not surprising she isn't willing to take the risk of annoying Activision just to make us Linux users happy. I'm sure all the grumpy comments she's got on the topic haven't made her regret her decision either, so I've tried to shut up about it after just a few posts ;)

Broken Sword 1 Directors Cut & 2:Remastered Now On Steam For Linux
By , 13 April 2014 at 12:07 am UTC

Quoting: DrMcCoyThe ones I got from the Humble Bundle and the ones on Steam are native (in fact, IIRC, they are identical). I really doubt the the Humble Store versions are different there.

Cool. So given the Humble Bundle will be the same as the Humble Store, there is no problem. Just slack management on Humble's part in listing system requirements in the store.

My problem is my mind works extremely literally, and conflict in information like that sends it into a frenzied spasm ;)

We have consumer protection laws in Aus that state (amongst other things) you can't use false or misleading information in order to sell a product or service; in which case they can be taken to task over Linux stretch goals that don't deliver. They have to provide a Linux version or refund money. I have no idea about US law as to if there are any consumer protection laws. Given that some clown has been selling plots of the moon to the stupid rich, I'd say probably not.

Has anybody bought these through the Humble Store? The icons say Linux supported, but the sys req mentions only windows (BS1) and Windows/Mac (BS2). Only BS5 is consistent with the icons and sys req. Is it safe to assume BS1&2 are Linux native and not some wine wrapper?
