Are More AAA Games Waiting For Steam Machines?

I really dislike this border being set between AAA and indie. It is constantly changing to the favor of indie games, however how can one be this limited to play only AAA games? Because superior graphics? Even if patterns of those games are all repetitive? You can grab nice 2D title instead and have really looong hours of fun.

Games are games. People should choose fun ones instead of those that are most visually appealing.

But I guess GOL readers already know it :)

Second asds thought. Most of it is a live/CGI mixture, not in-game graphics.

And by the footage you can only vagely guess, what this game is all about..

The great thing about the recent Linux gaming boom is that it is not actually being driven by only one developer or vendor this time - this is not like the first Linux gaming boom of the late 1990's and early 2000's that was entirely dependant on the success of Loki Software.

Valve are a major player in the Linux gaming scene sure, but they are hardly the only people involved in this, and things were heating up long before the Linux Steam release. To say that if Valve falls we fall to is actually rather churlish.

Maybe individual devs who lack confidence in Linux for various reasons are doing this of their own volition, but I really doubt that Valve is pushing for this. Perhaps certain devs/pubs don't WANT to officially support Linux as a whole, but rather only SteamOS. That's the only way it makes sense they would wait for the Steam Machine retail launch. Why push out a game for a platform that isn't out [at retail] yet?

Anyone who seriously thinks Valve is pushing for this needs to get their heads examined. Go watch the Steam Dev Days talks, or any other recent interviews with Gabe. They seem proud that the Linux game number is exploding and it's clear that they're pushing Linux hard, even beyond their own distro.

If you really believe Valve are behind this, tell me again how years-old second-rate games like Two Worlds 2 will make a compelling launch title for $500+ living room PCs? When crafting your answer, please factor into it that games like Two Worlds 2, XCOM, and Counter Strike all came out 2-3 years ago on $200 PlayStation 3s and anyone who REALLY wants to play them already has.

I hope that Steam dream will carry on too, but even if it fails then we will still have the indie game scene to cater for our gaming needs.

In the meantime:

AAA games that we are expecting for a steamOS release:
  • Two Worlds Two
    Tropico 5

AAA games also likely to come out at that time:
  • Witcher 2
    Total War Rome 2
    Xcom EU
    CS GO
    Project Cars

AAA Games we'd like to hope will be there:
  • Civ 5
    Elderscrolls! (Personal wish)
    Mount and Blade

Well the games releasing with Steam Machines make sense -- they want a reason for people to switch to it.

Ballpoint Universe - Infinite, A Crazy Hand Drawn Action Platformer On Steam For Linux
By Liam Dawe, 7 April 2014 at 2:15 pm UTC

Quoting: OrkultusOne thing they need to fix on steam is where you go to search in the SteamOS / Linux section. Down at the bottom it always says 0-100. It also doesn't show every game available for linux.

It is the same for Mac, that list is of the "Newest" games, not a full list.

Folk Tale Sandbox Fantasy City-Builder Nearing The Linux Release, Finally

But that was Bink 1, which has been RE'd by ffmpeg-people in the meantime. Bink 2 hasn't, apart from some cursory glances by Kostya. Since he's expressed how boring he thinks it is, and some other wtf-ery, I doubt he will take deeper look in the near future.

Steam Hardware Survey For March 2014, Linux Is Just Holding
By , 7 April 2014 at 12:19 pm UTC

And again, the totals are off:

Windows: 95.12
Mac: 3.54
Linux: 1.20
Total: 99.86

As ever, I don't hold these numbers in very high regard. Just like the adverts that claim that "95% of people would recommend us!" out of a total of 134 people.

The only thing you should take from a survey like this is trends; and the trend of Linux is much the same as it was for the last year, unsurprisingly, as there is absolutely no compelling reason for people to switch yet.

Quoting: GuestI've been using Steam for Linux since the beginning, and only got the survey on Linux for the first time... While I regularly get it when using Wine to run Steam.
Wine is recorded as Linux (and the Wine version is also recorded). I'd speculate that the reason you see it more is likely due to the fact that people running under Wine decline it more often than those in native Linux.

I'd like to see a citation for that. It's been argued the other way before - I didn't think Valve had published anything to the effect that "wine is recorded as Linux".

Same thing here. Linux users have a reason to answer the survey, Windows users don't.

So you think Windows users will actually cancel the survey? That's debatable - I reckon they'd just click "submit" to get rid of the annoying dialog box on their screens. Plus, there's a lot of Windows fan boys there.

I wonder if there's another reason us Linux boys and girls don't seem to get the survey as much. Maybe Valve are happy to milk the 1% mark until the Steam Machines go live, THEN give it an equal footing. That would massively boost the SteamOS/Linux figures, citing the devices as a "success".

As conspiracy theories go, I'm happy with this explanation. No, no, don't go picking holes in it... just accept it. Move along now.

GOL Cast: Sipping On Absinthe in Spate
By scaine, 7 April 2014 at 12:06 pm UTC

Good cast, Samsai. Worth a look, I think, but I've still to get into Glare and this looks like bizarre cross between Glare and Limbo. There's a wee hint of the Bastion narrator in there too, I reckon!

I'll get my "unplayed" games list down a bit, then I'll give this a go.

Ballpoint Universe - Infinite, A Crazy Hand Drawn Action Platformer On Steam For Linux

Quoting: tuubiIt's obviously a side-scrolling shooter, not a platformer. Personally I had my fill of these on the C64 and Amiga back in the day. The art style looks cool though.

I beg to differ, it has a bit of all of it in which is why I called it an "action platformer" you run along and jump around platforms and there is shooter action in it.

I stand by my title ;)

3 million Steam Machines is terribly ambitious.
