Personally, I'm psyched to see the remastered version Broken Sword 2 there. :)

I just wish the Linux version would be up on Steam as well. Ditto with the remastered version of Broken Sword (the first one).

As others have said, source code being lost actually happens quite often, yes.

Quoteso they couldn't port it even if they wanted to

Well, they could have reverse-engineered it. I'm pretty sure there are people willing to do that if you pay them.

Hell, I'd be down for such jobs myself, provided the engine code gets released under the terms of the GPLv3. Well, maybe not System Shock 2; I never played that game after all and feel no connection to it.

Quoting: SangeetKhatriHow can someone lose the Source Code? This is extent of carelessness.

If a company owns the rights to the code and then goes bust, unless someone buys it (or an employee decides to steal it) before liquidation, the code will be lost. This has happened to a number of games as well as Strife and a number of Apogee / 3D Realms Games older games.

Bear in mind the times these games were developed as well, no cloud storage, volatile storage mediums and gaming was still very much a niche; with the games being developed by small companies that couldn't afford / didn't have the foresight for proper data protection.

It has been known to happen. There is a reason why Strife had to be reverse engineered using the Doom engine code, for instance.

The Open Source Game Corner, Highlighting Open Source Projects Part 2
By Speedster, 1 April 2014 at 4:59 pm UTC

Quoting: liamdaweThings don't need to be in 3D or look realistic to be good-looking.

Also coders are easy to find, graphics artists aren't.

One of my best friends is a graphics artist, but I don't know of any open source game projects where she would fit in. She's a 2D artist not a modeler or animator, and doesn't particularly care for sci-fi or dark/violent themes. For work it's typical website stuff like logos and backgrounds, but as a volunteer she does cool cartoony posters with penguins for my Linux group, and for fun has also done some nice painterly still lifes. Has been using inkscape and gimp for years now, after I converted her to Linux based on the high cost of Apple + Adobe.

Any suggestions of a team where she might fit in, if graphic artists are in demand?

Why do you say so?

Because he's more likely to play online, than on a LAN? Just a guess.

Not a fan of DRM here either, but I've had this argument to death and like you, I don't feel like going through it all again. I'm "fine" with Steam, but tend to buy on Humble and then redeem if possible. Best of both worlds.
