The Witcher 2 Massive RPG Looks Like It Will Be On Linux
By DrMcCoy, 19 March 2014 at 10:12 pm UTC
With my somewhat vested interested in games based on BioWare's Aurora engine, I'd be quite interested in that as well. :P
I'd especially like to see how they'll handle the Lua scripts. The Windows version was released with compiled Lua scripts, which are quite icky to work with.

Has this game gone on sale on Steam yet or are all the LTD sales at full price? I'd assume it will move a lot more when it is going for $5 or less.

Quoting: tigerI find this game overpriced for what it is. Also, it's not an AAA game, so don't expect great sales.
Just curious, what are the sales for Mac?

Unreal Engine 4 Announced With Linux Support Including The Editor, Source Code Access & More!
By DrMcCoy, 19 March 2014 at 10:03 pm UTC
Keep in mind though, that despite what other news sites have reported, while this might technically be "open source", you're not getting free (as in speech) software. It will not be GPL (nevermind any more permissive licenses), and earlier engines won't be GPL'd either.
From what I've read, there's no info yet on how exactly the license will look or how code contributions will be handled.

Me too. But now the circumstances are different than before.
PS : Now that I recall, the Unreal 3 thing was a very strange episode yet to clarify.
I remember to see in-game images and interviews with Icculus where he stated the game develoupment was almost complete. But the game never saw the light for not explained reasons.
And giving more wood to the fire, 3 or 4 years later, was released a Linux version of game that uses UE3 : Dungeon Defenders. Strange.

Flash Is Dying, Long Live OpenFL

By , 19 March 2014 at 9:02 pm UTC
Just to be clear :)
OpenFL is *not* a replacement for the Flash Plugin. It's not like Gnash or LightSpark (both plugins that render SWF content), or even ShumWay (which renders SWF content as HTML5).
Instead, it's for coders. It's basically the Flash API in Haxe. So you port your ActionScript code over to Haxe (which is a very similar, but superior, language to ActionScript), and you can still make the same method calls.
Then, when you compile, it's like Unity -- you can target Android, iOS, Desktop (Mac, Windows, Linux), Blackberry, Tizen, and now HTML5.
I'd also like to point out that on many of those targets you're building NATIVE binaries -- Haxe will output your game to C++ source files and then compile them again into a properly configured native executable for that platform.

Cd Project has decided to report the release of The witcher III. Now, there is "possible" release on Linux for TWII + Gog.com available on Linux...
So, maybe that Cd Projekt has reported TWIII to port the game on Linux and release the game on Console + Windows + SteamOS ?
It will be great :D

HTML5 sentenced Flash, Adobe executed it and wisely started working on HTML5. I think Youtube keeps Flash mostly because of IE users.
Why? Is that necessary to stop using it?
Quoting: mannyhopefully adobe will just adopt openFL or html5 once and for all and drop their closed plugin.

That can help, since it's supposedly POSIX based. But graphics APIs there are not portable (PSSL): http://twvideo01.ubm-us.net/o1/vault/gdceurope2013/Presentations/825424RichardStenson.pdf

Quoting: Shmerl@s_d: Making Witcher 2 port seems like way less work for them. They already had an OS X native build of it. Witcher 3 on the other hand uses new version of their engine, and there is no indication that it supports OpenGL yet. And using the same D3D -> GL translation trick like they did in the Witcher 2 won't work, since they are using DirectX 11 there.

Quoting: Joe5% of revenue is actually a lot if you have a successful title. On the other hand a pricing model like this makes it affordable for individual developers or small teams to pick it up without worry.

But... it's a port of a game they already made?! They... they didn't have to do that... they could have simply held off until The Witcher 3, we would have totally waited... but going back and building this for us? I'm taken aback, to be honest.
I suppose that the right and prudent thing would be to buy it from them on GOG when it comes?
Was it us in the community? Was it further research? Damn it Liam, get us a freaking interview because WTF is happening in this bizarre world :O
