Morrowind RPG Open Source Engine OpenMW Releases 0.29
By OpenMW, 15 March 2014 at 2:16 pm UTC

@Liamdawe: Thanks for updating this site with news about our update, all help is welcome!

@commodore256 and Heimdall: I'm no developer, so don't expect any release dates, but for some more information about our progress, check out the roadmap: https://bugs.openmw.org/projects/openmw/roadmap. If we are able to make as much progress as last year, OpenMW v1.0 won't be too far away. There is still a lot to do about the OpenCS but the team has always agreed that both don't have to be finished (meaning v1.0) at the same time.

Quoting: gbudnyI can't agree with this article that Earth 2140 Gold Edition is the old game because I didn't have a chance to played it on Linux. I remember that Runesoft ported Earth 2140 to Amiga OS and Mac OS X, but I think this first day when I can buy version for Linux.

I don't quite get what you're talking about.

The game IS old, as stated it the article it was originally released in 1997, new to Linux doesn't make it new.

Unity Confirms They Have No Plans For A Linux Editor
By rustybroomhandle, 15 March 2014 at 11:23 am UTC Likes: 1

I'm developing using Unity. It's a really good development environment and gets stuff done. I'm running it under WINE, which is not ideal, and if I get more established as an independent developer and able to devote more time to educating myself I'd very much like to move away from it entirely.

Thing is, running the editor under Wine seems to mostly use the wine-mono stuff, making me think that shipping a Linux-native editor might not be all that much effort for them, making this attitude doubly stupid.

Would love to have my frakking votes back though! :P

PIXEL PIRACY A 2D Pirate Sandbox Game With Ship Building Is Now On Linux

Well, I bought it, tried it (latest Linux version is 0.5.0.0) on Debian sid and Ubuntu 13.10.

Configuration works. After Game start.. black screen. One hears sounds though.
Seems a rendering problem. The steam discussion list is full of such entries.
I should have checked that. Seems the developers dont care.

On Windows 8 apparently there is no such problem on similar hardware.

Quoting: Heimdall
Quoting: commodore256Judging by the rate of progress, I estimate it well reach 1.0 in less than two years. (more than likely, 18 months) After that, I would love to see an OpenOblivion or an OpenCW for Capital Wasteland (Fallout 3) and maybe an OpenNV for New Vegas.
The developers disagree. Many have stated that they expect 1.0 before the end of this year. Given current development progress, I am almost certain they are right.
I said more than likely it's 18 months. That's a year and a half, not this year September 2015 and I'm fairly confident that OpenMW will reach 1.0 by March 2016.

All I'm saying is that given what they have left to do, unless they have a huge drop off in development over the next year, they will finish this year.

They just added in workable ranged combat for the player character in the most recent Git snapshots. They really are very close. Now it is mainly optimization and bug squashing (other than getting the save/load feature finished).

I'm not saying there isn't a bad side, but I guess the good side to this is that it will give more users to Godot and Leadwerks. I'm particularly interestested in Godot. It's Github contributions are coming from all over the place.

The first two are Okam but I think the others are independent of Okam.

Lame. It is definitely an issue, even if I now never plan to use it, having put my eggs in a different basket.

I suspect they'll cave, eventually. That, or they'll slowly cease to be relevant as devs migrate to other tools. If CryENGINE allows dev on Linux, I don't know why anyone would choose Unity3D, aside from the community and probably moreso the pricing (which I have not researched, I'm just assuming it's a lopsided comparison). But as stated, there are other options.

There is also Mures which seems to have the same intent and has been around for a while. This new remake looks graphically more impressive, though, and it looks like Mures is abandoned at this point AFAICT.

Quoting: AnonHey there, on which distro did you play the game? I unfortunately can't play it on openSUSE 13.1.

It's running fine for me on Linux Mint 16. Hopefully the devs get back to you on that steam thread you made; otherwise I'd email them directly.

I've played for almost an hour so far. It's definitely functional, but the animation is lacking and the writing is pretty flat (mind, after seeing one of the new episodes that problem may be beyond the scope of this game). Still, not a bad experience, the price is not unreasonable, and definitely a good addition for the kiddies. Although it is pretty reminiscent of the flash games I used to play on CN's website. Hopefully if they keep publishing proper games they'll start to expand somewhat; I'd definitely drop some cash for a good Adventure Time game ;)

Unity Confirms They Have No Plans For A Linux Editor
By Orkultus, 15 March 2014 at 12:47 am UTC

Quoting: LinasYes, it is an issue, because it means that games will continue being developed on Windows, and Linux version will be just a port, if at all.

This is true. All those games that we are STILL waiting for (Interstellar Marines, Gloria Victis, 7 Days to Die)....they wont see a Linux port until they are finished. Even then, the possibility of them canceling out that port is still there. Making Native games directly on Linux with Unity 3d, would mean that Windows and Mac would be a "Port". I know unity 3d has brought Linux alot of games, but it also seems like its still difficult for people to just simply "press the Linux port" button. If it was on Linux, it wouldn't be such a problem. As for the Mac versions...they always come out quicker because of their Mac Editor version. Im having a Love / Hate relationship with Unity. Im tired of Linux being the last "porting option", mostly because of those developers who want to finish the game on another platform first "Winddoze", and building their games with Third party plugins that dont work on Linux, so they have to spend even more time getting it to work, and then after that Linux version is released, go through another set of bugs found while playing it in Linux.

Also, having more tools like this on Linux would be awesome. I know we have plenty of Opensource game engines and a few good editing tools, but there is always room for more.

Add this to the list of tech I want to try but must wait until it's out for the commoners; I'm looking at you, Occulus Rift!

The analogue, erm, touchpad placements are an interesting choice. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, generally, but if there's one thing I like it's their gamepad (save for the wonky D-Pad), so I'm curious as to how this one compares.

that's too bad. I'm glad that we've got so many games from the Unity engine, but it's a shame Linux devs won't be joining their large community.

This means that developers that are using Unity (probably) won't migrate to Linux to do their developing. While this isn't a big loss for end-users, it does mean that the devs are locked down to expensive operating systems, and I don't think that's a good thing.

Developers are people too, they should be able to use whichever OS they prefer.

Quoting: maokei
Quoting: 5580same i think there will be no problem with fps games the only thing i'm concerned a bought is if there will be enough buttons to play all games and the layout. as well as it being made with all kinds of gaming in mind.
I think they are in the clear button wise since it seems to have 2 more buttons that the xbox 360 controller! What concerns me though if your sitting in the couch with that thing how are you going to be able to do voice communication if you can't connect a headset.

Bluetooth headset?
