Getting exciting! (would prefer to see a DRM free version than have it only on Steam, but I'll probably grab it regardless)

nice review, It really seems to lock you into agame / removes the outside world so to speak, I could not imagine playing something like Amnesia with it on. A logical next step would be a headset for sound and your all plugged in :)

Man, that just sounds so promising!
I really wish there was some good way to recapture a large portion of your 800 backers and $30k of funding, like a relaunched Kickstarter campaign for a somewhat smaller game? I'm not really sure. I know that alpha-funding can work for some, but it's pretty much like a Kickstarter, but continuously promoting without a break. Nobody can do that forever!
I do see that none of the reward tiers include gift keys to your past game (Brand), which is always a lovely enticement, and also reminds your new visitors that you already are a professional game development studio with a cool title already. If you choose to launch a Kickstarter to follow up this one, I suggest adding keys to your past games, if you can do so in a cost-effective way. Indies always forget to to do this! Also, it will give at least your Windows gaming fans something to play while waiting between releases of Wingmen :)
On another note... I wonder if any luck has been had trying to build Brand for Linux & Mac via Flibitijibibo's branch of MonoGame specially for porting XNA games... supposedly he's ported entire games in a matter of days with his MonoGame branch.

You may not be impressed with Erica Reed because the genre is not to your taste, but I've seen lots of pleased comments from people who do like that sort of game, so it makes sense that it finally got greenlit

At the moment that isn't possible, but it's something we'dwant to look at to try and make IndieCity easier and more flexible to use. I'm afraid I can't quite remember why (I think it's to do with the method by which authenticaton tokens etc. have to be acquired at the moment), but I can find out more next week to see how feasible that would be. :)

I understand the closed-source, DRM objections some people (including geek saint Richard M. Stallman) have with Steam for Linux, but as a lifelong gamer, grousing that I had to dual boot with (gak) Windows just to play games, I am pretty much delighted with Steam for Linux, so that I can play native Half-Life and Portal, Crusader Kings 2 (Europs Universalis IV will be released for Linux the same day it's released for Windows), Unity of Command, Team Fortress 2, Serious Sam 3, Kerbal Space Program, and many more. I've become a happy Linux gamer, and the future (including 2014's Kickstarted Wasteland 2 and Infinity Quest) looks blindingly bright.

Hi Hannah, I'm wondering if you could do so that the games using the extra features could actually be launched without the client (the extra features would be disabled in-game) ? This way I wouldn't be forced to use the client if the only thing I want to use IndieCity for is buying and installing the games.

I won't lie and say that it will be easy, especially after yesterday's catastrophe. But as long as we don't lose hope, there is still a chance that we can make it on Kickstarter. Should we fail there, we will be in a very precarious position as most of the team have been working for around two years with no salaries.BIlls have piled upand ressources have grown thin, but we won't give up the fight. There are no set plans ATM, since we prefer to concentrate our efforts on making the ickstarter happen, but should that fail the most likely scenario will look like an alpha funding.
As for portabilty, Unity3D is indeed very portable. When we made our tests, the longest part was to set Ubuntu with the pilots on my machine. Once that was done, Unity3d and Photon (a service pack with pluggins for Unity3D and cloud hosting servers) performed really well. We were instantly able to play cross-Platform games.
Thanks again for your support!

Valve is a cool company, without them Linux would still be leeching as much as it can off the Humble Bundle games this is a start, even if it's not one that you may like it pushes your platform forward. As for your reasoning for why Steam is bad, I don't agree with most of it, Steam is already available on the three major platforms, Steam has an offline mode but yes you still have to launch games through it. Unless you're desperate for resources or really paranoid from Valve screwing you over I don't see what the big deal is.
Also I'm REALLY excited for NS2, can't wait.

Well this is going far off the point of the article ;)
There is no issue for me, but for others the issue would be Steam's DRM and I have been quite open on my views on it, I don't mind it but I see why others might - Hence the need for DRM Free downloads too.
For me I use Linux because it's free and I can customize it however I see fit, I also tend to get better performance than Windows.

What is 'the issue' for you then ?
What does Linux represent to you, why do you use it ?
By Xodetaetl, 5 July 2013 at 11:21 am UTC
QuoteThis is why we ask developers if it's possible to get DRM Free downloads as well as Steam.Well that's great, and all I'm asking for !
QuotePersonally though for me it isn't much of an issue, especially since I don't see Linux going anywhere especially when it's free and open source anyone can pick it up, the issue for me isn't the OS at all.I don't understand.

That's where you're wrong. It's also - and mainly - a problem if you don't *like* that 'risk' (which, for me is a not a risk, it's a known issue, because I know I don't want to use Steam). You don't see it as a problem yourself because you are ok to tie yourself to Steam. But objectively it *is* a problem.
Games you would like to play exclusive to Windows, do you see it as a problem ? This is exactly the same thing.

I'm afraid at the moment it's still a couple of weeks away for gamers. We have the majority of the client and site set up ready and so I'm hoping to start contacting our current devs next week and also push out more details for other developers who want to get their stuff onto the site. We'll give people a week or so to get their stuff sorted before properly releasing to gamers. :)

I don't see it as a problem myself since when buying games from Steam I know full well I am taking the risk that if I move to a platform that doesn't have Steam then I can't play. It's only a problem if you don't understand that risk for me.
Until other platforms like Desura and IndieCity can have a bigger reach more people will do Steam Exclusives. Not many developers want to spread their games over many websites.

The main problem I find with Steam is that games are linked to the platform. That's the worst kind of DRM, it's almost as bad as games exclusive to Windows. It's strange to me that it's not obvious for you. Try to think of the future : what if you change for a system were your games could run fine, but Steam isn't available ? What if a better platform than Steam becomes available (like the open platform I'm working on...) and you'd like to switch ? What if you just don't want to run your games through a platform layer that is useless to you ?
You know... freedom. Steam is proprietary and it shows.
Oh I agree that it's a good thing to have Steam on Linux. At least it's better than not. But we who care about freedom and the future should work to prevent that games on Linux become Steam exclusives.

Ah, OK... I understand. Still a pity you were not aware at the beginning, but Kickstarters are always such volatile beasts, and it is reasonable. Yes, we are small still, but growing quickly! I hope you can be successful, against the odds, and welcome to our community! :D
It is true that not every project has a great success on our platform. On one hand, your countrymen with Tribute Games ported a game to Linux and hadn't enough success to justify continued Linux development (their game Wizorb), but in contrast, another studio in Canada, Gaslamp Games (their game, Dungeons of Dredmor), has had great success! It's a complex mix of the type of game itself coupled with your ability to cleverly market it.
It is my feeling that very small studios are best positioned to take a chance on us when they feel very good about the community and begin to connect with us, and when the threshold for portability is low. It seems that all the right signs line up for Wingmen! For the first (feeling & community), you've started off really well by selecting a beloved and under-served genre (space sim), and added-in something lacking widely on our platform, i.e., the competitive multi-player capabilities. We haven't many of that combination! In fact, I'm not even aware of one (someone will come correct me if I'm wrong, of course)
For the second, portability should be more possible due to your wise choice of a highly portable game engine.
Of course, at this point, you need to be funded first. We will do what we can :)
