Portal out of Beta, what's next for Valve's Linux titles?

I swear I read that the Valve team had confirmed (once, somewhere) that DOTA 2 was coming eventually. Perhaps I'm conflating that with something else, but I'll go try to dig that info up.

Updates! Armikrog is funded now, and Nelly Cootalot has acheived all stretch goals before the porting goal... standing at £16,695 out of the necessary £18,500 for native Mac/Linux ports. :D
Also, in the descriptive paragraph for OZombie, the Kickstarter URL is broken (though the URL from the graphic is fine).

Sad to see all those cancellations. :( I was really hoping to see Heavy Gear Assault. I would fund more stuff, but money has been tight these days. I think it's the same for everyone now. The entire world is going broke.

I sincerely hope that Left 4 Dead does get ported. It just wouldn't make sense to me for it not to get ported considering Valve's previous efforts. In addition, I think it would make most sense for Valve to release games in terms of their requirements i.e. games with higher requirements should be released later to benefit from newer graphics drivers.

Either way I didn't think in a million years I would be downloading games to play in Linux on Steam. I'm downloading Portal now. I bought Half Life 2 last month and love it.

I think Portal 2 is most likely the next goal -- though I kind of wish they would go for CS:GO, just as it's a newer iteration of the engine.
I have to say, I don't agree about your L4D comment. It would be silly for them not to port it considering the amount of people that still play it; not to mention it would end up being the only title they actively chose against porting it. I do, however, think it will be on the back burner -- much like I imagine HL:S and HLDM:S are.

Quoting: liamdaweI tend to forget about them really, mainly as no one else seems to really talk about them!None of them are even out for Mac, but neither were the Goldsrc titles when Valve started their Linux porting adventure. Porting those three titles to Linux would be a great gesture showing how commited they are, just like with the Goldsrc titles. Another way of showing that would be to port the Source SDK and modding tools. If they port the titles you mentioned and I mentioned + the SDK and modding tools they would basically have nothing left they even could port at all. Besides Half-Life Decay but that didn't even get a Windows release as it was console exclusive(PS2).

@Vandell like I outlined in my article the only reason it's at $90 is because of the Kickstarter where they chose to set Alpha/Beta as rewards.
They aren't bothered about people paying the $90 for Alpha right now, like I also outlined it will be $40 on release, which you can buy now from their store but, you could also buy nothing at all asnothing is forcing anyone to pay it.
If you keep thinking like you are you will just be missing out on a great game and that's a shame.

What in the world are you thinking? $90 for access to an unfinished game. I don't care how good you think it is, people won't pay for that on a mass scale.
You've made a huge mistake by setting early access at $90 on your Kickstarter; every media site that buys this game early to talk about it will inform their userbase of the price, and if they don't, users that get redirected wanting to buy your game will be met by a ninety dollar paywall! Imagine the fallout this would cause. Hell, that it already caused. 3.5k comments on your Steam-blog post of almost pure vitriolic hate.
Can't believe I was looking forward to this dreck, but I saw the problem early on with the $90 access when this was first Kickstart'd. You've lost respect from your community, and earned untold amounts of enmity from your potential customers in the tradeoff for increased backing. You've blown your one and only chance at the media-exposure boom.
It'd be best if you just stalled new purchases until release, or lower the price regardless of the feelings of your backers. Hell, all a backer wants is a good game and for the company to be successful.

Quoting: liamdawe@Mike Hense if you want people to beleive what you say it's usually a good idea to back up what you say, currently it's just words from a possible upset customer, something every company will have. You're 200% correct liamware... while i'm not an upset customer, i am a disappointed customer... (FACT1) i've had a Leadwerks license for 2 years.. i know Leadwerks and have seen it progress from a once bright light it was in the indie scene, to the desperate attempt for funding that is ( FACT2 ) the graphically devolved version of Leadwerks 2 that licensees are paying more for now... (FACT 3) The misleading exampleclips in the videos were ALL MADE BY LEADWERKS 2 DEVELOPERS, USING LEADWERKS 2... Leadwerks 3 is incapable of producing those graphics... (FACT4) Although promised that they would be fixed, there are still a substantial number of bugs remaining in Leadwerks 2... and with Leadwerks 3, Leadwerks For Steam, and now Leadwerks For Linux promised... what do you think are the chances these will be resolved... Hey, i could go on and on... but it would be better for you not to take my word for anything... but look on the forums... you'll see (if Josh hasn't deleted all of em yet) the posts about unresolved L2 bugs... there was even a post the other day from someone (a L3 licensee) that asked Josh to fix the significant bugs before moving onto anything else.... THESE PEOPLE PAYED FOR A LEADWERKS 3 LICENSE, AND SOON THEY'RE LIKELY GONNA BE FORCED TO PAY FOR AN UPDATE IN ORDER TO GET WHAT THEY SHOULD'VE GOTTEN IN THE ORIGINAL RELEASE... unless the Linux community decides to chip in and fund it for em... HEY, IT'S YOUR CHOICE... IT'S YOUR MONEY :)

While I also dislike the micro-transactions, it is still a fun game. My biggest gripe is the fixed window size (which is tiny).

It's ok, we don't have to continue the debate -- I just wanted to point out that it does exist, and that "exploration game" seems like a really descriptive name for games like Botanicula that have a very different feel than the non-myst "adventure games". The people who say "I loved Myst, but adventure games usually have too much of that stupid inventory and conversation stuff" should be able to say "I love exploration games" and have others know what they mean (and I would then recommend they try Botanicula, with a really high success rate ;) )
Really --I did run across some people like that on a non-game forum, and for a while was frustrated at their complete lack of interest in my adventure-kickstarter-of-the-month recommendations. Finally figured out they really like this exploration genre, and yes one of them had played Botanicula with great appreciation.

Perhaps we should make a separate forum thread for this very worthwhile topic where I can say that playing Botanicula most definitely felt like having an adventure to me? :D

Quoting: SpeedsterHahaha! Just watch me debate this categorization for Botanicula:I know I said I didn't want to derail the discussion further, but I wanted to make sure that my earlier comments weren't being misrepresented. I certainly won't deny that Botanicula is defined by its ambient and exploration qualities - in fact, when we did Botanicula for Game Club last year, I described it in the intro as a "point and click exploration game". I'd still group it with those other titles though (under whatever arbitrary category label you want to assign - perhaps "point-and-click adventure" isn't the right one, but it fits well enough for me) without including Myst or Trauma.
"Botanicula is point'n'click exploration game created by Jára Plachý and Amanita Design."
http://amanita-design.net/games/botanicula.html
That's what the DEVELOPERS of Botanicula call it, so I'm not just making this up. The emphasis is on solving puzzles while exploring unique surroundings and finding all the unique bug types, not on solving puzzles while enjoying a detailed plot like Monkey Island or Broken Sword.
I'm sure you can think of puzzle games that were also given a plot without generally being considered an adventure game, e.g. Corey Cole's Dr. Brain games, but those "puzzle games" did not feature this aspect of exploring a world full of non-puzzle-essential details -- "exploration game" seems a great fit to me.
Perhaps we should make a separate forum thread for this very worthwhile topic where I can say that playing Botanicula most definitely felt like having an adventure to me? :D
