Audiosurf Air music game (Audiosurf 2) is coming to Linux!

I can try in the future but a lot of my focus is sorting out the new design at the moment :)

Garrys Mod sandbox game may come to Linux!
By Cheeseness, 8 June 2013 at 12:08 pm UTC

It's been around for a few days, but I only spotted it last night. Garry's been talking on Twitter about how many Linux sales there have been. Interestingly, the Steam store still says that it's Windows/Mac only.

The Maker's Eden: Point & click adventure
By rustybroomhandle, 8 June 2013 at 8:21 am UTC

Hey!

It's a typical slideshow style adventure, where it's first person but you move from node to node. This is why we have gimmicked it up a bit to make the scenes less flat. There's kind-of sort-of an inventory system, but you won't be hauling items around, it's just there so you can carry and use items within an area or scene.

It's very dialogue-ish, and I guess also monologue-ish since we focus on the main character's inner-monologue a lot. To get the most out of it you'll be looking under every rock.

All mechanics in the game are such that they don't break the flow of the story, so puzzles won't be super difficult, just put there to add interaction. This does perhaps also mean that we don't have any way to artificially extend the length of the game, so it might be a bit shorter than some other games with the same amount of plot/story.

The Funding Crowd Goes Fourth (May 27th - Jun 3rd)

Hi bob, thanks for your contribution to the crowdfunding wiki. It's been the first one in a long time that wasn't submitted by me, I appreciated that! :D

Shame on me as I totally missed [Quintet](http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/carmine/quintet-for-android), although in my defense I must say that I wasn't systematically contacting campaign creators back then and that at the beginning they promoted it as an Android-only game.

I'm taking that your submission wasn't meant as an article but as a heads-up on the issue. But I'll be mentioning it for sure on the next Funding Crowd. ^_^

Humble Indie Bundle 8 adds 4 new games!

Yep, same.  Really pleased with this bundle!

The Maker's Eden: Point & click adventure
By s_d, 8 June 2013 at 6:07 am UTC

Oh yes, all over this one!

The adventure gaming community I belong to has also taken a look, and would like to know more about the setting and the specific graphic adventure gameplay mechanics you intend to employ in the game.  More story details would be welcome, also!  Will The Maker's Eden have an inventory system & inventory puzzles?  Or will it be entirely dialogue-focused (like a visual-novel)?

Thanks for bringing this project to us :)

Quoting: HamishYou do not want to oversell your case there s_d; icculus was awesome long, long before Humble Bundle came along, and so was MojoSetup by the way. Much of what you pointed to there is still the result of Loki and their free tools from well over a decade ago. Even Edward Rudd was there cranking out Penumbra and Amnesia for us back in the day, a good time before he became Humble Bundles porting go-to guy. I am not disputing that HIB has done a lot for us in the past, but we do not need to change history to justify it.

Yes, you're absolutely correct, and I see how what I wrote would be read that way. I, in no way, intended to credit HIB for the past accomplishments of their porting crew. I did identify them that way (as a group) because they work as a team and do assist each other from time to time. If I'm not mistaken, even their newest member, Ethan Lee, ported games before working with HIB (you may know better than I).

My point was that as awesome as each contributor was on their own, HIB was the first commercial entity in almost a decade to eagerly and consistently fund loads of great ports of third party titles, by seeking out the best porting experts as well as cool games with native ports ready to go. The increased exposure and credibility gained by our community was pretty dramatic. I suppose I should thank Transgaming and CrossOver, though I'm not really a fan of their methods... simply by staying in business they do show there is a market for paying customers of Linux & Mac games.

See, all you have to do is read the post exactly the way it was written in my brain, and then it all becomes clear, with history remaining intact! Easy, yes? :P

Quoting: Mike FrettBeen trying my best s_d, to spread the word about Linux. I just switched my brother over to Xubuntu...

I have about 3000 'friends' on Facebook that I constantly throw Linux articles at...

I also apologize for not knowing who you are, but I thank you for your work. I myself can't code and are too sick to learn but I do my best to add my library of Win Games to the WineDB, only a few so far, but hopefully I can get them all in their to help people know what's working. =)

WOW, dude, you're a hero!  That's fantastic stuff, and I should be thanking you.  Thank you!

Me?  I'm a nobody.  :)

There's absolutely nobody who should have ever heard of me, and when I did do something significant (I have my proud moments) I did so anonymously.  Back then, while I was still at University, I just wanted to be another part of the mythical cloud of Linux community awesomeness, to help the tech world have this feeling that "if a thing could be done, one of those random Linux folks would go post it to Slashdot, or put a patch up at Sourceforge".  Those were fun times!

In terms of gaming, I'm one of a number of folks that pre-ordered some RuneSoft stuff forever ago,  supported all of the Linux games I could (including Loki!), and other assorted things.  I've reported so many driver bugs to video adapter vendors...

Now, I'm trying to help make a niche of a niche be a solid as possible on Linux, but this game programming stuff is all new to me.  It's different than other systems programming and has all sorts of weird constraints.  It's interesting, though, and I'm learning a lot!

Audiosurf Air music game (Audiosurf 2) is coming to Linux!
By s_d, 8 June 2013 at 4:24 am UTC

Liam, you could round up certain things (like a number of new Unity3D releases) into a digest-style feature, like once per week or so, if a number of the projects don't have a strong proponent in the community here.  That way, each new game at least gets a mention, and specific projects we feel particularly excited for, can be fully featured with a dedicated article (like you and RTS's, or myself and graphic adventures).

Nuclear Dawn is still coming to Linux oh yes!
By Sabun, 7 June 2013 at 6:25 am UTC

They probably need L4D2 to be finished so they have a reference point for porting their game. Whether or not they have the entire access to L4D2 code or not, I don't know. However, I'm sure they have some access to the game's coding (enough to necessitate waiting on its final release).

Quoting: AnonymousYou do not need Windows to extract the Adventure Game Studio games - they are all Inno Setup archives (at least they were the last time I looked) which can be extracted with http://constexpr.org/innoextract/ on Linux. Just call innoextract on the .exe file.

Thanks for the tip! I've duly updated the article to include your advice.

And I've also added to the article the new Amazon.com Indie Games section and its inaugural discounts. Don't miss the opportunity to check them out!

@abelthorne Yup, it's a Source Engine. I don't know if they're helping valve with L4D2, I doubt it. Game looks good though =)

I'm curious as to why they mention L4D2. Is the game based on it or Source SDK? or the developer porting Nuclear Dawn to Linux is also working for Valve on porting L4D2 (and thus needs to finish working on L4D2 before ND)?

loved the original when I was still on windows, got most fun out of old classics... "don't fear the reaper" springs to mind, but had a really hard time to get it to work in wine so sort of gave up, wonder how it works after so many years....   nope still useless

Quoting: s_dThe porting crew at Humble have done so much publicly, with open-source engines, tools, and other goodies, that they have made it easier for all Linux devs to port and distribute games.  Heck, for the indies I'm working with, I'll be packaging up their Linux games using MojoSetup, by icculus himself!

QuoteRumour says that a new Groupees bundle, of the Build a Bundle sort, will be launched next week.
Oh man, this is exactly what I wanted to hear! :D
So much game saving bundles, and it isn't even the Steam Summer sale time of the year yet. It's really cool to start seeing Linux games appear in bundles besides the Humble Bundle (e.g Groupees, BundleStars).

On a side note, HB8 adding more games was unexpected. I made a bit of gameplay of Intrusion 2, it really reminds me of the Metal Slug series. Pretty awesome stuff :)

QuoteIt's been years since I worked any direct advocacy;  in the past decade I quit with the zealotry and convincing others to give Linux a try, mostly because it didn't work.
Boy, do I know that feeling. Back in 2010-2011, I was really pumped trying to get my peers into Linux. Sadly, after short trials most of them went back to Windows. At the very least though, they now know that Linux and Ubuntu exist :)

I happen to like this font, so I've tried stretching the question marks to make them less mistakable with exclamation marks. Much better now, right?
