Drifter space trading game coming to Linux!
By s_d, 3 June 2013 at 4:34 pm UTC

Quoting: Mike FrettThis is what I like, a simple but effective Space game. Non-cluttered UI and Sand-boxed.

Yeah, actually the final UI design is going to be even cooler;  one of the stretch goals was to bring on a pro UI designer.  He's the guy that designed the logo and the promotional poster (which are all pretty cool, very clean & minimalist without looking lazy).

I'm pretty excited to play this!

QuoteGuys remember not to buy until it comes to Linux.
I made the mistake of buying it before it was released... :/
As soon as I saw the news it was coming to Linux a couple of months back, I bought it immediately thinking it was right around the corner. Wish there was a way I could let Steam know which platform my purchase counts for, like in the Humble Bundles. Thanks for the reminder Strider, I've got to be more careful in the future.

Jesus, I want to like games that release as Alpha and improve, but sometimes I think they shoot themselves in the foot. The video you linked to was like proof that I'll just be frustrated by how alpha this game is. Maybe later in the cycle, I'll have another look.

This is what I like, a simple but effective Space game. Non-cluttered UI and Sand-boxed. I'm totally there, but life is short and I wish we could have this before the end of Summer heh. I tried the X3 Series, just too complex for me; my brother loves it though.

Steam's May Hardware Survey is out!
By berarma, 3 June 2013 at 7:38 am UTC

Quoting: Anonymous
Quoting: HamishIf such a thing did exist I would not be surprised if Linux had a far greater share, not necessarily because Desura has more Linux users, but most likely a greater proportion in comparison to Windows ones. If you truly would like to see one, feel free to suggest it on their forums - they have a place for suggestions just like these.
They have :
http://www.desura.com/members/online

Linux has slightly more than 1% of the share.

Regards,

That's users online in the web, and there's an Unknown platform with ~1300 users. It's hard to know how accurate these statistics are.

Steam's May Hardware Survey is out!

Quoting: SimmyDI dont really get the boycotting of Steam.  I am a long time linux user and i LOVE steam.  My OS is open and controllable but the applications i run on it i am not massively fussed about.

Sure if steam came out and said "you MUST use this kernel which we have added to but you dont know what it is" that would be a different story.  But they are not.

Since Steam has come to linux we have seen a HUGE surge of games coming over.  That can only be a good thing.

I wouldn't talk about a boycott but rather users not willing to agree with their licensing terms. I haven't been able to try Steam yet, and that's because they've made it ridiculously hard to install in some distributions. Still, when I can try it I don't think I will want to agree to their terms and we're free to do so. I don't think Steam is a bad thing, for me it's Valve ruling people out in the ways I've just described.

Steam's May Hardware Survey is out!

Quoting: berarmaFor me, this statistics could be seen as Valve's success/failure to sell his services to a certain kind of user that may prefer using DRM-free services like Desura or HIB.

Both of which often cater to Steam, but anyway...

GNU/Linux wasn't built with statistics success in mind, and that's why it is the way it is and I like that. Steam is against what GNU/Linux users usually want in a computer, control, so it would be no surprise that some don't want it. Besides, Valve hasn't made it easy to install their client on any distribution, Debian users can't install it easily yet. For me, this statistics could be seen as Valve's success/failure to sell his services to a certain kind of user that may prefer using DRM-free services like Desura or HIB.

IMHO, these statistics are very unstable right now. There probably will be up & down until we have more games (especially AAA titles). I believe that steam statistic is based on play time, if it true that good Humble Indie Bundle probably means positive impact to numbers.

Steam's May Hardware Survey is out!
By Xodetaetl, 2 June 2013 at 9:11 am UTC

If you want satisfying Linux stats, check the worldwide OS stats from StatCounter.

Tiny but steady growth since january from 0.84% (december) to 1.31% (may). Which corresponds to the launch of Steam's open beta (december).

And if you check previous data, it's been in the 0.7-0.8% for years. (november 2010 to may 2012
So this is really significant.

If more than just the three of us are backing this one, plz drop by the comment thread to let people know you're a Linux-based fan -- seems like this one is not getting as much interest from Linux crowd as other adventures despite never threatening to relegate us to stretch goal (What, don't you guys like off-the-wall humor and crazy art in adventure games?)

Quoting: psychoticmeowOf course it may not work, as Linux users are probably out to prove a point.

Which is why there is always a stream of arguments whenever one of these surveys comes out. Personally, as someone outside of this particular spectacle, I am finding all this fidgeting about a smidgen of a percent to be kind of annoying. I know some developers take this survey very seriously, but still, arguing with the numbers every month is not going to change the results.
I would be glad to see Desura surveys

We could come up with our own survey, but the trick would be seeding it somewhere platform neutral (not here) so that we get the best sample we can. Of course it may not work, as Linux users are probably out to prove a point.

I got the survey for the first time, ever, during the linux beta - been a steam user since 2005'sh, actively since early 2012 (on Windows). So yeah, these stats are skewed beyond belief. They're a sampling of a sampling, of a tiny sampling. I can't see how they're useful as is.

Steam's May Hardware Survey is out!
By psychoticmeow, 1 June 2013 at 4:49 pm UTC

I got surveyed this time around.

I'd take these statistics with a grain of salt, not just as a measure of Linux gamers, but as a measure of Steam users. They have not published any of the methodology behind the survey, not just including how they round numbers. There may be flaws that are not so obvious.

I kind of wish the stats where in real time, although most people would consider that a violation of privacy.

Expeditions: Conquistador turn based strategy RPG released for Linux!
By Mike Frett, 1 June 2013 at 11:49 am UTC

Steam lists Ubuntu 13.04 as the minimum requirement. The Steam page lists DirectX as a requirement for Linux. So I can't be bothered with this game until they clear the confusion. Any of you using 12.04 with this game?.

It would also be devastating to the Steam box which runs on 12.04. The Video card requirements make no sense either. As a 240GT is faster than a 4870 and they list the 280. I myself having a 6670, which is faster than a 4870 and on par with a 240GT. Anymore info on what this game really runs on?.

Edit: There seems to also be a video card overheating issue from the forums. Guess I'll wait a few months.
