Magic news. I've pledged to this one. As you say, quite a unique game and definitely worth a look, even if it's not your normal "thing".

Thank you very much for the clarification. Therefore when a key is banned, only the network play is affected. Right?
Be careful with the forum thread about key thieves. I got the wrong impressions there.

Quoting: ManuTOOEdgar,
there's no online activation, nor requirement for an Internet connection to play, but when you buy a copy you should not run the game on 2 PCs at the same time per EULA instruction (you can install on several PCs without problem, though).

If you're on 64bit, you'll probably need the ia32libs installed. Fixed it for me. Fun game!

Hahaha, the Be Mine 8 mystery game tactic they've employed really made me chuckle. Love the idea, even if it's not a Linux game. HumbleBundle 8 is awesome in my opinion, love Hotline Miami. Thanks for continuing my favourite corner muntdefems :P
View video on youtube.com
The DRM-Free version of Hotline Miami works pretty smoothly on Ubuntu 13.04. It actually works better than the Windows one (Windows-version crashes constantly and won't stretch to my entire screen resolution). So far Awesomenauts still has some issues. Can't join others because the game will crash. Can play practice modes though. For the Be Mine 8 bundle, most of the games work in Wine no problem from my testing which is pretty cool. Ah, so many games and so little time.

The demo looks good, but from what I read in the forums it seems to be using a draconian DRM system. Requires an online connection to play and your key is banned if used twice at a time. Can anyone confirm it please? I would love to be wrong.

And from Cheese's website, this also relevant : http://cheesetalks.twolofbees.com/linuxStretchGoals.php. This article talks about why launching linux as a stretch goal is often a bad idea. But not as bad as launching on other platforms first, then launching for linux at a later date.
That's also why I tend to avoid iPhone hand-me-downs that appear in the Play Store. Some developers get it right, but more often than not, those titles are poorly ported, buggy, ad-ridden shadows of their iDevice counterparts. And who wants that?

The Ubuntu Software Centre downloads for paid apps are very low, so getting 100 users from that alone might be challenging. But the success of the Humble Indie Bundle would point to hundreds of thousands of linux users willing to support their platforms (source : http://cheesetalks.twolofbees.com/humble/
For what its worth, I only kickstart projects that have linux support AND as a non-stretch goal. Although early days, I did support some projects that were linux-as-stretch. It's good to see that this approach is becoming fairly rare.

Hi everyone,
I am the developer behind the #5 game on this list: Dungeon of Elements.
We would really like to add Linux support, and frankly, I'd much prefer adding it before a stretch goal. I always feel like it is weird having new platforms as a stretch goal. You're asking people who want that platform to take a big risk, and you're asking people who already backed to get excited about something that doesn't affect them. Its weird.
The real question for us is whether doing a Linux build will add enough people for us to recoup our costs. Frogdice is a small indie studio, and we have to be careful and efficient with our time.
Do you all think it is possible that we could add 100 or more Linux gamers if we added a Linux build option?
How would we get the word out so Linux gamers would know about it? We have a hard enough time getting the word out to PC gamers!
Dungeon of Elements is really a delightful, fun game that we are extremely proud of. It was overwhelmingly loved at PAX East, but we didn't have our KS going yet.
What do you all think?
Thanks,

I don't think so, really. Well, that it's weird, anyway. I'll not weigh-in on whether or not they are games, as I don't believe that can be answered, I don't care, and it doesn't matter anyway. It's not particularly weird because all sorts of bizarre things have been added to bundles, from tech-demos to prototypes to feature-length films ( "Indie Game: The Movie" ). And then, of course, there's Osada, which was weird as hell, but I did enjoy playing with it as an interactive toy :D

Actually, never mind. The two Book of Unwritten Tales games are on GOG, so they probably don't do DRM-free Linux releases for some other reason. We probably need to convince them that it's worth selling through Desura or Humble, or it may not happen.

It could theoretically be entirely built on Unity3D version 3.5, and use a number of 3.5-only plugins (like the popular EZ GUI, which was the reason for a lot of up-front engineering cost in porting Akaneiro to version 4.0). In such a case, the functionality provided by the plugins would require effort to replace.
If we ask the right questions to the right people, we might be able to get a technical answer like that. I wish devs could be more forthcoming with specifics. Certainly it does open them up to criticism about implementation details, but it also garners a great deal of respect in our community.
Openness is something that the indie dev community benefits from, overall, and it is taking an extraordinary amount of time for them to adopt it. At the same time, I'm seeing these windows into their world open up, in large part due to crowd-funding backer relations.
These are exciting and often frustrating times for us :)

Yeah, well, we should keep in mind that Mojang picked Unity back before it had any pretensions of actually supporting Linux, so we should not be surprised that to them Linux is something which is still only nice to do. That being said, not being part of the beta is not something we can really hold against them that much.

Already owned most of these from either my own earlier purchases from my Windows days, or from Steam for Ubuntu launching. I still threw $25 for Little Inferno and Thomas Was Alone, just slanted it mostly towards charity instead of the devs.
Sadly, Little Inferno doesn't install on Steam. Hopefully they'll rectify that soon.
Weird to see Proteus and Dear Esther in the bundle though, as they're both odd non-games in a way. More interactive experiences both of them. It's good really, because I don't think Dear Esther was worth the money I paid for it originally, so this is a good deal for the curious.

Looking forward to this port though, I really enjoyed the first two games (and I didn't actually know there was a third).

I already owned Hotline Miami and completed it, but I don't mind paying again to be honest.
Capsized, I've only played about 10 minutes of it, but it's a pretty fun action platformer with some physics puzzles thrown in -- it was also something that I was hoping to get a Linux port when I first saw the release trailer.
I think the "big" one here is Awesomenauts -- seeing as how Simon Lane (Honeydew, Yogscast) voiced one of the characters and Total Biscuit has covered it a *lot*. It's nothing special for me, I prefer engrossing stories to arcade action; but the port, on the surface, seems well done.
Thomas was Alone was also covered by Nerd3 and got me interested, though I'm not sure how long that will last.
The rest are "meh" for me, Little Inferno came too late as I already beat it in Wine a few months ago and Proteus and Dear Esther are just not really my sort of games. Though I am sure to play them at some point (I didn't know what Proteus was until I launched it).

Runesoft does not talk about sales. But according to stats, Robin Hood was very succesfull, Northland was somewhat successfull also.
Airline Tycoon & Jack Keane were not.
They sell more games on Desura than Ubuntu Software Center, and not quite a bit !
Desura is definitely becoming a true alternative to retail channels and Steam.
