Tripwire on why Red Orchestra 2 and Rising storm won't come to Linux just yet
By Kristian, 26 May 2013 at 9:35 am UTC

Wow, this bit could potentially be huge: "Newer builds of UE 3 have Linux/Mac support however they are greatly different from our build."

Linux officialy supported by Epic (again)? How come we haven't heard about this until now? Can anyone get any other dev team to verify this?

Edit:

What I mean is couldn't they just be talking about the OpenGL support that comes with the official Mac OSX version? That is not quite Linux support.

Heavy Gear Assault heading to Linux

While there is a still insufficient data for a projection the trend for this is actually down. Now it is at 18% instead of 21%. Hardly a cause for optimism. As for why I filter using Kicktraq? That has to do with my personality type and wanting to avoid disappointments in my life. I don't want to waste time and energy getting excited about a Kickstarter campaign and following it, reading updates, etc only for it to fail.

Hotline Miami Linux beta is now out on Steam!
By Rutger, 24 May 2013 at 8:16 pm UTC

As you might have noticed, there's a new build on steam. Not only should the blackscreen been fixed and improved performance, we enabled support to use your old windows save game on linux.
1. Delete your current linux save game (SaveData.sav, either in XDG_DATA_HOME/HotlineMiami or ~/.local/share/HotlineMiami),
2. Copy saves.dat to the forum where Hotline Miami is installed(in steam, properties, browse local files)
3. Start Hotline Miami

Quoting: redstar427I am curious is you bumped your Planetary Annihilation up to Alpha, as it will start in 2 weeks.  Of course, probably Alpha will only be multiplayer because I think the AI won't be done to play against the computer until Beta.
Afraid not, I really wish I could but I'm totally broke so I am afraid GOL won't do much covering until it hits Beta unless some rich patron chucks us $30 to upgrade to the Alpha :P
I backed at an alpha tier. I can probably write some words about it when it's up and about ^_^
Already have someone donating $30 to bump me up, gave them a shout out on the twitter feed :)

Yeah, icculus didn't make any promises. Is it really fair to get cranky because he said he'd like to be able to do something?

Back on topic, I had some brief correspondence with Simon yesterday morning about the Linux beta (which isn't up yet), asking whether they were planning to do 32 bit builds in addition to 64 bit (the earlier engine tests were 64 bit only). Sounds like that's not likely to happen, but we'll see how it goes.

I have no idea how many 32 bit users there are amongst GOL readership, but with Steam supporting 32 bit, I imagine there are still plenty around the broader Linux gaming community.

Here, the issue is desura pointing directly to the exe, when it should point to a file like this https://www.dropbox.com/s/slcwg2uqxdjw7rx/wyvandkeep (which doesn't exist) here is mine I made for a tar.gz I sent them.

Downloading Desura version now so I can check what's going on. It may be something typed in wrong on the desura_launch_Play.sh

Desura to more clearly label third-party DRM
By Liam Dawe, 24 May 2013 at 2:58 pm UTC

Good, I am glad they are taking that small but useful step it's not much to ask after all really now is it to list if a product has DRM.

I have been waiting on this new design for quite some time now since Scott first told me about it, I really hope it works better as Desura's current home page is awful, personally I think their Games Page serves as a better home page than their current one.

While we are at it, I hate their comment system with the weird tree view with comments all out of place, I much prefer the standard one after the other.

Yes, this is what I was talking about. It significantly worsens the experience.

Heavy Gear Assault heading to Linux
By Cheeseness, 23 May 2013 at 9:53 pm UTC

Quoting: KristianPersonally I use Kicktraq as a filter for what Kickstarter projects I back. I back DRM free games with Linux support, a strong concept, (typically) people with a good track record behind it and a Kicktraq trend (or preferably projection) that gives me hope that it will make it. So far that system has served me really well.

Whilst your other measures are great, using Kicktraq like that is probably steering you away from projects that you might otherwise be interested in supporting. Since you don't get charged for campaigns that don't reach funding, there's not really anything to lose from backing a project that you want to support which has its future in question.

It's also not a very scalable attitude - if everybody took that approach, crowdfunding wouldn't work, as it's about getting people who like an idea to say that they like it and would support it if enough other people did as well :)

Quoting: KristianThe Heavy Gear kickstarter won't make it. It is only trending towards 21%. So it is irrelevant for Linux gaming since it is irrelevant in general.
Kicktraq's trends are not projections, and don't take into account any of the dynamics of crowdfunding. They even state in their own blog that trends should be taken "with a grain of salt".

Their projection cones give a slightly better idea of possibility space, but since this campaign is only a couple of days old, there's not enough data to calculate those.

Yes I know that, but it IS an early indication and I know of no example of any game that has had the required turnaround to make it after such an extremely weak start and there is nothing about the project that makes me believe otherwise. It is only at 2% of the funds gathered with almost 10% of the time passed. Somehow I don't see this project suddenly increase its pledge rate per day to the fivefold of what it is currently.

Given the initial data, the concept involved and what we have seen with other similar Kickstarter campaigns I am more than comfortable with pronouncing doom over the Heavy Gear Assault kickstarter campaign. There is no industry heavy weight behind it, there is no real press coverage, etc

Well, that sucks then. I understand the reasoning though, and Tripwire has done much to support Linux - but UE3 was obviously quite prohibitive to the task of porting to Linux for all devs using it.

i was impatient also to be honest (i was kind a expecting ~5 sec loading times from game like that), but i alt+tabbed the game and started to look for the issues from google and when i checked back the loading was done and i could start shooting the bastards :)
i measured the time it takes for me. its exactly 40 sec every time.
that still might be some sort of bug

Quoting: Xpanderbtw whats the issue with paranautical activity?

it works out of the box for me (the level loading time is pretty big though, like 30 sec or so, its like in frozen state for a while)

OMG, you're right! I'm just too impatient, you see... although it was more like a whole minute for me, but it loaded the level at the end. :D
I kinda assumed that after the first screen (the 'Start' or 'Quit' one) there would be another one with more options and stuff.

I'm editing the article right now and I'll hop off to the Desura forums to say that everything's OK right afterwards.
