Humble Double Fine Bundle launches, we were right!

The over 8 GB download is also a little bit daunting.

Quoting: Hamish
Quoting: SpeedsterStacking is very charming -- assuming I get around to the huge Brutal Legend download one of these days, I wish I had paid more for the bundle... but did have Psychonauts already and wasn't so sure about Costume Quest.

Well, if you really want to you can up how much you give after you have payed - just go to the page provided by your Humble key and play with the slider.

Thanks, I never noticed the increase payment option. More than doubled it: assuming good things about Brutal Legend, though I haven't bothered to download it while still playing Stacking ;)

Quoting: scaineAh - update. You have to opt-out of the beta, then type-in 'HLM' to the code, which re-introduces the "private beta" branch. Opt-back in and you're good. 180Mb download, then play.

Yep, just got that :)

Unfortunately, I have sound, but no video -- just a black screen :(

Heavy Gear Assault heading to Linux

As soon as I read Unreal Engine 4, I thought there had to be a mistake. Highly unlikely that Unreal would support a platform yet stay quiet about it (especially with the Unity devs flaunting their multi-platform prowess). I'd say there isn't enough information out in the open to warrant our trust that there will be a Linux version.

well tbh I think its gone be browser based, if not then the other option will be UE4 supports linux (did we miss that) or they gone custom port it (not on a kickstarter budget I think)

I did contact them prior to adding the game to the wiki and they replied this to me:

Quoting: "Stompy Bot Productions"UE3 actually did support Linux but not many licensees took advantage of that. UE4 will support OpenGL and we plan to take full advantage of that with HGA!

Yep - now appears, no password prompt, but when you hit "Play" it says "missing executable". Strangely, some debian folks on the Steam mailing list claim it's working fine, so perhaps a package just needs to replicate through Valve's CDN worldwide.

I have messaged them to clarify the Linux support, will update the article if they respond.

You need to make it executable, right click -> properties -> check allow executing file as program.

They really need to improve that dialog box to just tell you that at least.

The password doesn't work, but the BETA drop down has also been removed and the game appears on my list of installable Linux games. However, the actual files appear to be missing (no disk usage value).

Still, progress... 8-)

Steam's April hardware survey shows poor Linux statistics!

Quoting: HamishI have a more academic question - what actually attracted you to this website? I am not asking to try and dispute your complaint by this, but I am genuinely curious why someone would go onto a website that honestly believes in Linux games just so you can try and write them off. You are entitled to express that opinion, but I am a bit at a loss why you bothered to be here in the first place.
Its going to either be a user who got frustrated or a troll...

Either way World of Goo is one of the games that I have truly never had a problem with.

Quoting: Hayward...seriously stay away from any linux distro if you want to play decent games.  Don't blame linux though, blame windows and the lazy developers who either can't be bothered to port or do a piss poor job if they do..

But if you stay away, you won't find (as you haven't) those developers who do do decent ports. Is it possible that your steady stream of negative experiences might be caused by something at your end? The number of us who have been having positive Linux gaming experiences should hopefully be cause for at least considering that things might not be as bad as you seem to think.

By the way, World of Goo has run solidly for me in Linux since it became available for Linux in early 2009 ^_^

I find playing games on linux is a complete waste of time.  The ports are always buggy, sound and graphic issues are guaranteed.  Even tried my steam games that are supposedly linux compatible, but no luck again (even a simple game like Goo wouldn't load up properly).  So now I use linux because it stops me playing games and wasting my time, seriously stay away from any linux distro if you want to play decent games.  Don't blame linux though, blame windows and the lazy developers who either can't be bothered to port or do a piss poor job if they do..

Yep, not installable on Steam here either. Opt-in to beta seems okay, but there's no "install" button and if I right click on the title and choose "install game" from there, I get an error that it's not available for the platform.

Great news, indeed.
I hope I'll be able to continue from the existing save games (Windows).
It's annoying if you have to start from scratch.
Unfortunately, my experience - so far - is that all games required me
to start all over again, when a Steam Linux version appears.
That's not what I expected from the Steam Cloud option. :/

Quoting: berarmaI don't like the paying model, I think it's paying for progressing in the game, that's the only downfall so far.

Well, no F2P models are really very good.  You essentially have "pay-to-win" and "pay-or-grind".  The former is distasteful to the extent of being, in my opinion, Bad For Games(TM).  The latter is the only viable one, while somewhat annoying, though I wonder about it's sustainability.  In this case, you grind for karma gems, and upon earning enough, you unlock new areas (ostensibly, advancing the story).  Alternately, you pay real currency (for gems?) and advance more quickly, but without levelling more quickly (though, buying better gear & skills may help with that as well, but with level caps, the "pay-to-win" is, I believe, totally nerfed).

The problem, which is not one for us gamers, is that the heaviest users of the service, grinding players on a tighter budget, are also contributing the least funds.  Users interested in progressing more rapidly, by dodging the grind, are the ones that actually support the studio.  There must be some kind of tricky balance here, which, if upset, makes the game a financial disaster.  I assume there will be loads of DLC's, as time goes, to entice players.

I wish that the install/play experience was more homogenous;  there's clearly a wide variety of experiences, ranging from my flawless one to Liam's great annoyance (for example).  The game is a lot of fun (in the ARPG formula of "click, click, loot, yeah!" which Torchlight nailed so well), and for my part, I'm happy to have supported it.

That said, I see myself firing up my main Gentoo rig in a month or so when my home office is ready, doing my "emerge world", only to find Akaneiro completely broken & join the grumpy camp! :P

Quoting: berarmaI'm amazed at the number of new games getting fullscreen right. Multimedia controls, Alt-Tab switch, activities overview, all working. Same with the Double Fine titles.

Not with Psychonauts they don't. Still, do these titles use SDL2? I had heard that it has a lot of those kinds of fixes.

I haven't tried the latest Psychonauts update just yet, and yes, the other Double Fine games use SDL2. The other games getting it right are usually Unity3D games, like this one. Something so obvious but it never worked well on most games.
