Hairy Tales has been released for Linux
By s_d, 16 May 2013 at 5:10 pm UTC

sigh

You've nailed it.  I have several ideas lined up, and no time as well.  I had to hand one off (who knows what will come of it).  :(

In any case, between the review, heavy maintenance of the crowd-funding wiki and two new columns, you're seriously the hero of the day, muntdefems!  :D

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is now in Open Beta for Linux!
By s_d, 16 May 2013 at 4:10 pm UTC

Interesting results...  I had none of these issues whatsoever.  I tested on my base-level Linux game testing machine (i.e., laptop w/integrated Intel graphics, 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04LTS).  It's no speed demon by any stretch, but it is great for testing game functionality for the "average user", for the purpose of reviews and performance analysis.  Sadly, my nice workstation with a real video card is in pieces awaiting Yet Another Home Office Shuffle :)

I installed the launcher/torrent-client as instructed in the closed beta, successfully downloaded the game, and launched the downloaded game via the launcher.  There is a lag at launch with a dark screen in which I wondered whether or not I'd hung, but became used to it.  It's not nearly as long as the lag/hang launching games in Steam (I have only played TF2 and The Cave in Steam), but it is noticeable.

For me, the game plays very well, even in full-screen, without any artifacts, frame drops, crashes, or other issues.  The "register" button also does absolutely nothing for me.  I have been using the account issued to me in the closed beta.  Some direction regarding new user registration would be warranted.

Quoting: Ba7a7chywhat do I do after installation is finished ? the usual chmod and run ?

Once the game is downloaded from the client, the launcher has a "play" button in the bottom right corner.  You click it to begin the game.

Well, to be honest it is beyond my abilities at the moment, which is why I have not been doing it lately. So you feel free to keep the seat warm for me. ;)

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is now in Open Beta for Linux!
By Liam Dawe, 16 May 2013 at 3:12 pm UTC

I am a bit shocked at this being turned into an open beta with such glaring issues. I too had to switch to transmission fromqbittorrent to get the data to download, just popped it in the folder after and it seems to work, i get to tge login screen at least.

Considering its reported already by you i am surprised they still opened it, not a good impression.

The register button on the Login screen also does nothing *sigh*, such poor Q&A must have been done on it, I have reported this as well.

I informed them of the Ubuntu 13.04 crashes on the closed beta stage, this is a great idea to download using another bittorent, what do I do after installation is finished ? the usual chmod and run ?

Hey, sorry it took me so long to find this, been busy and I did not realize it was a review. All and all it is a pretty respectable write-up, if not quite as verbose as mine. Take that as a compliment if you like. ;)

I would like to get another review done myself, but I have been having an extremely difficult time of it since the turn of the year and have lacked the energy (my gaming has even been fairly anemic). Still, I am currently replaying a certain game in preparation for giving it a write-up, so we will see how it goes. :|

Quoting: OrkultusThis looks interesting. I will have to def check that out. I also found a beta release for another game that looks interesting!. http://www.verdungame.com/ :D

Actually, Verdun probably deserves it's own article.  It's a Unity3D engine MMOFPS featuring 4-player squads, set in the WWI era, specifically the Battle of Verdun (hence the name).  It's not immediately apparent to me exactly how they plan to monetize it (direct sales, F2P, subscriptions?), so there are some unknowns, but otherwise, for fans of historical FPS, it might be quite a treat.

Their beta site:  http://beta.verdungame.com/
The direct beta link is (currently): http://beta.verdungame.com/builds/StandaloneLinux.zip

There are beta forums, also:  http://forum.verdungame.com/viewforum.php?f=23

Haha!  And you wrote and posted this whilst I was half-finished with my version of the article!

This is precisely the project I was thinking about in our e-mail correspondence about promoting specific crowd-funded games.

I can't say I'm unhappy, though!  Life of Pixel looks & feels like a playable piece of video gaming history, and I dearly hope it succeeds.

if a project has Linux as a stretch goal I will not even consider it until it has reached that amount. Kind of defeats the purpose I'd say. on an unrelated note, the prove you are a human game doesn't work under chrome for Android.

By Cheeseness, 13 May 2013 at 9:17 pm UTC

A few have already. Aside from supportive feedback from the developers who provided quotes, I've also received at least one email (haven't got time to get through them all this morning) from a prospective crowdfunding campaign organiser who wrote to say it was of benefit to them. :D

Thanks for the feedback Bumadar. I hope that muntdefems continues with the regular crowdfunding roundup thing. I think it's really positive.

Ray's the Dead a new zombie game heading to Linux!
By muntdefems, 13 May 2013 at 5:36 pm UTC

Hi Chris,

Fair enough, I understand your reasons, but still I think it could be quite a letdown for Linux backers if eventually they don't get the game released on this platform on day 1, specially if they pledged believing so.

I'm not really sure a Linux export is as easy as I said with Unity 4, I just remember somebody saying something along these lines, and complaining that because of this some developers just distribute what Unity spits at them, without even testing it.

I hope this is the case for Ray's the Dead (the exporting ease, not the lazy distribution :P) so there's a Linux version on the first day and this discussion about announcing stretch goals or not is rendered purely academical. ^_^

Cheese Talks: Linux As A Stretch Goal

quiet a good article, different OS as a stretch goal is simply not smart, it basicly means that people on a supported OS are putting in money for another OS after which people for the second OS will start funding.... tis wrong :)

Talking for me personally, at the start of it all (double fine) I supported projects that had Linux as a stretch goal, but by now even if I like something I will not support it from the start if there is no Linux support from the start.  I might return to the project at a later date to see if it reached Linux but I might simply forget and thus not fund it.

The article by muntdefems is good in helping to see who has Linux from the start and thus who to support.
