Inxile got a free license for Unigine for Wasteland 2 but went with Unity due to better tools. Makes me think that Unigines pricing isn't the only downside.

One of you was talking about all of Valves games being released, problem is we have all played those. Another problem are the Indie devs, they seem to be stuck on Pixel Art games and Puzzles and I wish they would vary their library.
Let's not forget also, all those beautiful Kickstarter games that have yet to trickle in. I think we've only seen the tip of the needle so far. And like the article says, their are some good engines out there, but I think devs are having a hard time putting together teams for the Linux platform. We need to show more vocal and financial support to these awesome guys and gals.

Quite frankly? I'd rather see the percentage of GNU/Linux users rival Mac. Just that. No more, no less. A few AAA titles every now and then behind the main Windows releases, and people who are WILLING to switch. For reasons OTHER than just one overhyped game.

Quoting: BumadarI just thought: If Valve would release Half Life 3 say 3 months earlier on Linux ...... then you would see a Steam/Linux increase you could only dream off... That would plummet within weeks/months, and would soon show to be a bunch of whiners who switched ONLY for that, who don't give a hoot about any kind of value the average current GNU/Linux user has, who don't want to learn the specificities of the OS and want it to run and do things exactly as Windows does, who'd want an immediate and easy way of pirating the game, and who'd switch back to Windows as soon as they're done.

steam stats shows about 3-5M logged in at the same time. Id say that is about 20-30% of total steam users.
Lets say there are 20M total users (probably more)
Well 2% of 20M is 400k. Lets say only a 10% (probably more for the first games coming) of that people is willing to buy an AAA game. I payed 50€ for my last AAA game. Thats 2M€. Not too bad for making a port.
I payed for 3 AAA games in the last 10 years. It would had probably bought more games if they were for linux
I kina see your point tho... until steam make it happen, to gain more base, it will be hard

Quoting: Bumadarn30p1r4t3,
As for why don't the others join, well why would they ? Steam right now is showing them that its just a small 1-2% in users and thus an even smaller % in buyers, so as long as that does not change then there is no need for them to port over their engines to a much less uniform platform then windows and Mac.
What linux basicly needs to get big in gaming is what consoles have, a AAA title just for that platform, something people will switch over for, right now every commercial big title coming to linux will have a Windows and/or Mac release before or at the same time, so why would Windows gamers switch over ?

So cost is the biggest thing holding unigine back. Interesting.
My views on unity come from my personal preference for games and their appearance. I am a graphics freak, and no, good graphics don't make a good game, but it helps. I guess from what I've seen of unity's high end, it just doesn't compare to other high end engines.

aye, unity3d can look as good as unigine i think. maybe its not optimized that far as unigine is but still.
it just that unity3d was first used for small indie games cause of the pricing and the free demo of the engine.
that makes many think that this game engine is not capable of pulling AAA titles.
take a look at Airbuccaneers or Guns Of Icarus for example. they look absolutely amazing and are done with unity3d

n30p1r4t3,
edit: removed distro part as that probably gone derail the discussion
as for unity3d, I think your a bit harsh on the gfx part, shadowrun looks really nice as do several other games on it, from https://aec-apps.com/app/app/unity-3d
I do believe, but I don't know for sure, that unity3d is cheaper and thus used more in all levels (from AA titles to indie) and the lower levels often spend less on gfx because they have a more limited budget and you get the idea that Unity3d can't do fancy gfx

manjaro or cinnarch are probably the best bets.
cinnarch if you want out of box cinnamon
manjaro if you want xfce (because thats the most polished from their side)
chakra if you want kde
and pure Arch with your own tweaks if you are freak like me lol :D

Unigine is not going to be universal due to Licensing fees. I've had the pleasure of playing with the demo, but as it was a demo, I do not have any rights to release my demo game in it. It's pretty powerful, but it requires some studying to use. If they made a free license (as in over so much revenue, they get a percentage or you can purchase a commercial license to avoid royalty fees) then it would more likely take over. For now, we have to wait.

i'm happy on Chakra, which is also Arch-based and semi-rolling. popular packages are kept up to date, but major system changes spend more time in testing before pushed to stable.
i left K/Ubuntu for a few reasons, but mostly it's the stuttering releases. as a gamer, tearing down my install every 6 months just isn't worth it. so Chakra really fits the bill for me, and it's an amazingly smooth implementation of KDE (my preferred DE.)
note that Chakra is more KDE/QT focused. i have no issues installing GTK on it, and i'd rather the devs focus on making KDE and the system run smoothly anyway, but if one wants a more GTK friendly distro then Manjaro may work well for you.
i spent last year on windows, but in the end i returned to Linux because i missed my freedom and, well, indies are where the action is these days. ;)

I agree I've no idea why they would do it this way, very odd.
I just wish they told us how many people these statistics where taken from.

Quoting: MbitThe solution to these figures are that both February and March are compared to January. Thanks someone also explained this on reddit, it does certainly explain why the figures look so off.
Linux Mint 14 Nadia 64 bit wasn't shown in January so it is up +0.13% in February compared to January and up +0.17% in March also compared to January. Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit was at 0.43% in January, so it is up +0.28% to 0.71% in February compared to January and up +0.04% to 0.47% in March compared to January.

Well to be quite frank, I haven't opened it in a while because there isn't much of anything there. I mean, there is only so many times I can play a Pixel game or a Puzzle game. I know Valve are adding it's games but I've played those to death already years ago. Same with the Humble Bundle, it's almost always Puzzle games and Pixel art, eventually you get tired of that.
We just need some AAA titles. Another thing, people have moved from 12.04.1 to the updated 12.04.2 seems they are counting that as a loss, amongst other anomalies.

My honest opinion is that we shouldn't read into it too much since no one really knows how the survey works.
It's a survey after all it's never 100% accurate, It can't be unless they counted as close to 100% of their user base as possible, but it's not, it's a small section of their users they survey.

That would, in fact, make more sense (well, the Mint example would).
0.13 compared to last month's 0.17 would give us a -0.04... Doesn't remove the fact that the deltas or statistics are borked...

Infact they are borked, take this for example:
This Month: Linux Mint 14 Nadia 64 bit 0.13% +0.13%
Last Month: Linux Mint 14 Nadia 64 bit 0.17% +0.17%
How can this month be lower yet be +0.13%, the survey this month just isn't right or last month wasn't right or both.
Another
This Month: Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit 0.47% +0.04%
Last Month: Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit 0.71% +0.28%
Again how can this month have a +0.04% increase yet again actually be lower.
Something just isn't right, unless I am looking at it completely wrong that is...
I mean it's possible that overall they are less against the rest (the rest being all other Linux, Mac and Windows) but still have more if that makes sense?
