Steams March user survey is out, Linux goes down!
By fedso, 30 March 2013 at 10:08 am UTC

it would be interesting to know how users are selected for the survey, googling for that appears that steam survey has been criticized more than once for not being reliable, but it's a survey after all, so I guess we'll have to expect some jumping around. Said that a decrease was expected, on February SoL was on the headlines, but with only 9 indie titles released in March it just disappeared from the radar. However it must have raised the awareness considerably, I'd like to have a survey on how many people tried/installed/kept linux after the SoL release and how many will eventually move to linux after more big titles. From SoL forum there are quite a few people ready to drop windows if their (few) favorite games are ported.

I don't know if I was a part of the reason it went down, but when the survey came up on my end I accidentally closed it. It didn't reappear after that, so I assume it's as if I didn't enter the survey.

Two versions of Ubuntu have a total of -0.48% together. That's one reason. So with the other additions it just can't add up this time.

How could the numbers decrease when there are + changes almost everywhere? Doesn't add up.

QuoteFinal Fantasy games has just hit it's 2.0 release!
was only looking at the final
QuoteI have yet to do a proper play through of this one, looks like it could be pretty fun though, especially great now it's open source!
It's a shame to pull someones article to bits, over something so trivial though.

Quoting: liamdaweSo it would be "it's" since i cannot replace with his or her so...i was right?
Err no, the apostrophe in the case of "it's" indicates a contraction of "it is", whilst "its" denotes ownership (which is where Rusty's his/hers thing comes from).

The rule of thumb that I use is that physically missing letters take precedence over ownership ^_^

Nope, you weren't and aren't...
the now open source RPG game reminiscent of early Final Fantasy games has just hit it's 2.0 release!
-> the RPG game has hit it's 2.0 release!
-> the girl has just hit her boyfriend
-> "his/her for it"
-> "its 2.0 release".

:D
http://www.grammar-monster.com/easily_confused/its_its.htm

Aaaah, look:
"I, the open source game, have hit MY 2.0 release" -> ITS
"I, the open source game, have hit I'M 2.0 release" "I, the open source game, have hit I HAVE 2.0 release" -> IT'S

Which one ? :)

Starsector space combat sim gets a new trailer!
By mongrol, 29 March 2013 at 10:30 pm UTC

Great game, great dev's, very open, listen to fans. They're just doing everything right so far. I real gamers game. Shame about the name change though, Starfarer was cool. Starsector is so generic.

Quoting: HyeronTo those not having played/finished it yet: it IS a pretty nifty game, if a bit lacking in the... literary department.
Some parts are outright infuriating though - not gonna spoil it but you'll probably find out soon enough if you give it a go. If you find yourself stuck, there's a walkthrough on the Nooskewl website that can save your sanity.

PS: Also, ITS, not IT'S. And "open source source".

A Good Rule of Thumb:
If you can replace it with his or her, there's no apostrophe.
or if you can replace It's with it has or it is then the apostrophe is used.

Is the category "Free game" for libre/FOSS games or just for games for which you don't have to pay?
If there is no libre/FOSS game category, there should be! :)
(Also instead of categories, it should probably be tags, so multiple ones can be combined, no?)

Humble Troubles Again, more platform specific bundles
By Cheeseness, 29 March 2013 at 8:03 am UTC

Quoting: berarmaI agree with most opinions about misuse of the brand. Every time a new bundle is out I go check which features have changed. DRM? Cross-platform? Oh, I can't play this time but I can donate to charity.

This sort of thing worries me. If you want to support charities, but are less interested in the bundle, maybe you'd be best off supporting those charities directly. As with all things, the fewer middle men, the better, and if you're not getting what you want from the bundle itself, then it doesn't make much sense to have it in the equation.

When the first THQ bundle launched, I saw a lot of people accusing those who criticised the promotion of hurting the charities. The notion that Humble Bundle is the only way to support Child's Play and the EFF is beyond silly and perhaps even harmful to those charities.

Quoting: Mike FrettI'm gonna throw this out there, why not a GOOD Linux only Bundle to offset all the anger?

This seems to push gamers on different platforms farther apart rather than bringing them together (which arguably, is one of the most important aspects of previous Humble Bundle promotions).

Beyond that, it would:
  • encourage non-Linux gamers to believe that those asking for Linux support would have no right to complain

  • create some level of disparity where platform favouritism on Humble's part would be perceived

  • encourage fewer developers to release cross-platform games in the hopes of being included in a bundle (look at Tiger Style games - they built a cross platform engine in the hopes of getting Waking Mars into a bundle, and now plan to release everything they do on Linux)

It would be awesome if it could truly be same day release. Keep us posted if you can :D

Quoting: SabunQuoteNative apps with smooth performance on iOS, Android, Chrome, PC, Mac, and soon, Linux
From the Moai website. That's kinda risky. Soon for Linux could mean anything. Is there a possible ETA for Linux support? Not dissing, I'm just curious. LOVE2D is also Lua based, so I wonder how different Moai is from LOVE2D. The art definitely looks nice.

The plan is simultaneous release on all platforms, though I'm not aware if their plans to have the beta of Broken Age Windows/Mac only have changed now that Steam is on Linux.

Some of the recent backer-only content included a photo of Broken Age running on all target platforms (since they were all running full screen, I can't say for sure that one was Linux, but it certainly seemed to be what they were saying ^_^ ).

Edit: For anybody hunting for it, it can be found in Greg's Production Update #5 post, though the thread is only visible to people who have backed the project.

Postal, Dungeon Defenders and Dungeon Hearts added to Steam for Linux
By Sabun, 29 March 2013 at 4:26 am UTC

Finally Dungeon Defenders has made it into Steam Linux library. They actually fixed the fullscreen bug and the mouse mouse. I'm glad! They still have not fixed the mana issue though, so the mana just sits there statically... I tried it and made a short recording of it if you'd like to see:

QuoteI still miss grimrock, they totally ignoring both steam forum and their own forum, very disappointing
When Dungeon Defenders first got ported, they pretty much ignored the cries of the Linux gamers as well. It might be possible they're working on it in the background, but are in no rush... They also don't feel obliged to answer. Which is not cool.

they lost my here:
"We do not allow any games with nudity or sexual behavior"

censorship is always bad, but on general terms like "nudity" it's ridiculous.
Duke Nukem 3D could not have been funded on this site.
so indies bypass the restrictions of a publisher to serve the gamer directly, just to be chastised by the funding platform.

yeah, I'm surprised they don't already have specific fields in the description, given the specific nature of the projects.

also, they seem to have a consistent problem with possessive pronouns.

That would not really change my mind as to turn around and accept a Linux only Bundle (for me at least) would be more than a little hypocritical. Plus I do not see the problem with pixel art in of itself. :P

Humble Troubles Again, more platform specific bundles

I'm not as disappointed as I was on the 1st THQ Bundle. This time it's still THQ and after the 1st one was over, the guys at THQ were talking about paying Linux more attention; then they went bankrupt of course.

I'm gonna throw this out there, why not a GOOD Linux only Bundle to offset all the anger?. I say 'good' because I don't think a Pixel art and more puzzle games are doing it. We need more Torchlight and Half-Life kind of Games. I wouldn't mind at all if Runic Games would port Torchlight 2, even if the heads are missing. =p

Not to bothered myself although I do own a Android phone and tablet, so its nice to see games in a bundle that don't have to be multiplatform. Its great for Android as there is a better selection of good quality games to go into a bundle without the worry of trying to find stuff that is cross-platform. The Windows only bundle didn't bother me either despite not using windows at all. I guess nows such a great time to be a linux gamer that this just seems such a non issue with so many other avenues to acquire games.

I have a sent a feature request to the website devs, add in platforms for projects, I contacted one developer to ask what platforms his game will be on, his reply was "PC" *sigh*.

We need to know if it's Windows, Mac and Linux. Saying PC in this day and age is not good enough if you are only on one OS.
