Monster RPG 2 major new version 2.0 is out!
By Hyeron, 25 March 2013 at 12:32 pm UTC

To those not having played/finished it yet: it IS a pretty nifty game, if a bit lacking in the... literary department.
Some parts are outright infuriating though - not gonna spoil it but you'll probably find out soon enough if you give it a go. If you find yourself stuck, there's a walkthrough on the Nooskewl website that can save your sanity.

PS: Also, ITS, not IT'S. And "open source source". ;)

They aren't on the main Monster RPG site yet, until I finish the final releases for other platforms. For now you can get them from: http://trent.gamblin.ca/tmp/2.0-final/. Cheers.

The Sad State About Japanese Devs And Linux
By , 22 March 2013 at 5:53 pm UTC

After writing this, I realized "Keeping source -in-house" might also mean that they don't want any third party to deal with it. regardless of the fact that it's open or closed.  My mistake.

The Sad State About Japanese Devs And Linux

"And by and large they want to keep source code in-house"  That's becoming more and more of a moot reason.  There are plenty of closed-source software in Linux and the still timid but large enough number of games are generally closed.  Carmack is the exception, not the rule.

It picked up quite a few yes votes, but it has a long way to go to get to the Top 100. Steam has a pretty hardcore gaming audience, so I expected that when I submitted it. Still, I look at it as another way to advertise and let people know about my games. And I picked up a few direct sales from it.

Kerbal Space Program released for Linux

I made a quick video demonstrating the building and launch gameplay -- I also tried to do as much in space as I could with the limited time (I couldn't quite get into orbit).

Quoting: CheesenessSo far as I'm aware, there is (or was) an expiry period after which you had to return to online mode to be able to play your game.

Ah, didn't know that -- though I would still rather Steam's implementation that any others around.

While, more out of fluke than anything, I also have almost all games in multiple places -- Ubisoft, EA, Activision and the rest of the big "AAA" producers are not going to listen. I don't think most Windows users want DRM either, but with a lot the big names it will be a case of DRM or bust.

And, as I say, I want to play games on Linux; so I will make that sacrifice. Not to say I'll be thrilled with it, mind.

Yeah, Unity exports, however when we made the video 2 months back we weren't so sure if it was an addon license or not.  We had no way to test.  So I didn't want to promise anything I couldn't deliver since we were running an old build of Unity.  Not an after thought, it runs the same code base as the windows and mac version, but thanks for your interest.  Also there aren't any rubber toy balls either, again, sorry!

Also, do you have to buy a license to export to Linux platform, with unity 3d? besides the first major purchase of the IDE. He was talking about having to buy a license for each platform in the video.

Ever notice how Linux is never mentioned in the videos? It's always added later in a post, like "Oh yeah..whatever that OS is, i guess we will support it"

Steam starts it's own form of Alpha Funding!
By Cheeseness, 21 March 2013 at 8:10 pm UTC

Quoting: edgleyTrue but other than it being tied to an account, I don't seem any other serious issues -- I'm not 100% sure at what point a game is "activated" (whether it's at checkout or download initiation), but as soon as it's downloaded you can go offline and play forever and as Steam requires a restart to go in to "Online mode", you can't completely unknowingly loose access to your games from that.

So far as I'm aware, there is (or was) an expiry period after which you had to return to online mode to be able to play your game. Offline mode also precludes players from being able to play multiplayer games for titles that use Steamworks for multiplayer stuff.

Quoting: HamishPersonally what annoys me more is not users being seduced but developers. I would not have a big beef with Steamworks and the like if developers still put out non-Steam versions for those of us that find the "pitfalls" unacceptable.

I think almost everything I own on Steam has another version available ^_^
