I find news on steam updates worth mentioning. Not everyone runs their steam client daily.

Do News on Steam Updates make any sense ?
Not to sound disruptive but Steam under Linux updates itself quite often....

Personally I don't mind seeing an alternative, nothing bad can come out of it, but I was interested in hearing of new features. Seems like those don't exist?
Also Murmur(Mumble Server) seems to be very destructive to my Ubuntu server, so I will try this out, if I still need VoIP when this releases.

Hey this looks pretty sweet - I'm assuming it's not a game though, but more of a visual novel? Is it any good?

Steam's hardware survey now shows many distro's
By Cheeseness, 18 March 2013 at 8:20 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestWow, looking pretty good so far. I'd imaging that these numbers will keep increasing slowly month by month, and it'll be really interesting to see where they go. If I'm hopeful, I'd imagine they will grow very slowly each month, with a slight bump whenever a high profile game is released on Linux.

Hey Cheese, what do you think about a Steam user share visualization for Linux? It might be interesting to watch from here on out.
Actually, when they first included Linux stats, I started manually pulling the data in the hopes that I'd be able to do something with it later. I haven't been very diligent with that, though it's still on my todo list :)

If you find your Steam install, and then open steam.sh, you can find the methods that Steam uses to detect distros starting at around line 124.

If my math is correct, all of the Ubuntus together (not counting Mints or any other derivs) come to 1.82%, which is 72.8% of the Linux users.  While I DEFINITELY agree that Valve should be trying to be as cross-distro as possible, these numbers are the reason why they focus on Ubuntu so much (unless you believe people are using Ubuntu with Steam b/c it has the best support).

Jack Keane adventure game shows up on Desura
By , 18 March 2013 at 7:42 am UTC

I bought a  copy from tuxgames a few years ago, and concur that Jack Keane is a fun game with some zany humor even in the puzzles.  When I saw Jack Keane 2 coming out last year, I registered at a Deck10 forum in order to request a Linux port for the sequel -- one of the forum admins didn't even realize that there had been a port of the first one!

Legends of Aethereus an MMORPG in closed beta that's coming to Linux
By , 18 March 2013 at 7:30 am UTC

True, the beta download hasn't been updated for a while, but we shouldn't be surprised to see an update soon. ThreeGates has definitely been working on Linux issues; they have recently been in contact with me about issues from using an old radeon that can only run legacy fglrx drivers. I am impressed they are interested in trying to make it run decently on hardware like this as the low end.

Kickstarter-RPG by Richard Garriott: Shroud of the Avatar
By , 18 March 2013 at 6:55 am UTC

Those who are looking for a successor to single-player ultima should be pretty happy with Shroud of the Avatar, since the DRM-free always-offline single-player mode is going to be in the same style. The single-player storyline is definitely being taken seriously, as demonstrated by the recent update about getting a professional fantasy author onboard to help RG flesh it out.

On the other hand, people pining for early days of UO may not get their wishes, because it sounds like there will be a lot more constraints on pvp then in early UO. Those of us who want a non-MMO multiplayer RPG (like NWN multiplayer) are still a bit confused about how the coop feature is going to work out.

What distro is called Linux? Or is this referring to older Linux distributions in general based on Kernel version? I am curious why they'd include stats for distributions that are practically at 0.00%...

I wonder if there's a future where we'll see 20-40% of the desktop market owned by Linux distributions, in a time where desktops are still important that is.

If you look at Steam.sh, you can see the methods with which Steam grabs this information. When results were published at the beginning of the month, some of us within the SteamLUG community were able to identify that Arch users without lsb-release installed were showing up as "Linux 64 bit" (other distros may show up differently).

It's also pretty easy to put your own text in places where Steam will pick it up. It'll be interested to see if/how Valve go about preventing people from submitting silly distro names.

It happens at the start of the month (though it's possible that users selected to participate who don't log in until later in the month may not see the prompt until then). Users are selected at random to participate. The sample size is unknown, and there have previously been bugs with the sampling process.

I've attempted to keep track of details in the Steam forums.

When Valve will port all their games the number will increase significantly. Also the support from AMD and NVIDIA must be more Linux oriented.

It's still not fully ported -- http://homeworldsdl.org/ -- still has missing features.

In any case, I don't find this campaign very convincing. Who are teampixel and what have they ever done? Homeworld is a true masterpiece, and that franchise shouldn't be handed over to amateurs. Let them start a new franchise...

Those are the dependencies for the latest stable version from git I believe.

To be honest, I don't think using it with ALSA will help as ALSA's software mixer is terrible. ffmpeg can theoretically use hw:0,0 while it's playing through speakers but I just can't seem to get it to work on my hardware.

It may be a limitation with the on board audio I'm using and I've wanted a dedicated sound card for some time (Asus Xonar or similar), so maybe I'll try that first :)

Main thing for me is, I like to use the terminal where possible.

Fraps on Linux would be great, I would really like something that locked the FPS of the game to the same as your recording (only one I can think of that does that is glc [but that's a PITA to deal with]). I often have to manually sync my videos sound to the video in editing.
