Jack Keane adventure game shows up on Desura
By Sabun, 11 March 2013 at 9:21 pm UTC

This is the first time I've heard of this game, but the trailer makes it look like good fun. I always enjoy games that put some form of humor into them :)

Is this a game actually made for Linux first? Or are my senses just messing with my mind?

This is a pain installing that adobe air in 64bit. get-libs no longer works for me. That old adobeair package for linux is just gonna get even harder and harder to install as the years go by.

Let us know when you make a game Aironeous so we can all not support it...do you always post all your prejudices on the internet every time you get the whim? Kind of rude don't you think?

Look in the mirror. You are doing exactly what he is doing by claiming you won't support him because of his ideals. Ironic!

Shadowrun Returns First Look! 2D turn based RPG

Aha, yeah glad I backed for the closed BETA! We need more RPG's and strategy games, less FPS'.

Also, while I don't mind so much if the editor is not on Linux initially, I would really love them to port that at some point.

I agree 100%, I would never think of "convincing" someone who is happy with Windows unless they ask I probably won't really tell them.

Back OT: So excited for this game :D

Couldn't agree more with s_d -- convincing people who are happy with Windows usually doesn't work (at least for me).

I've converted a few people who've been fed up with Windows, though they tend not to be big gamers (still a lack of choice *right* now).

I'm not Liam, but I'll answer your question anyway.  It's been my experience that recommending Linux to happy Windows (and Mac OS X) users is a bad strategy.  I have a far better impact in suggesting, and committing my personal support, for unhappy Windows or Mac users.

For example, if a friend ends up in a bad way with a Windows 8 pre-installed computer, one in which the vendor won't supply up-to-date Windows 7 drivers, that is the time to say "Hey, I'll do whatever it takes for you.  We'll get it figured out with Linux!".  This strategy has helped me get dozens of people going over the years, and is the way that causes the least amount of friction.  Viruses, rootkits, losing data, crashing drivers... all of these are great opportunities to help someone try something new.  Be on call for them, and show them how awesome and supportive our community is (by being that person in the community, first and foremost).

Otherwise, you end up with someone who feels kind of badgered into trying it out, in a half-assed way, and has yet another story of "... oh, I tried that Linux once and it didn't work for me, and I like [whatever] better, and knew it was a bad decision to even try it and, blah blah blah, blah..."

We do not need more versions of that story in the community.  :)

Civitas - 22 hours and $12,000 (from 3:22 PM)

That's right! I am not embellishing or lying about this. When I last checked the numbers yesterday, about 5:00 PM PST, the Kickstarter was at $58,880 and now it is at $71,340!! To be exact that's $12,460 in less than a day for a game that has yet to show nothing more than a few screenies and some promises. What is the key to this rapid success: community focused growth. The game will be touted to have: tools that can help the player create new buildings; a whole new focus/programming developed around realistic planning and city growth; transit systems that will work from day one; a SINGLEPLAYER (SimCity FAIL!!) and multiplayer, both having the same features; multiplayer mode is a battle for citizens so watch out for the tax wars; the most important feature of all: terraforming. Want to know the upside to all this? If you invest now and G.A.M. gets the funding you get the game you pay for ($15 for the game or $25 or more for the game plus BETA access, along with other goodies as the donations go up). If G.A.M. falls short you get your money back. Worried about being scammed? I have tried the Kickstarter method and one becomes legally bound, through Kickstarter, to create the product/project or return the money; there is no room for scamming innocent people. They have my $25!!

3 new bundles with Linux titles in them

Quoting: muntdefems
Quoting: hardpenguinWell, the thing is, Monster Minis Extreme Off-Road only announced its planned (and worked on) Linux support, but no measurable effects so far...
You're right, my apologies. I didn't check it explicitly, I just trusted the bundle's page were this game is announced as supporting Linux. If there's no Linux support as of yet, I assume it must be right around the corner, since last January they announced they were close enough to a finished Linux version (source: Steam Greenlight page).

Anyway, one of the developers said on IndieGameStand's forums that this game was scheduled for being featured there pretty soon. I guess we can wait and see if there's a Linux version by then.
It hasn't been featured on IndieGameStand yet, but it's already available for Linux on Desura. ^_^

Hi Liam,

Are you a Linux user who discovers Gaming or the opposite (a Gamer who picks up on Linux). Your experience may help me to convince a few Windows Gamers into using Linux. Unfortunately, I know Linux but I don't play games. Can you please tell me for some convincing arguments? Thanks.

Torment: Tides of Numenera announced on Kickstarter
By s_d, 10 March 2013 at 9:21 pm UTC

Quoting: Bumadarreason I use wine is because I am not sure that all the good mods work via gemrb, some are not needed as gemrb is better then the old infinity engine, but several add a lot of good stuff to the game, new quests, expanding quests, fixing them etc. etc.

Bumadar, that's totally true.  That's why I mentioned GemRB, but didn't claim that people should use it.  Just that it's there!  I wanted to make the point that even spending a few dollars on GOG to buy Planescape: Torment doesn't mean an experience subject to the complication of Wine.  Plus... more players using GemRB means a bigger community to port over good mods and make them work.  I might be willing to put some time into that, later this summer... might you, someday?  :)

Quoting: Mike FrettI don't know if it's a Scam. But I do that this guy tried to Kick-start this last year, BEFORE the Simcity debacle but didn't get enough money. And you can find various posts from way back of him talking about building this and trying to get help, I think he had posted on the Ubuntu forums looking for Devs. So I doubt it's a Scam.
Then why did he create a new account for this one? It says it's the first created which makes it more odd.

this is there 2nd try with this game, 1st run they got 6.5k of the 150k they needed.  This time its going a bit better by the looks of it but will be a close call to reach the 50k mark, don't see 70k happening unless they got some good PR out

Agree, this one looks a lot like someone trying to profit from the SimCity debacle. Don't invest there until they can prove it's legit.

The Cave Is Finally Playable on Steam for Linux
By Cheeseness, 9 March 2013 at 8:43 pm UTC

For anybody who's interest, I transcribed the interview I did with Ron Gilbert. We didn't talk about Linux directly much, but he did mention that it was probably too early to get a feel for how many people are playing The Cave under Linux.

They use Unity, and when u are a little bit familiar with Unity, u can build a "game" like the one in the video in 1-2 hours.. be carefull, i would not support it atm

Civitas - Plan, develop and manage the city of your dreams!
By Sabun, 9 March 2013 at 6:49 pm UTC

Hmm, they claim to be veterans in AAA titles but have been recently laid off. If they are veterans, why don't they have at least a video showing members of the team/studio, and possibly game art and shorts of development?

As much as it looks so very cool, the no-video thing turned me off immediately before even having read Anon's comment above. They have made a Facebook account, but for the sum of money they're asking it's just not enough information. There's one video on Terraforming, but it feels strangely unprofessional. If it's only a one man team though, I am impressed with what he's accomplished in that video so far.

Thanks liamdawe for sharing this though, I'll be watching it in the coming days. Might pledge if it starts to look realistic and trustworthy.

Btw., this one is a scam. Unknown company, no website (just a countdown), only one name behind it and an unrealistic budget. See here for more info: http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/19wbpt/is_civitas_a_scam_to_cash_in_on_simcitys_angry/
