Jonathan Blow on Linux users buying games and The Witness
By berarma, 27 February 2013 at 10:19 pm UTC

Certainly, the HIB is being really successful at selling games to GNU/Linux users, but I think that's not only because of the price, it's because they've taken our platform pretty seriously unlike some other developers. When will GNU/Linux users buy more games? If you ask me, when more quality games reach our platform and more developers take us seriously.

Like it or not, some developers/publishers see their users as the enemy, and when it comes to GNU/Linux users, we're the worst ones.

The game was out on windows welllllll before linux.  The people that WANTED to play the game would have already bought the game before being moved to linux.

and if everyone could get it on the humble indie bundle for cheap ofcause they would get it there.

*sigh*

I for one has bought heaps of linux games on steam since it came out.  *fist bump*

Good to see people do share my views, Braid is a good game but nothing even close to how "amazing" people seem to say it is.

I'm getting kind of bashed on reddit for my views on this, see this here: http://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/19beiw/jonathan_blow_braid_on_the_possibility_of_a_linux/c8mia5q

I get what the guy is trying to say (even if he is blowing it out of proportion with his murder analogy) but he seems to be blindly sticking up for the developer.

Quoting: Hamish[...] it is interesting to see people like this being associated to something with the name of "humble" when they gave the independent games movement much of it's "pretentious" veneer. Although, I must admit I may not actually be being that objective since I considered Braid to be one of the most over-hyped titles of the last decade.

Totally agree with this. A lot of indie developers are awesome and I can't big them up enough, but people like JB, TR -- and to a lesser extent Phil Fish -- really put a stain on the ideology of being an "indie" developer.

I seem to recall Phil Fish saying "If my game doesn't sell, I will kill myself." (Don't quote me on that, but it was something along those lines).

Well, there is some novelty in this, but it is still entering an already well crowded field here.

Not to be too harsh, but when there is a pun I will go for it: Jonathon Blow is actually a bit of a blow hard. Not as bad as Team Meat (or should I simply say Tommy Refenes), but it is interesting to see people like this being associated to something with the name of "humble" when they gave the independent games movement much of it's "pretentious" veneer. Although, I must admit I may not actually be being that objective since I considered Braid to be one of the most over-hyped titles of the last decade.

Quoting: AnonymousJust paid it, and the answer is no, at least no link to it on the download page of the humble bundle. But well, I prefere pay it on the humble page than on steam because of the DRM free anyway
Yeah, I ended up just buying it again.

It's nice when developers offer everything together in one place, but at least there are options for whichever people prefer.

I'm curious to know whether the Humble Store version (if there's anybody who's picked it up) comes with a Steam key.

Edit: I ended up buying it again via the official site (I figure Terry deserves a couple of extra dollars). No Steam key there, but at least I have DRM copies now :D

I bought this on Steam to show my support. It's an amazingly fun, but difficult, game.

Steam roundup, new titles, new greenlights, new stuff!

Quoting: MikeThanks for this information. I already have CS and BIT.TRIP 2 on Steam, but I bought Receiver through the Humble Store. Any idea if they'll give out a steam key for those who purchased it through there when it comes out? Also, Distance and Anodyne looks like excellent games!
They will give you a steam key it says so on the Humble page

"Your order also comes with a complimentary copy of Receiver. Be sure to vote on it on Steam Greenlight here. As soon as it becomes available on Steam, all customers will receive a complimentary Steam key as well. (Overgrowth is already approved for Steam and will be added in the future)."

In any case, so many games to choose from now on Linux. Still need to get used to that after about 10 years of booting into Windows to play.

Thanks! I would certainly provide Steam keys for previous customers who wanted them, just like I did with Desura.

Hey man!

I did buy your games on your website a little while ago and I was wondering if any Steam keys would be provided to those of us that purchased the game directly from your website, or if these will only be available to new buyers.

Now a bit off-topic: My fiance and I played the game together and she pointed out that the game reminded her of "The Blues Brothers" game (which is a terrific game by the way, in case you haven't played it) and it brought back some memories. You get an extra bonus point for that!

Thanks.

Quoting: tombubenI should remind you that the new Runner 2 game is actually not in the Bit-Trip series and has a completely different visual style.
I prefer to call it "BIT.TRIP Runner 2" than it's real name "BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien" well that's its full title on Steam anyway.

3 Linux games on the Be Mine Anniversary bundle
By muntdefems, 26 February 2013 at 9:27 pm UTC

Less than two days till this bundle ends, and for the sake of completeness I must announce the last unlocked game: The Adventures of Shaggy, a Windows-only platformer. I haven't contacted the developers, but since the game is built on XNA there seem to be little chance it gets ported to Linux (at least anytime soon).

Sweet - my sneaky purchase of Wargame: European Escalation I bought in the 75%-off sale can now be installed! Now I just need Portal and Portal 2 to be released on Linux to complete my 'early' purchases.

Advice to game developers:
don't state your perceived target audience publicly, those on target will feel pigeonholed, the others will feel excluded.

And as MaximB says, this one was especially ridiculous.

Kickstarter for Galaxy Chomp, a roguelike-like space adventure
By , 26 February 2013 at 12:37 am UTC

Here is a link to an older Kickstarter video I made before deciding on the one currently on the project page. It has some gameplay footage. Note that the graphics are all still just placeholders, and everything is totally alpha. :-)

That is actually why I didn't have more gameplay stuff showing, I was afraid that seeing alpha quality work would turn too many people away. I have since been told by a number of people that I should forget that and show the game regardless of how rough it is. I am going to make an update with some gameplay footage and me answering some of the biggest questions I have gotten so far tonight. I'm also working on getting a prototype together that I will release on the Kickstarter for everyone to play around with.

Here are a few early screenshots.

It is really not much like FTL at all (sorry if that had you excited!) It is a space-based roguelike, but I think that is about where the similarities end. You control your ship directly, and one of the major gameplay mechanics is actually flying your ship well. There is no "game map" or whatever, you are just flying your ship in the game world directly, with no borders or boundaries or set paths.
